Tom Geiger Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Wait wait wait!!! We'd do much better by joining forces! You get west of the Mississippi and I'll take east! Then we franchise out Europe and the rest of the world!
Danno Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Wait wait wait!!! We'd do much better by joining forces! You get west of the Mississippi and I'll take east! Then we franchise out Europe and the rest of the world! Good plan! EastPro and WestPro. Then, we can start playoffs and an annual super bowl! {Or, in the visage of government efficiency, you take West of the Missississississippi and I'll take East of the Missouri!}

No two certificates shall be alike, if you send me 8 models, you will receive 2 certificates, and so on..... Edited June 6, 2013 by Draggon

(All apologies to anyone whom might be offended by this post ...)
Draggon Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 (edited) I'm not falling for it John, every pro modeler knows that "promodeler" certificates have been counterfeited and the real deal is a "Pro Modeler" Certificate. Even the originator of this thread, Ray, has acknowledged this in the topic heading. Sheesh Its 2 words. Oh, and Bob, your ring is priceless and will be delivered to you upon registration and cash deposit of $5,000 dollars U.S. with the First Nigerian Bank of Nigeria Unlimited Corporation, Limited. Danno Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 I'm not falling for it John, unless it comes with a "certificate of authenticity". Oh, and Bob, your ring is priceless and will be delivered to you upon registration and cash deposit of $5,000 dollars U.S. with the First Nigerian Bank of Nigeria Unlimited Corporation, Limited. Does that make Bob a "Pro Ringer?"
PappyD340 Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Come on guys you have got to be kidding me, you mean there is a such thing as a pro modeler??
southpier Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 perhaps more in the emotional sense than the technical, I vote a resounding "Yes!" a lot of them are showcased here: http://www.themodelcarmuseum.org/index.html
sjordan2 Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 (edited) Time to state the obvious. There are famous pro modelers who are masters of their trade -- Gerald Wingrove, Juha Airio, the staff at Amalgam, Marvin and Jorge at modelmotorcars.com, Misko, Fine Art Models, etc. etc. etc., and a few others who are members here (I won't name them for fear of leaving anyone out). They sell models for hundreds of dollars, up to 5 figures. They write books. They have well-developed websites. It doesn't matter what category of models they build, and many of them cover a spectrum. As long as you've got a steady stream of customers who give you a living, you're a pro modeler, regardless of the level of quality. As an ad agency creative director, I had to review the portfolios of multiple "professional" designers and art directors, and I don't know how many of them could support themselves with such a low quality of work. As stated time after time here, the people who call themselves "pro modelers" on eBay are usually blowing smoke up everyone's wazoo, primarily their own. Edited June 6, 2013 by sjordan2

grayghost Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Tom those Ginzu Knives were the thing back in the day.

I like to think of myself as a Pro-Crastinator.

Gerald Wingrove would be the one who's a Pro Modeller, since - being British - he put two Ls in his book titles, "The Complete Car Modeller." The others are pro modelers.

Phirewriter Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 The above mentioned truck I believe should be a pro built. Pretty Rough Overall
martin9428 Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 I feel that if a person looks at a model(not the builder) and says what great work; it looks as if a professional built it, means it is a professional build. Not the modelers opinion UNLESS he/she works in a professional capacity such as movie props ect. I worked as a hardwood floor installer and refinisher for 25 years, I was a customer stain guy and although I was good at it, I would have never called myself a professional because, I was still learning everyday. I was however very good at what I did. So, self-imposed professionalism is more of an ego thing as, opposed to someone telling you it was a professional job.
Dave Van Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 I have a buddy....he started me build models 55+ years ago!!!! He does not post on the net as 99% of his builds are on commission. And his clients would be known to most people...but almost all of them do not want to be identified. But I have been with him on deliveries of completed projects. I'd call him a PRO but he does not call himself that. His builds are very expensive and the clients are happy to pay.
bobthehobbyguy Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Unfortunately in most cases probuilt is as meaningful as vintage and rare in most cases. The quality of a model is based on its appearance.
peteski Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 To me the term seems to be very clear (but often misused). Professional (or a Pro) is a person who's profession (and income) is whatever he does for a living. If someone builds models for profit, then he is a Pro builder. So if someone builds model for sale anywhere (doing it on commission, or even doing it on eBay), he is Pro. But by that definition, one of those eBay "Pros" can also be a hack - as long as he can sell his models as they were (poorly) built.
Tommy124 Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 (edited) I have thought about it and wasn't quite decided. Then today I found my personal answer to this, here on the forum. To me, a pro-modeler... ...comes up with great results like this: and... ...has a website indicating building prices for their clients! https://www.reality-scaled.com/pricing Edited March 15, 2019 by Tommy124
Junkman Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 A pro built model is a pro built model if it's built by Steven Guthmiller. Or Paul Hettick. Or Juha Airio. Because compared with those gods, I'm just an ordinary clown.

In fact, there are a lot of incredibly talented builders on this forum. We are fortunate to see their work and learn from them. I myself am another clown.
