Gramps46 Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Well now we diecast enthusiasts are down here in the basement in the Community_Diecast Corner. Interesting choice of a label. I guess I can live with that. Hope everyone is doing OK and staying healthy.
randyc Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Works for me. IT's still the normal group and hopefully we'll get some new enthusiasts as we go. I'm glad they put the group back together. As for doing, I am still working. My wife and I are the only ones in our respective offices. Keeping things going and hoping that the effort helps when things open back up. We both found that we could not do our jobs from home. And our employers agreed with that. I am getting spoiled to the solitude of being the only one in the office, though. Be a tough adjustment when everyone comes back. Hope everyone else is doing well.
keyser Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 Glad we're not mixed in anymore. Pretty good bunch in here. I learn a lot. Be well. Don't eat or inject disinfectants though. ?
Flat32 Posted April 24, 2020 Posted April 24, 2020 This seems a logical separation for diecast models. Other than the metal vs plastic distinction what is really different is the fact they are factory manufactured finished models. I'm especially fond of the "Mint" models and my wife likes them. I don't keep them in their boxes like a collector might, but keep the boxes. Had to educate my wife to recognize the boxes that under no circumstances go to the recycle bin. She does not appreciate my plastic model stash or my 3D printed parts scattered throughout the house.

My wife's not a fan of my "hobby" either, but she tolerates it enough to let me keep a few out on display in the basement.
Flat32 Posted April 25, 2020 Posted April 25, 2020 My wife isn't a problem at all. I am the problem. Totally disorganized with a wide variety of stuff.

Plus basements usually have lots of interesting stuff in them, and many modeling workshops are in basements too (that's where mine is). Even here, the most fun section "Off-Topic" is here, and also the "quiz" section. Fun stuff! IMO it is a privilege to be in so called "forum basement". I'm not a diecast collector (as in 1:18 scale assembled models). I do have bunch of Hot Wheels and Matchboxes, and probably about a hundred of 1:43 resin and metal models. I'm still mainly a plastic model builder (although I haven't build a model kit for some time now), so I do peek into this section from time to time.
randyc Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 I am so thankful that my ex and present wife are ok with my "toy car" habit. My wife doesn't want me to have a mess in the house so I have a dedicated space - half of our 12' x 24' storage building. Can't do much in the extremem cold or heat of the year, but can still get quite a bit done. And in winter, I put all my paints in an empty ice cream bucket to bring to house so they don't freeze and have a Hobbytrayz work station I can hide in the TV cabinet in the entertainment center. I am terribly messy in my shop so it's proibably for the best. On 4/25/2020 at 3:50 PM, peteski said: Remember that basements are where the best and wildest parties are! I find stuff I forgot I even had. It's stashed everywhere. 1/43 can be fun little models. But pricey at times. I thought I was King when I bought the Franklin Mint "cars of the 60s" set. Not so much now, but still love those cars.
kilrathy10 Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Well, as I'm a bit of a "new" collector, I really like this section.... I'd been a forum member for years, before I found this section.... I didn't even know to look for a die cast section... Totally a truck modeler to be sure, but I've always liked cars and trucks and got really frustrated at the lack of current subjects out there... And when they do, finally, offer something I want, it costs an arm and a leg.... ie "Meng 1/24 scale Ford F350"..I bought 3 of them when they came out, but they all cost me almost $100 EACH!!! A lot of money for a plastic truck I still have to build... That was the last straw.... I didn't even know Action and Brookfield Collector's Guild had been making true 1/24 scale trucks for Nascar for Years... Easily converted into every day truck models for WAY cheaper; with a trailer to boot, even.... I've only been collecting for about 5 years or so, now, so that was news to me... And I absolutely LOVE it!!!! ? I hope everybody stays well, and may the Lord be with you all.... Remember, God is Still in control...

I know a lot of us come here because we are sorta new to diecasts. I have had quite a few over the years - 1/18, 1/43, and of course, 1/64 in HotWheels and such. There are so many cars avaiable in diecast that you can't get in plastic. And I am at a point in life where it's easier to buy it complete than have to plan and build. I can still work on the other plastics I have. I could probably never buy another kit and have enough to build something. And in some cases, like 69 Chevelle, I will build the Revell Plastic instead of buy the diecast. Glad you're in this section too.

And I am in the same boat...If I never bought another plastic kit and built one every week for the rest of my life, I'd still never run out of kits to build... I gotta get rid of some stuff, Man!!!.?
randyc Posted April 29, 2020 Posted April 29, 2020 I was thinking about it last night. I was working on a Tamiya Morgan 4/4. Painted the body with some Testors Extreme lacquer. The flake in that particular can were absolutely hideous. So I put down a reasonably smooth coat of automotive touch up "dark emerald green metallic" from a can with a copyright date of 1994 (LOL). So far so good. Then tried Testors One Coat Lacquer and ruined the whole job. Into the purple pond. I swear I can NOT get the hang of that clear. But my thoughts were about how much do I REALLY get out of building plastics now? And of those hundreds of kits I have, WHAT do I really want to build? I actually want quick builds at this point, where I can get fairly quick, satisfying results ( old annuals spring to mind). Or like the Morgan. It was going along great. And I am a reasonably good painter ost of the time. Til it comes to that Testors clear lacquer. That stuff really sucks the fun out of modeling for me. Which is kinda dumb. But in a couple more days, I will have the BEST 63 Corvette diecast made (according to Gramps and diecast.org). It will be complete, except for a missing white wall insert that I can make from strip plastic. And it will be ready to display and enjoy. In less than a week. I could NOT build that in a week. And for $43 shipped to my door. I would have close to that in paint and kit if I bought it today, not to mention other supplies and the time it takes - I can't build it this nice in a week. And yes, I'm slowly getting rid of older stuff.

All my diecast and either in display cases in the "study" or in our walk in closet in those 24/48 car cases (with the blue or yellow baskets). There are not may diecast I buy specifallly thinking I am going to repaint or detail but I can only imagine if I ran out of thing to build I to build I could always take out the 1,000 or so 1/64 $1 cars and paint the headlight and taillights on them which almost never have them painted on China or Thailand. What do you expect for $1 - SnakeFu? ?

I think you found a really good deal on it. Of all the '63 Corvettes I have this one has the easiest head lamps to open and they open all the way. Just a note, the head light motor on the 1:1 C2 Corvette was the same as a power window motor.
Gramps46 Posted April 29, 2020 Author Posted April 29, 2020 As you may have guessed my modeling interest since 1961 has been Le Mans racing. Then in the '80s under the influence of MCM and SAE contributors Wayne Moyer and Bill Coulter, I got interested in photographing my models in realistic settings. This brought me to collecting European diecasts to use as background pieces and once in along came my Rite Aide experience documented here. Once bitten by the bug how could I resist adding Cobras, Corvettes, Porsches, Ferraris, and old pickup trucks (?) ?

There was no local toy show in April (and all my Rite Aids are now Walgreens, BOOOOO!), so I haven't bought any new ones lately. Also, not much new at Walmart--I think the last one I bought there was the Jada '71 GTO, which was also the last diecast I worked on, over a month ago. With more time on my hands these days, I've been putting my effort into several more involved model kit projects. I know I have a diecast late '70s Vette awaiting my attention next time I need a quick slump-buster.
