I love model building, but lately I’m not having fun doing the detail work on engines, undercarriages, interiors etc etc.  I find myself going to my 1/32 kits as they typically don’t have engines or complex undercarriage parts and I can really concentate on paint, foiling and making the car look great. The details on the outside. I have to be honest, I barely look under the hood or study the interior after a build. Most of my satisfaction comes at looking at the build from a far.

I can relate for sure. I get burned-out on detail quickly, so typically I will do a full detail build, then two curbsides.....and I don't really care if its kit with a ton of great parts, rare, or whatever, I will glue the doors, and hoods down, especially if I've already fully detailed that engine before on another kit. For example; I already have a Countach V12 that is fully detailed......I don't need to do it again on my other Countach….curbside. I already have a fully detailed 426 Hemi in my GTX...….so my 70 Hemi 'cuda is getting its hood glued down  with nothing but the block under it.  You've seen one Hemi...….you've seen them all. Some will cry about this statement, but oh well, better get some tissues.

I can't do the wiring and extra detail under hood because of dexterity from stroke and above all,patience..My biggest downfall now is I don't have the mojo going..I paint and do paint detail but just last three months have no mojo..Guess it will come back when the colder weather settles in..

I ike to build with paint details and maybe some scratch building as the mood strikes, but most of all I build for the fun of it! I'm not really that worried that my engine isnt wired or I might be missing some underhood details. I try to get a clean build with nice paint and nice chrome work. Its all about the fun!

Detail level and build enjoyment are not inversely proportional.  I think most would consider me a detail extremists.  That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy my builds, I do so very much.  Unless you are building for competition, there are no rules.  It’s your model, build it in the manner that you enjoy. It’s a hobby after all.  If you don’t enjoy it then what’s the point?

My enjoyment comes from the look of the finished model on the shelf--bodywork, paint & trim, finish, "sit," wheels/tires and attitude. I'm fine with curbside and often don't even put the engines in "full detail" kits. I'll sometimes spend some time on the interior, but on my "glue bomb rescue" deals, I usually just squirt the gut with semigloss black and call it done.

I'll do a full build with an engine and correctly painted underside once in a while, but that's no longer my "standard" build. Gotta keep moving!B)

Nor are they proportional or even directly related. Like many have said, build how you want so that you enjoy it. My latest build is a full detail kit (Revell 92 T-Bird) with no suspension or engine, the hood glued shut, and the chassis cut half away with a Dremel. And you know what? I'm extremely happy with it. It's just what I had in mind, and looks the way I want.

I understand where you are coming from. As I've gotten older and busier (not sure how that worked out) and my building time is at an all time premium, I've realized that if I want to complete more than one build a year, I have to do less complicated builds. Less customization, less fabrication, less detailing. So I have been planning, buying and building accordingly. For every complicated build, I do two simple ones.

Yup.  Been there.   Right now, I just dread cranking up to paint bodies.  Airbrushing or even can paints.  It's really the airbrush part because I try to do the interior base color with airbrush.   Just not what I want to do right now.  Lost my inspiration last winter when it turned cold.   It hasn't returned yet and it can get quite warm in my building where I work.   I have detailed some hot wheels and fixed a couple of cars that were losing parts, but that's about it right now.   Nothing new coming out that I want to spend money on.  The Bronco is nice, but waiting to see what all versions come out.  And even then, it doesn't fit in what I've been building collecting lately.

Have been here in the past.  It will likely pass or I'll sell it off as I am currently trying to sell a lot of diescasts and builtups.  To buy more different cars.   Replacing all 1/18s with smaller scale versions, whether they be 1/64 up to 1/24.  And he diecast folks are doing or have done things the plastics haven't done.  57 Buick?  Olds?  Pontiac?  Chrysler?  TUCKER?  I don't need any more plastic kits of  camaros, mustangs, corvettes, 32 Fords.  And even Firebirds - I have at least 15 different Firebirds and I'm not even that big a fan - they just seem to accrue.

So yeah, I'm feeling a slump too.   In particular and in general.

I do still pass through here everyday though to see what's happening and loook for more inspiration and to admire the builds. Someday, something will click and I'll be back at it.

All the time. One of the reasons I enjoy the old annuals. A lot of them  don't have an opening hood so there's no engine to worry about anyway

The older I've got the less important super detail builds have become. I build for me

Learn to polish plastic, Randy, and you can build year-round, no matter how cold or hot/humid it is. Great slump-buster! B)

Same here. Trying to get an AMT ‘40 Ford going now. Nice and simple, looks good when finished.

I love building and detailing but hate painting. Lots of projects have come to a stop because it was time to paint everything! LOL

I went through a stage in building where I was detailing to some extent but it soon became more like a job than a hobby.

I will do the best I can just painting detail under hood, interior and chassis and foil trim but that is the extent of it for me.

I don't do contests my builds go into a case and are there to enjoy looking at.

It is my escape from the real world for a few hours a day!

That's always my dilemma: detail vs. curbside.  My least favorite part of a build is painting, and it's the most important part.

But models usually become a curbside once they hit the shelf.

But in the end, do what you like, it's your project. Enjoy our hobby.
