Matt Bacon Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Far from my best work, and if I'm honest, I'm glad to get it off the bench at last. Work hassles and COVID have sapped my mojo, and holidays and the garden have eaten into bench time, so I'm looking for a restart for the Autumn. The kit fought me all the way, some of which reflected its age, some my ineptness... It's a comprehensive kit, with parts for many versions of the Corvair, but I'd only recommend it if you're a regular builder who gets their kicks from beating recalcitrant plastic into submission or you absolutely have to have a Corvair on your shelf. best, M. 8
70 Sting Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 That turned out great! Been looking past this kit whenever I see one… might have to reconsider. ? 1
TransAmMike Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Very sharp lookin' Stinger. Great job Matt? 1
Kah puts Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Glad you stuck with it, looks fantastic. 1
espo Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Great looking modified Corvair. Thes were terrors in their class in SCCA racing. You captured the look of the trim and paint work. 1
bbowser Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Very cool! I like the added sheetmetal on the back windows and opening the vents on the hood. 1
mark 23 Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Nice build. I found some NOS Stinger decals on ebay so of course I had to go out & buy the AMT Prestige kit. You are right about the kit & the build it had me going crazy at times. I somehow lost one of the headers, & that's all I need to complete. I'm gonna modify some parts box headers & then it will be done. 1
Rich Chernosky Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Built one these myself along with a stock version. Yours turned out great. You are right it wasn't the best kit but you perservered. 1
happy grumpy Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Great job on the Corvair, always liked that car even when it had all the bad press, which was totally underserved IMHO. 1
Matt Bacon Posted September 28, 2022 Author Posted September 28, 2022 Thanks, gentlemen... with a bit more distance from the battle to finish the build, I'm remembering WHY I wanted to have a Stinger on my shelf! I don't think anyone will ever do a Corvair again, so we have what we have. best, M.
Matt Bacon Posted March 7 Author Posted March 7 @250 Testa Rossa I made them myself. For small badges like these, I’ve found you don’t need to use decal paper. I found a good logo on the web, sized it down to the diameter I needed for the bosses on the kit, and printed them high resolution and best quality on glossy photo paper. Then, with a fresh #11 blade I cut around the logo, but not too deep — you’re not trying to cut it out of the paper. Finally with a little care and practice you can separate the top layer of the paper with the ink on from the thickness below. I stick them in place with “Formula 560 Canopy Glue” which I have on hand for windows and headlights etc, but a dot of any white PVA type glue will do. I wouldn’t use this method for anything much bigger than a badge or logo, but it beats printing on white or clear decal paper. With white, even when it’s sealed with clear varnish, if you cut close to the print it’ll start to bleed as soon as you put it in the water, and with clear, even if you cut it larger, the print is much more transparent so you don’t get the colour density… best, M.
