Bentley Blower 1930, Airfix 1:12
DonW replied to primabaleron's topic in Other Racing: Road Racing, Salt Flat Racers
Lovely! Well done. -
Yes, this is an interesting challenge for sure!

No wonder it went so well. That's a Speed Six, 6597cc / 402 cubic inches, OHC and 4 valves per cylinder. What identifies it are the parallel sides to the radiator itself and the cylindrical alloy casting in front of the radiator, between the dumb-irons, which is the dynamo. Only the Speed Six and the Big Six had this. Not to be confused with the supercharger that sat in the same place on the Blower four and a half litre cars. Thanks for posting, Phil -Don.

I built one of those, brush painted Humbrol yellow with a matt black roof. It was very slightly chunky, thick plastic too as I recall...

Billie J Kramer...! And that other no-hope beat combo. Didn't they know guitar bands are on their way out? My sisters used to go to gigs like that. Cheers, -Don.
-
Hi Craig I dreaded seeing rubber bands on huge rims when I clicked into this thread and I'm instead delighted to see a muscle car with proper wheels and tyres! Cheers, -Don.

Vintage Bentleys are a passion of mine, my father owned a 1930 Speed 6 when I was in my 'teens and i absorbed all about the cars. But I never saw one like that! Have you got any photos? A properly set up Blower with the right bodywork - like on this lovely model - is good for 125 miles per hour, the team cars and other tuned ones even more. Many of the more sporting ones would give a 65 Falcon a run for it's money on a racetrack. Not so much off the lights. Thanks, -Don.

? I actually learned the difference from a gentleman who turned up at work some years ago in a DB MKIII, the first one I remember seeing up close! Years earlier I had a memorable ride in a DB2 driven by a schoolfriends' Mum and had a ride many years later in a work colleagues' later model Vantage but I've never ridden in a DB5 which to me is the grail. Cheers, -Don.

Lovely model and interesting model history. Technically the 'DB3' model type refers to the sports racer: The forerunner to the DB4 was known as the DB MK III: Even Ian Fleming himself got this confused, so the car is referred to in the book as a DB3, which it wasn't! Apologies for being pedantic, and thanks for posting!

Really good concept and realisation. I'd lose the fish on the left and reduce the left lock so as to show the front wheels from a broader angle so you could see the spokes but it's so right dynamically!

Parking wardens. I stopped in town to use the cash-point. A lurking traffic warden crossed the road and took a photo of my car. I finished drawing out my cash and went back to the car, suggesting that the warden should get a life. He started saying "I'm only doing my j..." so I pointed out the his lot were killing the town - it used to get a lot of passing trade but nowadays if you're not entitled to a demarcated space the local parking patrol slaps a ticket on you. So he began to say as I was leaving "I'm only doing my job". I'm glad however that I drive a V8. I felt better as I left.. ps. Sorry about your laptop.

? It's close but this vehicle is in a class of it's own, to my mind! I can't wait to find out what it is.

I like your thinking! California (well, Arizona) dreaming...

I reckon so, Matt!

Thanks for this, lovely to see. I don't personally get it. It's like having a box of Belgian chocolates and never eating them. For me the '32 needs to be covered in road rash and highway dirt, maybe ticking and cooling in the early evening sun over Big Sur. Or wherever else you wanted to be. But it's completely up to Mr Hetfeild. Does anyone know if he he drives them much?
-
Is that young Mr Kossoff? Did he drive a Coronet??
-
Does that make the '32 Ford the 'Stairway to Heaven'? BTW What are we on about in this thread? I totally agree, sir! I'm as free as a board now...(Thanks, Snake!)
-
OMG! That's the worst looking vehicle I have ever seen.
-
Hey Dan, that's a proper non-sequitur! Did you mean to post this in 'What irked you today'??

Maybe some of the artificial grass is your friend with this problem, but you're the expert. Here's the monolith from a scene in the film in all it's glory: It's a great film. All the best, -Don.
-
Fantastically evocative, although dare I suggest the stone pillars need 'rooting' to the pavement? At the moment they appear reminiscent of the monolith in 2001 A Space Odyssey, complete in themselves but not integrated with the rest of the scene. If this is still WIP I apologise - 'Fools and children...' Cheers, -Don.

The cutaways are especially fascinating - I really had no idea these 'Vettes were like that under the skin. You can learn a lot from models! Thanks Peter for building and posting these. -
When cars (or bikes etc) run at speed trials such as at Bonneville, they use proper timing equipment. They don't rely on the speedometer. Speedos are notoriously inaccurate. Just saying. Still sounds like the Vicky was running pretty fast enough on public roads. It's a nice car.

Yep, there's good and bad in all of us! ??
