MPC 68 Corvette metal springs size
hedotwo replied to hedotwo's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks! That will work. -
While I don't see these two kits listed on Home | Scale Auto Model Kit Reviews & Reference (proboards.com) , I use this site in conjunction with Drastic Plastic. I check this site first as it loads the entire instructions to scroll through, whereas DP is a page turner. Not a biggie against DP though.

Would someone be able to post a pic of one of the coil springs that MPC used on the 68 Corvette (and others) along with the measurements? Obviously, I have a junkyard kit that is missing the springs and I'd like to try and wind my own. Thanks a bunch!

I looked in my complete 62 New Yorker kit and sure enough there were the wheel covers you ID'd. And the 64 Merc covers checked out as well. Thanks!

Bingo Mark! ? I have a couple of junkers/parts and sure enough it works. Thanks

I can't argue with that guess. For now, I'll go with that ?

I've had one for years and use it periodically for stubborn things. I never thought to try it. Thanks Bill.

Thanks all for the comments and the video links. I think I'll give it a try and see how it works out. Before I do, however, I'll test on a pieces of scrap that've been painted black with acrylic, lacquer, and enamel. I'll see how the peroxide affects each. It'd be pretty hard to soak the body without soaking the roof but I guess I could just repaint the roof if it comes off.

Hmm.. thought I'd read it somewhere but likely wrong I guess. Thanks

For the first time I'm going to see if soaking a yellowed promo in peroxide will work. I can search for that answer, but the promo I want to soak has a black vinyl top. Will the peroxide harm the painted vinyl roof? I'm guessing it might but thought I'd ask.

Hmmm... I can take a look next time I'm on the bench with it. Seems like it might be an option. Thanks. -

After much sanding to remove fine printer lines I was finally able to finish prepping the body and priming. Before color coats I test fit both front grille, front and rear bumpers and found the front grille a skosh too wide to fit properly flush with the body side. Attached pics show various options I'd have in placing it without any mods. I could have one side flush, but the opposite would really stick out proud. Centering both sides leaves it less proud on both sides but still, in my opinion, looking funky. Sanding the width isn't an option as there is nice trim surrounding the side marker lights that I'd hate to lose. Currently from the front view the grille and headlights fit nicely to the leading edge of the hood. I considered trying to narrow the overall width of the assembly by cutting through the very center of the grille but the grille forms a peak in the very center that I think would be hard to save when I'd put the two pieces back together ?. So, lacking a spare grille to experiment with, I'm probably just going to center it and move on. As usual, I'm likely being too critical but I'm replicating a Caprice we bought new in 77 and I'd like it to be right. Centered... Centered... Flush.... Passenger side when drivers side is flush... Decent hood to grille fit when mostly centered... Venting over and done ? -
I just had a feeling you'd jump in Mark ?. Thanks everyone!

Totally agree with the Corvair rear bumper. But, not so sure about C being a C2 Vette rear. I think the C2's were split bumpers front and rear?

Hopefully these photos aren't too confusing. I'm sorting out my spare parts and these have me stumpted. Any ideas? Thanks!

I agree with Greg. Their PE saws are great and I'd be lost without them.

Been busy with summer so I haven't had a chance to do much more than prep and prime the 3d body. I have time to look for the '91 kit, but I don't want to spend too much on a kit just to use the running gear and chassis. It's going to end up in my display case anyway. But, if I do find one that isn't too much I'll maybe do it. I already modded that spare '65 Riviera chassis that I've had lying around so worst case I use that. It fits nicely, but obviously isn't correct for the Caprice. Definitely not going to open up the engine bay though. The hood looks great right now and generally when I cut out a hood (even with a really thin PE saw) it never looks that good. And again, it'll be in a case for the remainder of my lifetime, likely never wanting to open the hood anyway ? -
You win! Thanks ?

I have 66 and 67 Cyclone annuals that I can check later when I get home. I think we're getting close.... ?

Got started sanding on the 3D printed 1977 Caprice 4dr, but still lots to do. First time working with a 3D resin but so far, so good. I was also able to find a suitable chassis/running gear for the build. It's from the often repopped '65 Riviera. Minor tweeking made it fit nicely. First thing is I needed to deepen the panel lines before sanding to make sure I didn't lose them. Ok, so it's not correct for the Caprice, and it's a generic metal axle chassis. But.... I'm good with it.
