I've found that Closed Captioning is necessary for all TV watching now. But, even more so, as I have an affection for many British TV shows. Brit Box has them, but without C.C. I'd never be able to make heads or tales of what is going on. Taggart and New Tricks are some of my favorites, and Taggart requires the C.C. Oddly, the comedy "Keeping Up Appearances" is easy to understand most of the time. That shows has put the phrase "Mind the Cows, Richard" permanently in the Family Lexicon. Lastly, in the last few years, American TV/Movie Audio quality has gone badly downhill. Muddy Audio, Mumbling, Soft Speech, Too Loud Background Music, and just a general degradation of Audio Quality, make TV Viewing especially harder. 2
Rob Hall Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 I find myself watching CC with all UK TV and some American shows. I occasionally watch Scandinavian, French, German shows, so I use CC for them also. 1
stavanzer Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 My Wife and I have been watching Chinese and Korean Soap Operas, and we now chose which ones to watch based only on the quality of the closed captions.
espo Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Keeping Up Appearances has always seemed funny. The Oslo character and his sister-in-law living upstairs with daddy. The one that was always the funniest was Coupling. They tried to do a US version, but it never did compare. The things they had the Jeff character doing would have you laughing so hard it would take a couple of viewings of the show to get all of the dialog.

While this is a thread about irksome things, I can't help but commend on the Brit sitcoms from the '70s and '80s. I have DVD sets of Keeping up Appearances and Are You Being Served. Those shows are so funny and well done. I also enjoyed One Foot In The Grave. Couplings was a bit later, but it was funny too. So was Vicar of Dibley.
Ace-Garageguy Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 (edited) Trying to communicate in a world where average reading comprehension has deteriorated to the point that the "point" of anything written (if it's more complex than "see Spot run") is regularly missed. EDIT: I crossed out "reading" and "written", because comprehension of strings of spoken words are regularly misunderstood as well, and phrases and single words are often taken entirely out of context to be twisted into something the speaker simply didn't say. This is regularly done by "intelligent, educated" people. Hmmmmmm... Edited December 15, 2022 by Ace-Garageguy CLARITY 4

In a society as degenerative and morally bankrupt as ours this should come as no surprise. There’s no need to burn books if the public is too ignorant to read. 2

TonyK Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Been awhile since anyone has been irked with USPS so I'll toss this on here. Placed an order with Model Roundup who promptly shipped it on 12/08. USPS tracking says departed their facility on 12/11 and I'll get it on 12/14. All sounded good until 12/14 rolls around and I get nothing and now shows "moving through network" and will arrive late. Means nothing to me. I understand this time of year can get hectic but it's still frustrating to give you a delivery date and then leave you hanging. Rant over.

Ah,don’t get me started on the USPS,lol.Seriously,i often wonder what is wrong with the people that work there. What your describing has happened to me so many times,i just wanna go postal on them.??.Also try reaching the toll free number for them, and all you get are recordings that just confuse you,and if you do need to speak with someone, you are put on hold for a long time.I think one time i waited on hold for about 30 mins. Finally one of their so called humans picked up the phone. When i asked her why the wait time was so long, she completely avoided the question, and just said “what can i help you with today sir?”..Anyway,like i said,i know how frustrating they can be ?.Sheesh. Tom Geiger Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 I don't know if I shared it here, but a few weeks ago my neighbor hit my basketball hoop post, knocking it down. I didn't care about that as I was contemplating taking it down anyway. But he knocked it into our Buick Lacrosse, denting the left rear door and quarter panel. Went to one shop and got a $2500 estimate. Am looking for another shop for a better quote, as neighbor said he'd pay out of pocket... only I don't think he has any clue the number! Anyway, wife texts me the other day. She's sitting at a red light and a guy in a Forrester clobbers same Buick in the back bumper! Now the bumper is cracked and needs replacing! 1

