1/25 MPC Carl Casper's Cosmic Charger Fuel Dragster
gtx6970 replied to dragnut's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
WOW, Very nice. I was in my local HL yesterday to pick up some paint. And they had this kit on the mark down isles. And for 17.99 I couldn't leave it there. Ive always thought this was a beautiful looking car then and now. Ive never been much of a FED model builder but this one will be in my case for sure . And I have it on the bench right now and would really appreciate any build tips anyone can provide . Im planning to build it as the scooped version with the front wheel fairings . I think it looks cleaner . Haven't decided yet if I'll actually put the engine in it or not. Have to pick up some blue in the next day or so . The orange/red I am going to use is a Mopar touchup color called Candy Tangerine I bought for a different build but decided to go with a different color on it -
Found this one at Hobby Lobby on the discount table. Anyone have any build suggestions or tips to make it look right. Especially paint colors or suggestions Tia

First time using BMF
gtx6970 replied to smhardesty's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Same here, I ordered the pens mainly for dash bezels , steering wheel horn rings. And the occasional under hood touch on engine parts / chrome valve covers as an example. Seriously doubt I'll ever use them on any body exterior trim I would be real curious the longevity of these pens finish over time . How well they retain there brilliance -
A couple new decal sheets for later on someday builds . Now I might actually drag one of the new 65 Satellites to the bench here soon

Jesse, The Koach does have the Cobra valve covers ( dont remember if the Dragula did or not , and if it does you cant see them anyway once the body is on ) But the engines are so far under scale in both its unreal. And if one decided to build a drive train in a more correct scale I don't think the body would fit down over them . Thats one of the reasons I don't think either car would make very good parts kits. Ive been on a simple kit build run lately. The Koach isnt done yet as I'm going to do the wind shield frame with the chrome pen when my order arrives . But I like this picture . My daughter did a snap kit build of the Polar Lights 66 Batmobile and its in the other side if this case . Once completed, I'll take a better group photo of them all I present ( and in my best Fred Gwynne voice ) I present the cars of my yuth.

I thought I read thats where the coil mounts on the S+M kit ( I dont have one to verify said theory )

I wonder if one could make a mold with aluminum foil off an existing lense. Sit in baked clay as an example. Lay a predetermined slice of cut off clear sprue in said mold . then put it in an oven to basically melt and form itself to the foil. I guess it would only work if you could remove the foil once cooled just thinking out loud

Snake, Other than tires and wheels.... I dont think it would be a very good parts kit. The engine and trans are grossly undersized ,,The engine / trans itself is only 5 pieces. There's no suspension of any kind. Its a pretty neat kit to have and will be glad to have one built in my case. Even though its a simple kit, getting stuff to fit is a challenge, trust me . Especially getting the rear fenders and very rear seat arrangement will be a trial on your patience . If I ever build another one ( not likely ) I'll drop the instructions in the trash and build it in my own order / sequence . My best advise to anyone, fit the rear fenders and rear seat brackets to the body before you paint anything. Im waiting on my order for the chrome pens to do the windshield frame , a few touch ups here and there then some small parts attachments before I call it done.

Thanks fellas, Its a pretty simple kit ( extremly simple actually ) Got the body painted yesterday. Its duplicolor basic black with Upol urethane clear. ( I dont care for the duplicolor rattle can clear ) Ended up re-taping it and resprayed the rear doors in a light gold , as I didnt care for the yellow that the instructions calls for. Top of the body and the folded rear cowl is sprayed in duplicolor flat black lacquer . And the Interior is just Testors flat red with embossing powder for carpeting. As of this morning ,,,,the Body, chassis and interior are now glued as one unit

Very nice. The color reminds me on Wincheser Grey. ( not avail on a Cuda will 71 though ) I just picked up some paint last weekend to finally break down and build one of these myself. I need to build a replica of a good friends actual car ( and yes its a real one )

HVLP Mini Spray Gun
gtx6970 replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ive used one similar to it for painting 1/1 parts . Never tried to use one on a model but I can see where the spray pattern itself might be beneficial over an airbrush or rattle can . I have a couple of the different harbor freight guns. And for my uses they work good. If you were to plan to make a living with one. IMO,,,,Look at other options That said a couple friends of mine use a full size gun on models with EXCELLENT results. BUT they paint 1/1 cars for a living and have guns costing FAR more than $20. I know one of his guns was over $1000 -
Sweet, Love the colors . Where did you get the bench front seat ? is it a rear cut from another tub and modified ? Ive got one of these and not real sure I like the idea of buckets seats the kit comes with

How can I get this exact finish on my model wheels?
gtx6970 replied to Monty's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I bought the 1 and 2 mm pens off amazon yesterday. 9.95 for one , and 10.95 for the other -
I bit the bullet this week and ordered the 1mm and 2 mm off Amazon . I'm thinking they would be great for instrument panels, interior door handles and steering wheel horn rings.

How can I get this exact finish on my model wheels?
gtx6970 replied to Monty's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If it were me. I would spray the rims with metalizers buffing aluminum finish,,, then hand paint the spokes in testors silver. DO NOT clear them . The rear wheels on this is just plain metalizers magnesium finish , the fronts are I think aluminum ( car has been done a couple years so I don't remember 100% ) - both then lightly buffed with a Q tip. No clear The interior tins were sprayed in grey primer and sprayed with duplicolor chrome to get a polished aluminum finish, again no clear -
Spent a few days cleaning up flash ( and there was lots of it ) Got the body in primer last nite. Then taped it up to get the yellow for the rear doors painted this morning. . Interior is just testors flat red ( lighting makes it look shinier than it is ) Im also doing the bare metal foil trick on the fender beading pre-paint. Once its all painted, Ill take some lacquer thinner and clean it off prior to clear coats This was one of my favorite shows as a youngster . And Ive had this blueprinter version of the Koach and Dragula for years ,,,waiting patiently. And there day has finally come.

Ive done the saran wrap thing on a 1/1 scale motorcycle gas tank many many many years ago. Your only limitation is your imagination with the pattern you draw in with your fingers. And Ive never thought about trying it on a model . Might have to think about that one.

I got nuttin . but holy smokes. And I thought the scratch built Weber alone was something, now you making it actually work with a functioning cable and linkages. . you sir are modeling at a different level than 99.999 % of masses. -
Thanks all. My goal from the beginning was replicate the one I did as a kid with only minor upgrades .( BMF in place of silver paint on the trim . ) Im going to order one of the chrome pens to finish off the vent wing frames. I had issues getting the foil to look right on them so I gave up. And Ive decided the tank behind the grill stays in the parts pile. I like this one exactly as is. Ive touched up the drivers side decals along the rocker panel with some semi gloss black. And for the most part its in the case probably never to come out again. Now I need to decide on whats next from the pile ,,,I'm thinking Munsters Koach Thanks again

gtx6970 replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in WIP: Model Cars
The more I look at this the more I like it. And you can thank me for the color choices by sending it to me,,,once its done of course. You know I dont have a 63 Might I ask your methods to polish these things? I used Duplicolor black on this and I didnt get mine as slick as yours appears to be
