doorsovdoon Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Picked this up the other week after seeing some great looking builds of it, the 1959 Chrysler Imperial by AMT. There's basic curbside, and then there is straight up promo, which this is. It can be built as a hard top or convertible, and there's the option of custom with some really neat extras on the chrome tree. Lovely little kit, clean mould lines and nothing to really go wrong, though I did mess up a bit on the windscreen which "crept" before the glue dried and now there's a bit of a gap along the top frame. Although I tried countless times I just couldn't highlight the microscopic badge scripting to a tidy standard so I just blobbed some paint on them in frustration! The only annoying issue I came across was the decal for the dash clocks, it was so transparent that you couldn't see it when applied. It looked good on the sheet but I think the ink bled off in the water. Anyway, I'm very happy I got this one in the collection, it turned out looking awesome. Kits that are this basic are not to everyone's tastes as detail is very much an after thought, but anyone complaining that they can't be made to look as good as modern kits they're talking out their bum hole! Lol

Spottedlaurel Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Nice one Gareth. You certainly got a great shine on the paintwork.
Hard_2_Handle_454 Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Looks like it could be a twin to the one I did when they first came out. It's not a bad kit to pick up. I agree on the decals, they weren't that great. It's nice they're starting to add decals like that to the kit, but it doesn't do any good if they can't be seen once applied. I've had that problem with a few kits now.

bisc63 Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 Well done (as expected)! They do look classy in black!
espo Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 Beautiful looking paint work. I like the contrasting interior colors with the black paint. Very clean looking trim.
AMT68 Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 (edited) You produced a spectacular shine with this build and the blackwash detail on the grill is spot on. Nothing wrong with a more basic kit. I enjoy them myself and they can be a nice change of pace. Edited April 2, 2021 by AMT68
David G. Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 Looks great Gareth! You have a fabulous shine on that paint! David G.
doorsovdoon Posted April 2, 2021 Author Posted April 2, 2021 Thanks, guys, I always appreciate the comments, one of the best parts of the builds! I have to ask, what is the issue with black paint I read on so many threads? Does it not lay down too good or is it because black shows all the flaws in the bodywork? Black is the only colour that lays down like glass for me with little polishing, no orange peel and no clearcoat, I never get any trouble with it. Metallics are the paints I usually have problems with.
papajohn97 Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 This classic convertible looks fantastic in black. I envy your ability painting black gloss, I’m one of those guys you mention that has struggled trying to spray it without problems. Cool build!

The paint I use is just a generic plain black from Halfords.
misterNNL Posted April 3, 2021 Posted April 3, 2021 (edited) I love those big cruisers. Imagine driving that to take your drivers license test in high school. I was a junior when this car was new. Edited April 3, 2021 by misterNNL

Thanks, Tom. I often wonder what it would have been like to take a driving test in the late fifties, the smallest car would have been something like a mid 50's Bel Air. To us in the UK even those are massive cars! I took my test in a 1980 Nissan Sunny.
