Perhaps it's called reality? Ah, I suffer from reality...
Gramps46 Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 The darn squirrels chewed through the wires of the Christmas lights on the outdoor tree that I decorate every year. Not in just one place but at least 6 places.

Perhaps it's called reality?... There is actually an inverse term to the Dunning-Kruger effect, called "impostor syndrome". It occurs when actual experts in a field doubt their own knowledge, and feel as though they're pretending to know more than they do. There is also the tendency among people of higher cognitive ability to realize that for as much as they may know, there's a WHOLE LOT MORE that they don't know. This is a healthy way to be, often comes after a lifetime's experience, and tends to make even acknowledged "experts" double-fact-check what they say prior to saying it. Every day, I interact with people who know things I don't, or who know more than I do (from whom I learn a great deal), and a lot more people who know very little (and think they know everything about everything). OldTrucker Posted December 24, 2018 Posted December 24, 2018 Te wife feeds the songbirds. She has a feeder that looks like a barn. Had to put a squirrel guard on to keep the rats with bushy tails from emptying it in a matter of an hour and then chewing holes into it when no more would come out.(first one destroyed) She looks out the window this morning and say "oh look at that beautiful cardinal and just as she says it a feral cat (we have hundreds out here it seems) came flying through the air taking the bird off the feeder! Wife screams and then cusses like a sailor on shore leave! I break out the c02 pellet gun borrowed from my son, crack open the back door and squeeze off 4 shots at which the cat jumps about 6 foot into the air with bird still in mouth and lands in the neighbors yaed and doesn't move! That thing worked better than I thought it would! Moved it out by the curb and about a hour later the maintenance lady was cruising through stops and tosses cat into her truck bed. and moves on! Guy next door won't fix his underpinning and about half a dozen cats live under his trailer.

I'm surprised too that a CO2 gun would work that well. I have a fairly high powered break-barrel .22 airgun and it only JUST does the job on squirrels out to about 15 yards.

I have one indoor/outdoor cat I rescued as a 4-week old kitten after it was abandoned under my house by a feral queen. I feed the outdoor feral cats, and have been getting them to trust me. Typically, by this time in the season, I've killed over a dozen rats that came in the house from the wooded lot. So far this year, no rats. I really wouldn't want to be the guy who shoots one of my cats. PS. I feed the birds too. Suet feeders in winter that squirrels can't get at and cats can't ambush. Seed on the ground or on the porch usually. With all the cats around, the squirrels stay away, and the birds are very wary and very quick. Cat gets a bird, well, it's a jungle out there. It's called "survival of the fittest". Only slow, stupid birds get eaten. Edited December 24, 2018 by Ace-Garageguy

NYLIBUD Posted December 25, 2018 Posted December 25, 2018 (edited) Well I went shopping today, and let me say,I'm DONE.Anyway, every store I went to I had to pay for the stupid little plastic bags.People actually think this whole "buy a bag,"for lack of a better term,is actually set up to help the environment.Thats total bull. The store getting paid all that extra money is the only thing that they care about.Ok,fine a nickel, big deal.My problem,is that the bags are now weaker then before, and are total junk. They all ripped and fell apart just as I was getting them out of my car tonight.People try and fill the bags so u don't waste money on another stupid bag,But again in doing so,all you get are ripped bags, and broken eggs Edited December 25, 2018 by NYLIBUD

Didn't think it would either. Usually pop one and they steer clear of my yard after that. They come out about 4 times a year and trap them. They remove 100+ kittens every year and put down about 30 cats who are diseased. They neuter or spay older healthy ones ear notch them and return them to the area. Kittens and young adults the put up for adoption. I along with a few neighbors were trapping them and calling the local shelter but they quit taking them. Now the park calls an outside no kill to do it.

We keep a small supply of bags in our vehicles just in case we need to stop there. Up in the Washington, DC area, Walgreens & CVS charge 5 cents a bag. Ridiculous.

redneckrigger Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 Well, this irked me last night.............watching NBC's New Years Eve show, which we QUICKLY switched to ABC, and having Chrissy Teigen discussing "steaming" of one of her body parts.................um, no, thank you, not for family viewing. Disgusting.

peteski Posted January 2, 2019 Posted January 2, 2019 I guess by not even knowing who Chrissy Teigen is I'm ahead of the game here. No need to elaborate - I'm ok not knowing (I'm not stupid - I suspect she was a host of the program). But it's ok.

High octane Posted January 4, 2019 Posted January 4, 2019 What irked me today was paying our auto insurance and it has gone up. I went into the office to complain and told them that my wife and I are retired and drive less, so how can our rates go up? They give me some BS about discounts if they can use our cell phones to record where we've been, and I told them I don't want discounts but lower rates. Think I'll be shopping around the next time the premiums are due.

Been with them for decades, great service, and their rates are WAY lower than the giants who spend spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year with TV ads telling you how low their rates are.
