13 years on MCM, & 10,000 post

Recommended Posts

Thirteen years, that's a long time. Not nearly as long as I've been in this hobby. Let's see, started building with my Dad's help back around 1955. Didn't get into cars until 1962.

This being my 10,000 post I thought I'd say a few things here.

I taught high school auto mechanics for several years in the early eighties before they decided to eliminate the Industrial arts program, computers you know. I had a model car club for the students and thought maybe this would be something  adults would like too. Four of us got together and started the Moonlight Modelers here in Phoenix about this time.

Life , 3 grandchildren, this confounded covid19, have all contributed to slowing things down. I'm still building, hey 48 years building my stash, I've got a few kits to build. But here we are stuck on the internet with all of our club meetings, swap meets and shows closed down.

I lived in England as a teen and learned one thing, " Stiff upper lip ol" boy, keep calm and carry on."

Thank you for listening and watch for my latest build, an AMT '41 Plymouth flip front HEMI Gasser.

Are you the Greg Meyers who worked for Mopar then Mazda and was from California and was on the Model Car List? I know that Greg had some nice builds and stories of 1:1 stuff the manufacturers did..

Gregg, where did you live in England as a teen? There were a lot of US air force bases in the UK back in the Sixties and Seventies were you over here as part of a services family at the time?

There's still 13 U.S military bases left in the UK including RAF Lakenheath, RAF Croughton, RAF Digby, RAF Welford, RAF Fairford, RAF Feltwell, RAF Upwood, RAF Barford St John, RAF Fylingdales and RAF Menwith Hill.

RAF Sculthorpe, 1957-1961 , 5th through 8th grade. My Dad was the commissary officer. The BX had models mostly around Christmas time. I remember the AMT Trophy series.I went for the more flashy Monogram  Long John dragster kit, motorized of course.

Too bad there's not a way to tally based on quality, not quantity. That list might look very different if so.

Let's just be happy that there are members here who actually participate.

I see boards all over the place, (this one included, I'm sure) where a large percentage of their members just hang around in the shadows and never contribute a thought, or post a word.

Conversation, no matter how trivial, is what keeps these boards alive.

Well said, Steve.  And conversation, no matter how banal, would explain why I'm here.

Gregg, Interesting to know whereabouts you were when living in England. Nearest base to me at the same time was RAF Greenham Common. My dad used to take me and my brother for a drive around the base as there was a road that ran around it by the security fence. There was a force of B47 bombers there at the time. I can remember seeing an old B29 parked up that i think was used for fire drill practice. The USAF moved out in the late 60's and the base remained unused for a number of years. But it came to life  each year for a big air tattoo that has since moved to Fairford. Back in 1972 or 1973 it was re activated temporarily and the F111's that usually flew from Upper Heyford used it for about 6 months while their own runways were being re laid.

Gotta love it! I hadn’t seen this list when I posted last about my 14,000 posts! I thought it was nothing special!

G.M. First of all congratulations on your many posts.

this thread has gone weird but I will say this forum is

ran very decently. There have only been a few times

I disagreed with moderators deleting threads, rather

than editing them. (Off topic, but on my mind).

You share a love for automobiles and models.

all good mate.?

Hear, hear, Tom!

?

Scaley Otto’s forum became a ghost town largely because of heavy-handed, elitist, holier-than-thou sanctimonious moderating.  Fortunately, this forum has been able to avoid that kind of community-killing strangleholding.  That’s why it’s fun here and this thing continues to grow and thrive.
