absmiami Posted August 14, 2022 Author Posted August 14, 2022 This an engine bay shot that was taken at the Brumos Collection last year - its the Junior Special - the collector pipe is visible behind the water pipe - the scale pipe diameter may be a bit less than 1 1/2 - but i’ll surrender some scale accuracy here to make room for the plug wires … what an engine bay !

absmiami Posted August 24, 2022 Author Posted August 24, 2022 The great H.A.M.B. s site featured a thread about ten years ago w great restoration shop photos of HCS Special - Miller’s first Indy winner - and an early series 122 rear dr car - the late Gary Doucette kitted this car in 25th sc …. The Miller Junior Eight Special is a second series 122 - with some changes - but the pedal and trans set up is the same - so this my best source of info for this project - my own photos did not quite capture the setup well….
absmiami Posted August 24, 2022 Author Posted August 24, 2022 So I’ve made The pedals fr nickel silver bar and rod - with some Evergreen rod for the throttle pedal …. From studying the pictures - looks like the brake pedal sits on a rod that runs under the trans case - and the brake cables link to this rod on the right hand side of the trans case - the clutch pedal sits on a short shaft on the right hand side of the trans casing - and the throttle pedal is suspended from a short stalk that is bolted to a plate on the trans casing forward of the clutch … clear as mud - this will make sense then this is assembled …
W Humble Posted August 26, 2022 Posted August 26, 2022 I may have mentioned this (poss on another forum) but I've been messing around creating 'phantom' Miller style engines using various bases, and then just scratching things up. I wanted a Miller straight-8 looker, so using an old Monogram Indy car Offy four, I resin cast a double block and got a pretty nice eight. Not a lot of detail (not like this beaut'!) because the original was pretty basic, and I can't see little stuff so well any more -- watch out for that in aging, folks -- but it looks okay. Other base for a V-12 was a Hawk 1939 M-B GP car that had a very simple display engine -- oddly, they didn't make it fit the car -- that is easy to enhance. Wick
absmiami Posted August 26, 2022 Author Posted August 26, 2022 Chico must still be hot - no end of summer here - not close - the Hawk kit that you mention is very rare - please feel free to post pix of the MB engine from the kit if you are able …
absmiami Posted September 23, 2022 Author Posted September 23, 2022 the Millar 122s were heavily influenced by the French Grand prix cars the French - such as Peugeot - are generally credited with birthing the modern racing engine ... so it's interesting to see that the 122s had French tachometers .. black numbers / white or off white background ... later Millers - such as the 91s - changed to white on black ...
absmiami Posted September 23, 2022 Author Posted September 23, 2022 Gary of Circle Track Decals fame agreed to attempt to produce a set of these in 24th Scale - which is an act of scale foolishness and/or bravery … Anyway - he somehow pulled it off - these markings are designed to be applied over a white backing decal … which he also supplied - the black dot next to the insruments - believe it or not - depicts the water temp gauge perched on top of the radiator - which is also cool …. Bravo Gary …
Big John Posted September 24, 2022 Posted September 24, 2022 Need to set that printer up to 1200 dpi. Amazing detail work as always Andrew!
PhilX Posted November 16, 2022 Posted November 16, 2022 A true Woow project. Exactly what I would like to built ... one day ...
Codi Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 I truly enjoy all these details and attention you're giving your build. Coming together nicely Andrew. Cheers, tim
Joe Nunes Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 An amazing construction project and seeing the process come together is nothing short of inspiring. Thank you for sharing this fantastic build with us! Joe
BERT100 Posted November 18, 2022 Posted November 18, 2022 absmiami Really great "how it is done" build. I may not be able to reproduce your fine scratch building technics but seeing it done makes me think I should at least give some of them a try.
absmiami Posted November 18, 2022 Author Posted November 18, 2022 Thanks to oneandall above - the Miller is taking a brief nap whilst I wrestle w the Delage - but I’ll be wrangling some more castings fr Mr. Brad soon - and then it’s “Miller time” …
absmiami Posted January 9, 2023 Author Posted January 9, 2023 Wrangled some new castings fr Mr Bradford - so its Miller time again ….
absmiami Posted January 9, 2023 Author Posted January 9, 2023 The new and improved frame casting needs some cleanup and correction - noticable after an exploratory coat of primer - but that’s mostly due to flaws on the master (my bad) - this casting is extremely complex - doing this as a 3D printed part is possible but would not be easy to print … added some aluminum high lights w the Zero alu paint that i first tried on the Daytona Coupe …. Like this stuff …
absmiami Posted January 9, 2023 Author Posted January 9, 2023 The Junior Special was painted medium and “lime” green. The restored car at the Brumos Collection is an educated guess on the color - see my photos in page 1 of the thread …. The lighter green tops the bodywork - I’m mixing this fr these two Model Master colors -
absmiami Posted January 9, 2023 Author Posted January 9, 2023 In case you’re wondering - i’m using the color in the above shot at 3 o’clock …
absmiami Posted January 10, 2023 Author Posted January 10, 2023 Gracias - the bonnett was mastered in two halves and then joined with a scale appearing piano hinge - i’ve decided to cut it apart - see if I can use a second casting and make bonnett that will hinge …
absmiami Posted January 10, 2023 Author Posted January 10, 2023 The “teeth” of the hinge are filed - the outer three segments are - carefully - drilled w .012 drill - a larger hole will break the segments apart - no beer before this surgery …
absmiami Posted January 10, 2023 Author Posted January 10, 2023 The hinge pins are inserted into the outboard 3 segments - .010 brass - its fragile - but it should w/stand some careful handling … knock on resin … 1
cobraman Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Wow ! You have a good eye and a steady hand ! Impressive work.
