Still remember when Van Halen first started and couldn't believe how every song was great on their first couple of albums. Obviously Eddie's guitar playing was a big part of that. He just seemed to do amazing things and it looked so easy for him. Sad day.

I wasn't much of a fan when they were new, but time shows why he is considered a legend.  Better than much of the music done today.  RIP

Funny thing.. this episode was on last night on one of our local channels.

There are lots of musicians, but there are much fewer that take it to the level of an artist. Eddie, like Neal Peart, whom we lost in January, was one of those.

As far as I'm concerned, there are three thrones in metal guitar heaven.

Jimi Hendrix invented metal guitar. He unleashed the chaos, the fuzz, the feedback.

Eddie Van Halen showed that the chaos, the fury, the feedback, the volume...all could be controlled.

Dimebag Darrell was the ultimate master of metal guitar technique.

That's it. No more admissions, no more thrones to be added. Ever.

The social conditions that produced these guitar gods will never again exist.

The guitar god is a dying breed, and as a guitarist, this disappoints me.

Totally agree!!! My son is a guitarist and drummer. I’ve been a listener of metal for many years. Grew up listening to Van Halen and Maiden as my two favorite bands! Still are however and it may cause argument, I like the Haggar years of Halen better than the Roth years. Music the made with Roth was awesome! I just didn’t care for Roth himself that much...

RIP Eddie... though someone who can knock out “Jump” as a synth pop hit because he’d like to try something new should be celebrated as more than “just” a metal guitar hero...

best,

M.

You're not gonna like this, but I had to look up who that was.

I've heard of Pantera but never owned any of their music. I couldn't swear in a court of law that I've ever heard any of it. I did build a model Pantera, though.

No disrespect, but the older folks won't really be aware of Pantera, let alone who the members were. It's a generational thing. :)

If you like heavy music though, listen to their 2nd album, Vulgar DIsplay of Power. Absolute masterpiece.

I love all eras of VH, including the Gary Cherone era! Roth and Haggar were just so diametrically opposed though. Roth vocalized, didn't really sing, and was all about the party. Sammy has way more talent as a singer and musician, but wasn't quite the front man Roth was. I mean, Sammy is great, but as far as the "show" goes, he's no Roth!

Thanks for the recommendation. I might give that a listen.

I remember reading an interview in Rolling Stone with Eddie sometime in the late 1990's or thereabouts. He showed the reporter a drawer full of tapes that he had recorded, and said there there hundreds of hours of him just Goofing Around that Wolfgang could release after Eddie died. He said that Wolfgang could sell them for top dollar, since most of what was on those tapes had never been heard by anybody but Eddie himself.  He supposedly played a quik few minutes to the reporter, who added that it was as good or better, than anything Eddie had played onstage.

I wonder if those tapes ever existed, or still exist now.  It would be fun to hear Eddie at his peak, just showing off on his guitar.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned anything about him and Alex being model car builders when they were young.

I remember Kasey Kasem mentioning on one of the AT40 countdown shows from the mid '80s how they used to build and liked the box, with a few parts left in it to use as drums.

I think one or both are [were] still building.

About 15-18 years ago I had a conversation with someone late one night on the SA forum not long after it started that I strongly suspect was one of the VanHalen bros.

Just since my favorite podcast seems to have been hacked and I couldn't hear it today, I gave this a try. I really did. Made it through maybe four or five songs.

About a decade ago I got assigned to work with a girl who listened to this kind of thing on the radio all day long. I'm sure some of if must have been Pantera. I liked it well enough for four or five weeks and then I asked her, "can we listen to something else every other day?" Fortunately she liked all kinds of music and that was fine with her. I just couldn't stand all the SCREAMING unintelligible vocals anymore.

I see what you mean about the guitar playing. I heard several licks that were brilliant, right up there with EVH himself. You have to wade through a lot of what sounds like a giant engine in the process of grinding itself to death to get to it, though, sadly.

I had to cleanse my ears with Johnny Winter AndB)

That's very interesting Steve. That's really cool.

It is indeed sad to hear of Eddies passing. His guitar will be ever silent. A great talent, he will be missed.
