Hey Eric im sorry I didn't get to meet you at the Sharon show but I love that gremlin also. I got some of the styrene rod and tried bending it yesterday and that stuff is amazing I bent it 360 degrees around a 1/8 pin and even had to squeeze it with pliers to close but it held up and didn't even distort man you are onto something buddy!

Thank you guys!!  I haven't been around for awhile, but I have been making progress on this thing.

Oh for sure!  i love that stuff, it was a lucky find for sure!

Here is a quick rundown of the last few weeks of progress:

Started working on the plug wires, I was able to put a tiny small o-ring over each boot to simulate the hemi style boots.

Next up was the transparent blue carb/blower scoop, i cut some wooden bucks and dropped them into the vacformer with some evergreen trans blue.

and it was an epic fail.... the heat made the plastic lose color, and extremely brittle.

So I tried some clear lexan, and success... but the texture of the MDF I used came through pretty bad.  Going to get some acrylic and try again.

Proof of concept... just needs more development.

Next up was the chassis... I wanted a nice bright blue, but with some pearl in it.. after searching a few stores for colors, I gave up and bought 9.00 worth of 1.00 nail polish from the dollar general and went all mad scientist with it. ( the spoon is the darker color metalflake I decided on for the panels)

Mix it up in a jar and we are good to go:

Chassis painted:

While that was drying I sprayed the matte white on the interior pieces:

Then came time for insanity... panel painting the chassis... I laid out the pattern with 3/16 hole punched vinyl and 1/8" masking tape. Then I laid BMF over the entire panel and cut and removed the center portion of BMF, tape and vinyl dots. ( I didnt get a great photo of this, but you can see the process a bit at the top of this photo)

Painted with Testors Ice Blue, then fogged the edges with Tamiya Clear Blue

Removal of masking.

and done.

Eric is the texture from the air pulling through the MDF and distorting the MDF?  Maybe paint the MDF on all sides?

That panel paint work is nice.

Thank you!  I'm pretty sure that is the issue, the best looking one turned out to be about 1/4" high, and I have some 1/4" acrylic scraps laying around.

Just going to cut some 3/8" strips and give it a try.. im lazy and that is easier than priming and painting..:D

I remember seeing one of your builds a few months back, I only checked the build out cos you have a super cool Impala as your avatar !  Must say your becoming one of my favourite builders on here Eric, loving all the 3D printing, cutters and vacuum forming, but you also build some Wild machinery !!  Looking forward to more on this one.....

Thank you all for the kind words and words of encouragement!

Martin, that means a lot!   thank you!

I have a conundrum, I did something new/different/insane and I'm not sure how I feel about it....or if i should continue.

I read a couple articles on gold leafing, and decided to give it a go...  Directly to a body it didn't work very well for me, I just had a hard time getting a nice crisp edge.

So then I had an idea.... what if I leafed a sheet of BMF?    Well that actually worked..   so then i cut thin strips and use them to outline panels, or whatever..  My issue is to keep the strips nice and straight, the strips have to be wider than I would like.

Here is the sheet of gold bmf with the variegated gold leaf applied:

here are the examples of a couple panels outlined. My first thought was too lowrider-y...but its growing on me for this kinda car.   Any thoughts?

Eric,

This is really great work and it is inspiring me to get back into building. I had to go back and read my SAE article from 8/2001 as I couldn't recall how I did the gold leaf lettering on my Wheeler Dealer replica. My first attempts were with BMF (I still have the sheets of foil with my unsuccessful attempts!), but ultimately, I just laser printed outlines onto decal stock, hand painted the silver base and added the yellow and orange tints using tamiya transparent acrylics with a small brush. Thanks for giving me a reason to dust off this 20 year old model and do some needed repairs !!!

Fantastic work so far.

Since you asked, I would skip the foil trim on the chassis. Seems like it takes away more than it adds, if that makes sense.
