Ace-Garageguy Posted November 13, 2018 Posted November 13, 2018 This year, one SEMA exhibitor obviously asked the question "why pay a bunch of stuck-up, finicky, artiste prima donnas well into six figures to get some outrageously beautiful custom car built to draw attention to your product line, when for far far less money (and in the best everyone-gets-a-trophy tradition) you can buy a burnt-out hulk of what USED to be a $200k vehicle, slam a set of wheels on it, and garner just as much notoriety? If the idea takes off, and me-too me-too marketers all begin a-scurrying to copy it, we should see a SEMA show next year exhibiting a lot of the cars that burned in the California fires just recently. https://tiremeetsroad.com/2018/10/31/forgiato-wheels-brought-a-burnt-maybach-to-sema-so-i-guess-anything-can-get-in/
Dave Ambrose Posted November 13, 2018 Posted November 13, 2018 Derridean deconstruction finally meets popular culture.
iamsuperdan Posted November 13, 2018 Posted November 13, 2018 There are a lot of automotive trends and styles I don't understand. Not my style, but I respect the time and effort and thought that goes into them. This is not one of those times. Ridiculous.
Phirewriter Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 (edited) Ridiculous, perhaps. But as YouTube videos of show coverage and highlights continue to be posted, this car seems to have certainty garnered more than mild interest. Edited November 14, 2018 by Phirewriter
Joe Handley Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 I thought I saw one of the people from Forgiano say they rented it for the weekend, the scrapper wanted to charge them $10k for that carcass just for this show. They did get a bunch of attention at their booth with it though, that's what's important at these shows.
restoman Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 All that effort and they put those ugly wheels on it?
89AKurt Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 Clever marketing, *almost* makes those ugly wheels look good.

mikemodeler Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 Didn't make it over to the SEMA side this year but heard that the builds are getting more extreme as Bill stated. Not surprised someone had the idea to use a burnt out supercar and spend WAY less money, but as others have said, those wheels DIDN'T improve the look. To each his own.
Jantrix Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 No such thing as bad publicity. Or so they say.
Mark Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 I'd like to know who had the brainstorm to revive the Maybach nameplate...
Anglia105E Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 I like the two stacked up Pontiacs..... if that is what they are, Russell? David
Motor City Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 This '72 Eldo convertible that my brother saw in a junkyard recently would have been a cooler choice.
