For me, my current vehicle is my choice. 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4.  I’ve done a lot of road trips in it, incl Phoenix to Cleveland.   It’s reliable, gets decent mileage (25+ hwy), has plenty of luxury/creature comforts and is very comfortable.  Plenty of space.

Nothing beats a motorhome for roadtrippin’! Getting hungry? Pull over and make whatever you want. Getting tired? Pull over and nap in an actual bed. Wanna bring home a souvenir or two? There’s plenty of space for it.

If that doesn’t count then I’d pick either a 50-51 Ford Crestliner or convertible, or go Rain Man style with a ‘49 Buick Roadmaster convertible.

I’d go with a late model Xterra. Space, and power for sure. Great durability.  Good in less than ideal road conditions. Truck-like ride and handling, but I can live with that.

Happened to a friendamine's Miata. "Economic total", but he bought it new, loved the little car, so I fixed it for thousands less than the estimate, and it's running still.

Easy....1965 - 1967 Chevy Station Wagon with woodie style panels dressed as a muscle car. LOL!

How about a slightly newer one??

Forget all the muscle cars, Winnebagos and station wagons with all that crass fake wood panelling.

My idea of a long distance touring car has to be a bang up to date Rolls Royce.   Class, comfort and arriving in style!

Love the Family Truckster Cruiser, the wood grain, and double stacked head lights are great.Just need the aunt up on the roof. And yea i agree, also need Beverly D,Angelo,?.So yea any station wagon would be good to travel in.Just like when i was a kid, cruising down to Florida in my parents 72 AMC Ambassador wagon, sitting in the way back, facing the opposite way.And of course getting car sick. And being surrounded all around by glass, lol.Or if not a wagon, maybe a Bentley Spur will do.

What vehicle would you want for a long cross country road trip and why?  I have an MX5 that I would love to go on a road trip in. The only drawbacks are lack of luggage space and no spare tire.

We did a road trip in our Miata for two weeks with my then fiancee (now wife) a few years back.  We used every available space in the car for luggage - the trunk was CRAMMED full of soft bags, the glove compartment had rolled up shirts, the little center console had socks and we had another couple of totes on the shelf behind the headrests.  We still ended up having to compromise on what to take...we took all of her stuff and I bought some tee shirts and stuff on the road as did laundry when we could :D

Was surprisingly comfortable doing 6-7-8 hours a day in the little NB....but I was ready for a day at home after two weeks of driving :D

I dearly love my NA Miata ('95 M Edition) but I'd never want to take it cross-country. I think that would count as an epic journey.

I'd want something quick, smooth, comfortable but fun in the twisty bits. A Lexus SC400 would fit the bill nicely.

What MX5 do you have? I had a 99. They are scary to operate on highways - well, at least in US and Canada - yeah, semi trucks are big, but the scariest is all the ridiculous, lifted, big tire truck clowns that can’t see anything within 150’ of the front of their trucks. It seemed EVERYBODY tailgates you when you are a tiny, low to the ground car.

Taking one cross country would be a blast of you could find the right route.

Mine is a 2013 PRHT (the red-headed step child of Miatas) with a 6MT. It is a fun car to drive! I do my best to put distance between myself and large vehicles and scary drivers.? We were planning to maybe head out to the east coast with the F250 and 5vr, but with gas prices going crazy, it may be the Mazda.?

A friend of mine in Denver has been doing sports car road trips w/ his wife for 20 years... they would pack light and go out for 2-3 weeks every summer--5000 to 10000 mile drives--first a dark green '97 BMW Z3, then later an '08 Porsche Boxster S.   Seems like a sports car could be a lot of fun if you included a lot of winding roads on a trip rather than just boring interstates..  for long drives on interstates I prefer my Jeep or a largish luxury sedan for the comfort and quiet.

I’d drive as much of Route66 as possible in this.

I've been a Mopar guy since I was a kid & the '70 Coronet is the prettiest "B" body car they ever produced.  The curvaceous lines & the lack of a front bumper are without parallel in muscle car design.  It just looks the part.

I have always had a plan to one day go cross country in my 1964 dodge d100 when I finish it. It was the first new vehicle that my great grandparents bought new with a 225 slant 6, 3 on the tree and 2wd. So far I have got a 440 with 727 auto as well as the axles and t case to convert it to a 4X4. I want to leave the body as it is since there is only minor cosmetic rust and dents. My main goal would be to go to Moab or Alaska with it and do some 4X4ing and exploring old back roads.

I also picked up a 71 Plymouth valiant that I am building as a road race/pro touring style car that I would really like to do the hot rod power tour and pikes peak with it.
