They said Rustoleum is a better product.  I asked if the Duplicolor was not selling and he said it was selling good but Rustoleum is superior in several ways to Duplicolor?

I work in the auto parts field, have for more years than I want to admit. Decisions like these are usually monetary based. Advance could be switching brands because :

A. They are getting financial incentives from Rustoleum to change.

B. They are trying to be different in their product offering from the other retailers (NAPA, O'Reilly's, Auto Zone)

C. They are trying to be similar in their product offering like the other retailers

D. They have a new product manager who came from the competitor and he made a case for the change.

E. Tommy Callahan Jr. is the Rustoleum rep now.

F. None of the above.

I have run into this many times and the above reasons are usually among the correct answer.Change for the sake of change occurs all the time. Could be Rustoleum has some new products that Advance wants, could be the fancy dinners they had at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.

As "mikemodeler" stated, it's most likely the same reason that fast food joints routinely flip flop back and forth between Coke & Pepsi.

One offers a better deal over the other.

I can't think of another real reason why you would dump a line that sells well for an uncertainty.

Does Rustoleum even make automotive touch up paint?

I don't think so. Besides,  other than primers and basic color palette, they don't have a very large variety to offer.

  • Aren't both brands (along with several brands of hobby paints) all under the RPM Corp. umbrella?  They are probably all made in the same paint factory.

EDIT: I take it back.  Rustoleum is an RPM brand while Duplicolor is part of the Sherwin-Williams group. So they are competitors.

I've used Rustoleum, but never on a model. I have used Duplicolor on models for years, with good results.

I use Rustoleum and Krylon on models as well as Testors and Tamiya. The guy that review and builds kis also uses Rustoleum on his models..

I have tried Rustoleum, it crazes the plastic. Duplicolor does not. Good to know O'Reillys stocks it. I am speaking of the primer. I use Rustoleum colors with no problem.

NAPA carries Duplicolor and I believe Rustoleum, for the simple reason that there are two different markets to approach using both brands. I wouldn't be surprised to see Advance Auto Parts ADDING Rustoleum and not just replacing Duplicolor.

My store has always had Rustoleum along with Duplicolor.  So does the O'Rielys I go to... But Advanced was out of Duplicolor primer and had no place for it.  I asked about it and the guy said they are getting rid of Duplicolor completely because Rustoleum was a better product.  Said it went on better, had better coverage and lasted longer.

Im okay with it as long as Rustoleum offers a better product. Duplicolor has a great primer but I'm not the biggest fan of their paints. The only ones worth using are the pearl paints to look in scale and then they have a tendency to show ghost lines, fog, and crinkle.

The best results ive had with Duplicolor paints was when I used a testors or tamiya lacquer as a base and then overcoat with Duplicolor.

Nothing to really worry about. O'Reileys, Autozone and Pep Boys sell the full line of Duplicolor paints and primers.

I have been using Duplicolor for probably over 25 years now. Its nearly impossible to get a run with that stuff, and rubs out nice. But I`ve also used some Rustoleum with good results. It dries rather quickly and rubs out nice from what I have seen.

It will be interesting to compare the durability. I have cars in my case painted over 20 years ago with Duplicolor that still have a glass smooth deep finish.

Here are a couple builds with Rustoleum finishes. The Wheaties car is the engine enamel orange. The Lowes car is Valspar (some shade of blue) and Rustoleum Painters Touch Marigold with Rustoleum Painters Touch Clear over the whole thing.

Wow.. those look great David!  That super glossy clear is Rustoleum Painters Touch Clear?  Any tips or secrets or does it come out looking that good?  I've never had gloss like that from Duplicolor clears.

Where do you buy your Rustoleum paints?