NYLIBUD Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Ok,I know this post is a bit long, sorry.Well today I crossed paths with some crazy stupid moronic woman who really “Irked”me,for lack of a better word?%#+@&!!!..Anyway,I was going to a doctors appt with my father. However the parking lot at the office is a real nightmare,to the point that they offer valet parking. We were running a bit late, and there was a pretty long line of cars just trying to get into the lot. Then all of a sudden we see a person leaving,so we were like great an open spot.We start to turn into the spot, when all of a sudden this idiotic bi*** two cars behind us starts hitting her horn ,and wouldn’t stop.We didn’t have any idea where it was coming from, and had no idea she was honking at us.So we then just pulled into the spot.At which point this crazy woman jumps out of her car and comes over to us,knocks on my window, screaming at us that she was waiting for ten mins to pull into the spot.I’m telling her that she was behind us and how were we supposed to know that she was waiting for the spot, not to mention that she couldn’t be waiting ten minutes for the spot because we were in front of her.Well she just continued to yell at us,just going on again that she was waiting for the spot.At which point I did what anybody?? in that position would’ve done,I screamed and cursed her out,and told her where to go.Lol..But then for some reason my father decided to let this crazy a** witch to park in the spot..Arrrggg??,whatever ?.I really had to vent that.Ahhh.Now i feel better.Lol. 2

"Will pay out of pocket" often = "will drag my feet until it becomes too late to report, then deny everything". I'd make sure there is a report at the very least. I run everything through insurance, that's why I have it...particularly "uninsured motorist" coverage. Next time you drive somewhere, count off the vehicles as you drive, and figure that, at the very least, every fourth or fifth one has no insurance. In some areas, make that every other one. No money for insurance, no money to pay for any damage they might do... 1

Once he hears the numbers it will probably go to his homeowners insurance since he was on his lawn tractor.
oldnslow Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Went into the kitchen to make my first cup of life sustaining fluid and the fluorescent fixture does nothing , drats , now I have to replace the tubes , or so I thought . After a round of getting the wooden cover off and replacing the bulbs , still nothing , drats again , out searching in the garage for ballasts , yes , 2 , to replace the ones in the fixture . Find one and see a stack of 2X4 drop in fixtures from an office remodel that I collected from a dumpster , bingo , opened one up and it has a single 4 lamp electronic ballast , looks like a new replacement , so I take that one out and head back in to play electrician . Well . of course the wiring doesn't match up and I end up stripping the fixture , move the sockets around and rewiring to match the new ballast , it only took about 3 sessions of work a little and sit down and rest a little , it's been many years since I did any of this kind of work and I'm working over my head standing in a dinning room chair . Finally I have light again in the kitchen and I can make my life sustaining fluid . Happy Ending 1
Calb56 Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 I work in mass transit operating light rail commuter trains. Part of our job is transporting "non-destination" riders, who stay on the train all day long. This morning, I was physically threatened by one, which ended up escalating to the point of police intervention. Most of the time, it's just verbal and I've come to accept that it's just part of the job. This time he went after me with a metal pole and threatened to beat my *blankity blank blank". He was arrested for "menacing " and I was removed from the train for the remainder of the day. I'm honestly not sure where we are heading as a society. We have multiple assaults, trains held for "noxious fumes", i.e. smoking of hard drugs in the train, etc several times a day. So... I'm sitting here, filling out reports with my adrenaline sky high. Rant over. 4

Anyway, wife texts me the other day. She's sitting at a red light and a guy in a Forrester clobbers same Buick in the back bumper! Now the bumper is cracked and needs replacing! The cost of any body work on cars today is astronomical. Had a close encounter with the garage door frame last year, I can explain but it would be rather boring to most. The dealership and another well respected body shop were both over $2500.00 estimate to repair. The dealership even said the door would have to be removed and taken apart to be sure the door safety beam hadn't been damaged. This was a small crease that didn't even break the paint. I remembered a small one-man shop that had removed the spoiler and some paint detailing for me on another car and he had been reasonable and did great work. His estimate was $400.00 and if you saw it, you would never know that anything had ever happened. The two points I'm trying to make are 1: Should a dealership or body shop that does a lot of insurance work usually report to Car Fax and others that body work had been done. While this is fair enough, this will show up someday in the future when you're trading in your car. This will have an effect on the trade-in value. So beyond getting your car repaired your car has also lost value due to the damage done to it. Who pays for that? 2: Should you have a smaller local shop that doesn't report to Car Fax or others, you may be able to get the repairs done just as well and keep the value of your car intact. You should check some of their before and after work if possible.

Not sure of the "parking lot edict" in your area, but in most areas where I have lived you would put on your turn signal to express your intent to take the parking spot when it is vacated. Most of the time this works fine, and the other driver goes on about the parking lot looking for another spot. In your instance and considering the other persons actions your father's suggestion may have saved you some scratches and minor body damage to your car when you got out of sight,
