The biggest problem is that many governmental entities have laws or ordinances that require acceptance of the lowest bidder. I work in government, and in my last job, I was involved in the bid process to select bidders for some of the contracts the agency I worked for was responsible. The statutes we worked under did not require acceptance of the lowest bid, but if we wanted a higher bid, the justification we had to provide was so onerous that it was not worth the hassle. In theory, these statutes and ordinances make sense because the governmental agencies are trying to save the tax payer money. However, in practice it goes sideways very quickly. Looks to me like that crew is already cut pretty much to the bone. It's almost inconceivable to dig a hole without at LEAST an environmental-impact manager, and a specifications-compliance manager. This person has been a long time member here and claims to be knowledgeable but yet took an opportunity to question several members who also replied to the topic. My replies were among those deleted as apparently they were seen as being inflammatory along with this "one member's". He goes on to make some more clueless comments and I guess because of his "standing" here, gets a pass. Way I see it, the highest bid prior to closing wins. I don't personally use a sniper program, but hey, eBay allows them, and it's their game, their rules. Then I walk away and wait. If I get it great, if not, it was more than I was willing to pay. Since Ebay automatically raises my bids until my max is reached I don't need to do anything else. Been working for me since the 90's. I prefer buy it now these days, but once in a great while something shows up as an auction that I really want. I also keep eBay set on "Ending Soonest" for models, just in case I can swoop in at the last minute and pick up a good deal. That does have its dangers. There isn't much time to check out the kit. So one of these days, I'll probably fork over $49.95 for an empty box... One of my weirdest and happiest eBay experiences: probably back in the 90's, I put up the Matchbox 1/12 scale Vincent Black Shadow kit for auction. Two bidders got in a war and it went for about $75. That kit was hard to find back then and I immediately regretted selling it. Just a few days later I saw another one about to end with no bidders. I got it for the minimum bid, which was about $15. Often you will find a "Buy It Now" for less than their current bid! I use eSnipe.com for my proxy bids. I place my bids when ever I want and esnipe delivers them six seconds (my choice of timing) before the end time. That way I bid once, nobody can see my intent to bid against me, and if someone bids higher in the meantime, oh well there will be another one. I'm never pushed into auction fever! And another good point about esnipe is that my bids have not been placed on eBay. Just about every time I do an internet search for information (as opposed to parts), I come across all kinds of fascinating things I want to know more about. I have wide-ranging interests, and though I flag a lot of stuff to go back to read, I only ever get to about 10% of it. And even though I'm fairly well-informed and aware, and know a bit about a lot of things, I also find that there is so much in the world that I'm completely ignorant about, and I could spend the entire rest of my life reading and researching, and never scratch the surface in the gaps in my knowledge.
