I guess if we're really getting into "fakeness", there haven't been many cars built in the past 50 years that don't have "rich Corinthian leather", (vinyl) instead of real leather.

Or how about fake wood grain in interiors and exteriors.

If we are really going to explore "fake", it likely includes every car ever built in some form.

One of the worst examples of fakery is some modern performance cars play engine sounds through the car stereo when giving it heck. Some newer BMWs come to mind, but there are others.

Most examples of fake dazel the neighbours as much as the owners. Fake engine sounds only dazel the driver. Sad.

I'll buy that! (I always thought that sounded kinda cool!) HAHAHA

That, or a Top Fuel engine cackling at idle?

Maybe even blower surge, complete with programing to make the car move along in time at idle to the sound!

I'm not sure what would be funnier, a little EV like an i3 or Bolt idling through a parking lot making any of those sounds?

The hood vents on the 1963 Corvette should have been real, it might have cut down on the front end lift a bit.

Zora wanted these to be real. But the head guys said the rain would get in the engine compartment. Also it would be more money. Bean counters won.

Where to start, landau cloth top on the Buick Park Avenue, and wire hubcaps that were also on the Buick 88 that the wife had.  I've noticed the quad exhaust tips on many cars, such as Cadillacs, with only one real pipe.  My Mini Cooper S ('03, and '06) hood scoops were for show, aftermarket metal screens went in; and the rear bumper had fake grills.  My current '16 Honda Civic has fake grills in the bumpers.

The Ford EcoBoost engines in the Mustang and F150 do this. BMW definitely doing it too, which is weird because the BMW engines sound great and don't need any enhancement.

Fake wood interior pieces have always bothered me. And in recent years, we now have added fake carbon fibre and fake brushed aluminum to the pile.

my first car was a 1978 Thunderbird. Fake wooden dash, fake spoke hubcaps, fake fender vents, vinyl roof. And my 16 year old self put a fake dual exhaust on it...split after the muffler and two tips.

Fake sounds from a Nissan sales note: "Quietness is ordinarily a virtue in family-carrying sedans, but the sporty nature of the Maxima demands a bit of sound. "For enthusiast drivers," Perry explained,"you want to give some feedback." Engineers actually had to add a "sound generator" to produce noticeable tones while accelerating. Those specially-created sounds actually emanate from the engine's intake manifold, not the exhaust system."

They have recently eliminated this only to add it to their audio sound system

Everything here points to fake scoops on old cars but the new stuff from Japan is awash in it.

Three side scoops-all boarded up!

More front and rear scoops completely blocked off.

While it has already been covered here, I just have to say how much those fake, bogus convertible tops really burn my cookies!
So outdated!
Can't help but thinking about ol' Larry The Lounge Lizard finally gets a hottie out to Lovers Lane, only for her to say "Not unless you put the top down!"
LoL!

Many '40s cars have had fake wood in their interiors as well.  "Woodgrained" dashes are steel, painted with great skill and care to resemble wood.

If I had a customized vintage station wagon, I'd be tempted to paint the sides in faux-marble-grain effect just to be different among the woodies.  :-)

I like the fake woodgrain on wagons.  Would be neat to see it come back as an option on SUVs.

Such as this?

Yes...I liked that. That was the one year only Grand Wagoneer (ZJ).      I wonder how my 2014 Grand Cherokee (WK2) would look with woodgrain...

How has the early 60's Chrysler "Toilet Seat" trunk lid not yet come up in this discussion??? :)

My Dad used to tell me he actually added one to a '59 Fury that he had, while it seems that most people were ditching them (or wanting to) at the time.

The Prius looks particularly stupid!

Looks like he found some old rags around the house and glued them on.

It seems to be missing something though.

Oh, I know!............The Bernie Sanders bumper sticker! ;)

Of course, real wood station wagons took a lot of work to keep them looking good, so the fake stuff gives you the look without the hassle.

Maybe this is one piece of fakery that isn't so dumb after all.

That Prius top even has a notch for the gas filler door...or, charger port...or, whatever that is!

Well, let's face it - if you don't add a notch, you wind up with this:
