Was planning to join the Navy in 1968 after high school graduation with my eyes on submarine duty. An extensive Cyst surgery on my tailbone area put a quick halt to any service plans and I always regretted that situation. Could not even get past my draft physical because of the surgery although I was able to serve as a law enforcement officer for four years beginning in 1971. Nevertheless I want to offer a special Thank You to all of you veterans for your service to America. You are all heroes, every one of you, and will always remain so in my mind. Thank you!

Joe

Lee Owens

Sergeant

US Army

M1A1 tank crew member

Overseas assignment: Vilseck (Rose Barracks) Germany 1996-2000. Texas National Guard 2000-2008.

Lots of good times. I got to see Europe. Fascinating job/never fired a shot in anger. Very proud to have done my small part. I learned a lot. Not just how to operate a tank. I think the last time I said “I don’t know” was 1996. A Major wanted to know if officer so and so was in that big tent. I said I don’t know. He told me that the proper reply is “I can find out, sir”. Treat people with respect. It goes a long way. I get sent to deal with “difficult” customers. I talk to them the same way I talked to officers. It gets good results 99% of the time.

All my service was outside the U.S.!

Although I was made an honourary member of a U.S. unit while in Germany so I guess that counts!

I also thank you all for your service.

While not for the same reason Bill mentioned, I'm not sure if providing the details some of you do is such a good idea on a public forum.  There are scammers out there who might be able to use that info for not so kosher purposes.  I'm not paranoid, but the Internet is a wast wasteland full of bad people.  Just saying  . . .

I think we are all grown adults that can discuss our military service without delving into the politics of of ownership of certain pieces of equipment we used.

We are already on a forum where the use of your real name is pretty much required or at least strongly recommended so any hope of complete anonymity is already gone. I highly doubt the fact that I drove an Army truck 40+ years ago has any value to a scammer. Yes, precautions are needed but can be taken too far as well.

Tony, I don't think you understood my post.  It has nothing to do with lack of anonymity or guns.  Bill (Ace) understand where I'm coming from. If you don't - just ignore my advice.  This is not the time nor place for discussing this.  Thank you for your service.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your sacrifice and service keeping the USA safe.

Even though I never served I always have supported and respected our troops. My Pop was in the Army in the mid-1950's. He was in the motor pool (he loved everything cars) at Fort Dix, NJ. Later he drove a Jeep for a Bird Colonel who insisted having the Jeep completely uncovered and have the wind shield laying on the hood no matter the weather.

Pic of his flag at my Mom's place. He passed in 2020 of Parkinson's.
