Help identifying wheels
StevenGuthmiller replied to Modlbldr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree. I have a hunch that these are the same wheels included in the old MPC '69 Charger 500 kit. Although, they look very close to the Magnum 500s in the AMT Challenger as well. Either way, they are definitely Magnum 500 wheels. They are not Pontiac Rally II. Steve -
Probably more like, "that's what they ASK for them on ebay". Steve

What Did You Have for Dinner?
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Not the prettiest meal ever, but it was pretty tasty. Linguine with mushrooms & tomatoes in a Parmesan cream sauce. Topped with crispy fried onions & ricotta cheese. I'll let that digest for a while & then top it off with a great big slab of chocolate cake with peanut butter icing! Steve -
There are actually quite a few of these '59 Fleetwoods around. Johan did the original promo & kit in '59. X-EL re-popped them in the 80s. If you happen to be looking for one, you would be best advised to stay away from the original promo which of course is prone to warpage. If possible, find an original kit or the X-EL promo. They are made of styrene plastic and will not warp like the original promo. Steve

Yes I have. It is a promo, and being a '59 by Johan, my guess is that it is acetate. I don't believe they changed the plastic for the promos until around '62 or '63. Steve

That is sweet Al! That stock version '71 Cyclone is a real prize!! I would love to find one, but you rarely see them, and when you do, they cost a fortune as a rule. Nice addition to your stash! Steve

Model King '59 Imperial.
StevenGuthmiller replied to Custom Hearse's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I built one several years ago, & if it weren't for the fact that I have far too many other projects to build, I wouldn't mind taking a crack at another one. Although, I would much rather spend my effort & money to try to find a good '58 or '61 Imperial. Working on a '60 right now. Steve -
Getting started
StevenGuthmiller replied to Mark Pfaff's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If you honestly want to know what single thing changed my outlook on building more than anything else, it was polish. The most frustrating part of building in my early years was my difficulty in laying down a nice paint job. Dirt in the paint, orange peel, runs or sags, etc, were constantly showing their ugly heads. I am a firm believer that a beautiful paint job is the most important part of a successful build. You can detail until the cows come home, but if your paint job looks like colored sand paper, it's a failure no matter how you look at it. Now, with the help of good polishing technique, it has become apparent to me that nearly any paint faux pas can be repaired with polishing. Don't become too discouraged if your paint job doesn't immediately look like Pablo Picasso painted it. I rarely let a sub standard paint job concern me any more. With some clear coat & careful polishing, you can fix a whole myriad of issues. This knowledge that I don't need to strip a model 14 times before I get the finish that I desire has made my modeling career much more enjoyable. Steve -

What Did You Have for Dinner?
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
My son is the kitchen manager at a Texas Roadhouse about 80 miles from home. She goes to visit him about once a month, and he works constantly, so the only place that she can visit him is at work. Sometimes I accompany her, but today, she wanted to leave early so that she could return early. She left before I was off from work. Steve -

What Did You Have for Dinner?
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
If you come to my neck of the woods, I've got a lead on an old drive-in/ ice cream shop that's up for sale right on highway 10. The express way between Fargo ND and the Minnesota lakes country. I thought that it would be a great place for a good old fashioned, greasy spoon BBQ joint. The Fargo/Moorhead area doesn't really have a good BBQ joint that I know of. Steve -
AMT Junior And Craftsman Kits

I have built several "Junior Craftsman" kits. Steve -
I suppose that I should follow suit & post a photo. This was taken quite a few years ago shortly after my wife had her mid-life crisis, purchased her S-2000 & we took it on it's first road trip out west. Myself and my beautiful bride of now 31 years. And my 2 only slightly messed up children! Steve
