microwave-styrene experiment
Snake45 replied to STYRENE-SURFER's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I've successfully bent styrene rod by sticking it in boiling water for a few seconds. I forget how long it was, but it wasn't too long--experiment. When it comes out of the water, you have a few seconds to get it where you want it. Notice that with each heating/cooling cycle of styrene, it gets more brittle, and it'll want to shrink, too. If you can do it in one shot, it's best. -
Put me down for one '23 Ford, maybe one set of the Firestone tires, otherwise, yawn.....

There's a link at the top of the page to NHRA rulebooks of the years in question. They might be able to answer your question. Besides the class rules, check out the general tech and safety rules at the back of the books. I'm not sure that this car would have been built to any particular NHRA class rules, though. Many of these thing of that era weren't.

Very, VERY nice indeed! Might be the nicest VR I've seen built yet. Lotta interest in the '65 Riv on here lately. We've seen what, five, six, seven of 'em now in the last month or two? Fabulous! Well done and model on!

Sweet! What are you planning to do with it--restore it, rebuild it, modify it, or just enjoy it as is? I got one of these at a flea market last year, unpainted but not built as cleanly as yours. Been thinking lately of doing something with it. Last week on eBay I bought a fairly clean AMT '65 Impala convertible with the mild custom parts, and another one that might have everything I need to get at least a curbside stocker together. Might be fun to display the three of them together when I get 'em finished.

I wouldn't put the Testors One Coats in the "bass boat" category, most of them, anyway. They're a nice metalflake--maybe even less flaky than many of the beloved old Testor, Pactra, and AMT metalflakes of bygone years. I don't use them on serious stock builds, but I like them a lot for customs, rods, and even Day Two cars. If you want real bass boat flake, check out the Krylon Sparkle line. I've got several different colors of them and can't wait to use them on some dune buggies and wild '60s customs.

August Display: Musclecar Calendar Car: ’65 Malibu SS , dark blue or black with aftermarket Halibrand-ish wheels. Diecast Model: Maisto ’65 Malibu SS Pro Street, very dark blue with Cragar-ish wheels. Pretty darn close! Corvette Calendar Car: ’63 Coupe, gold, with wheel covers. Diecast Model: Well ’63 Coupe, red, with wheel covers. I matched everything but the color. Not bad.

Polish carefully. The paint seems to be pretty thin on these. NOTHING like, say, a diecast. I'm gonna polish mine, but won't go farther than looking for a "shiny factory orange peel" look, not a showcar shine.

Thanks for all the kind comments, everyone. I've already started on the gray fastback and hope to have it posted soon. It should come out MUCH better.

You wouldn't be interesting in swapping that annual kit body for a Funny Hugger body, would you? Prolly not, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Great story and a very nice model to go with it. Well done and model on!

They look nice. Where did you get them? Do they come in other colors?

It looks a lot like the chassis in the JoHan '68 AMX, which AMT sold as the '69. That's why I suggested that it might have originated there. Or this chassis might be a copy/clone of that. I don't have that chassis anymore, but I do have one in a JoHan '70 Olds. I'll see if I can find it and compare them.

Looks like a great project. I'll be following.

That's a pretty sharp looking Deuce! -
Very nice! The interior is particularly well done. Model on!

Cool project! If you think you can get it finished by the end of September, you might want to register it in the current round Bring Out Your Dead Completion Build, as it certainly looks like a candidate. We'd love to have you!

Yah all that, but is it possible AMT bought the short Logghe frame molds from JoHan? I don't recall JoHan using that (short) chassis again after the AMX. Come to think of it, when was the last time JoHan used the first-gen Logghe chassis in ANY kit? I know it was in the '70 4-4-2 (112" wheelbase); was it used after that? (Interestingly, the '70 4-4-2 was also sold in AMT boxes. I know--I actually have one.)
