Best 60s Ford Mustang Kit?

He's talking about the "Mustang III," a completely different car. Click his link to see what he's talking about. -
1/25 AMT '65 Chevy El Camino "Gear Hustler"

Do you mean the late-'70s "Countdown" series? I have an unbuilt copy of that in the Snakepit but was unable to locate it today to check. It runs in my mind it has the small cap like the new reissue, but I could be wrong. I'm certain it doesn't have the BIG one. -

First I've heard of this, but I don't doubt it. I've seen one that seems to fit the rear bumper fairly well, but most of the reissues the body is MUCH narrower than the bumper and it hangs over on both sides. I'm working on another former glue bomb, probably an '80s issue (I'm converting it to a '71) that's molded in a gold color, or about the color of "brown" mustard. The blue-painted glue bomb I just "rescued," it was molded in red and the rear bumper overhangs a little on each side, but not as badly as on a couple of molded-in-white reissues I have.

I don't think you'd have much trouble opening up the lower ones, perhaps by filing or Dremeling away from the backside. Those top slits are THIN. On the white one I recently completed, I ended up just doing them with a black gel pen, which was quick and easy but of course not 100% perfect. Maybe think about getting some water-based acrylic flat black, thin it quite a bit, and flow it into those vents. Might take a couple coats. Overage can be cleaned up with water--don't use anything that would require alcohol cleanup as it will take that Testor lacquer right off.

The wrong "Actor" for the part.....
Snake45 replied to Dann Tier's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hyde was an amalgamation of several of my friends. My group didn't have a Kelso but I can think of at least one guy in our class who qualifies. I WISH I'd had a Hot Donna living next door. -
'70 buckets are not the same as '72-'74 buckets, though they are a lot better/closer than what comes in the '74 kit. It might work.

I remember him getting a Monogram 1/48 B-17 (or maybe it was a B-24), which was around in the mid/late '70s, but it was definitely in a much newer box, not the proper original '70s box. (They should have asked me. I could have fixed them right up.) BTW, That '70s Show is definitely on my All Time Favorite/Best Sitcoms list, probably coming in somewhere between #5 and #7. I graduated HS in 1972 but I could definitely relate to just about everything in it. As a matter of fact, I was Eric. And I grew up to become Red. And I am not kidding at all. -

VERY nice! You did a great job on this ancient kit, and it looks the part. Well done and model on! -
Best 60s Ford Mustang Kit?

Ah, some useful information we can work with! Either the Revellogram 1/24-1/25 family or the AMT '66 coupe will work fine for you, since you're going to be scratchbuilding most of the top anyway. If it MUST have the '65 type grille, you'll have to track down one of the Revellogram '64 or '65 non-Shelby kits, as the grille in the AMT is a '66. Refer to my earlier comments about the chassis/mechanicals detailing on the AMT '66. The body's quite nice; the chassis not so much. But that might not be important to you (it's not to me, but it is to some). Good luck with this project, and do keep us posted--it sounds cool and fun! -

The hard hats and six pack are on the tree with the engine parts, and one side of the camper top. -
Am I the only person who's noticed that the Schwimmwagen seems to have been the inspiration for the body shape of the Meyers Manx (more or less)? Hmmm, maybe I'll do one of my AMT Manxes in WWII German three-color camo, just for grins.

IMHO your biggest problem will be fixing the awful looking headlight "buckets" on the AMT '74 body. I've had one of these stalled for years trying to remedy this problem. I hear rumors from time to time that someone has or is working on a corrected resin grille for this kit, but I haven't so far been able to actually find one. At a recent local car show, I took a LOT of pics of this area on a couple different '72-'74 Cudas, so at least I have good reference material to work with. The pic AFX posted above also shows the affected area pretty well. Good luck with your project!

1/25 AMT '65 Chevy El Camino "Gear Hustler"
Snake45 replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I suppose you could. Wheelbases were identical in so it should theoretically fit. (You could also use the chassis from the Revell '65 Chevelle.) You'd also have to cut the underhood sheet metal out of the '66 body and glue it into the '65 body, as the AMT kit has the fenderwells etc on the chassis. -

We could use more details of exactly what you want to do. In the meantime, if 1/24 will work for you, and you're talking about a '65-'66, the Monogram/Revell family is probably the "best." These have appeared in numerous iterations including various Shelbys and the pace car convertible. (Did they ever do a straight hardtop? I don't think so but I don't remember.) If you must have 1/25, the AMT is the only game in town. It's lacking in mechanical detail, but the body and related body parts are actually pretty nice--better IMHO than a couple of highly regarded recent Revell offerings. If you can move up to '67-'68, a couple more options become available. -

1/25 AMT '65 Chevy El Camino "Gear Hustler"

There was some discussion in another thread about what is and isn't in this new reissue so I dug out the one I bought last week and opened it up to see. Near as I can tell, all stock parts are still here. The custom grille, console, dual carb intake and air cleaners and "headers" are still on the chrome tree, as are the nice deep dish Cragars. A second small chrome tree has some nice chrome reverse wheels, also deep. I never have enough of these! (Didn't check close but I assume the non-chrome custom front end parts are still here too.) Glass--including the headlights--is included in both clear and blue. (Anyone doing a Sox & Martin '71 Cuda?) Might be cool to build the Elky with clear glass but the blue glass in the camper. Tires are four pad-printed Polyglas GTs, and (no slicks but) two enormous snow or maybe all-terrain off road tires I've never seen before (I don't buy any trucks, so maybe they've been around). I've got a couple models where I could really use some LARGE street tires so these are very welcome. Even though I already own at least two, maybe three previous reissues of this kit, I don't consider my purchase money wasted, especially at Hobby Lobby 40% off price. I might even buy another one. -
I've built two of those (coupes, not the convertible). LOVELY kit except for the fit of the front valence panel, which is a little too wide and needs to be narrowed to fit. Otherwise, just a joy to build and display.

Okay, I just took a detailed look at mine and while at first glance they look nearly identical, they are NOT the same. Both of yours seem to have four screw mounts on the chassis for screwing it to a base. My Riv and TA don't have these. My Rivs are Maistos, and while they look VERY similar to yours, mine have vinyl tops molded in and yours obviously doesn't. So they're two different models. My "Wild Cherries" (there is no maker's name on the chassis) '73 TA doesn't have separate exhaust pipes coming out under the bumper. And the grille on your Welly looks just a little more correctly shaped than mine, though the rest of the body looks, again, VERY similar. (Mine's painted a bright, bright red and has Torq-Thrust-"ish" wheels, not the Pontiac Rally IIs of yours.) So the Motor Maxes are different models from what I have, but the differences are so slight that I'm not gonna worry about "upgrading." Thanks for posting the great pics, BTW. Very helpful!

BTW, here's couple pics of my silver '65 Riv. I don't have pics yet of the blue one, but it looks just the same except the paint is a nice grayish-blue metallic. I had to remove the front bumper of this one to get the headlight pods to fit better, but the fit on the blue one was fine.

I have one that came prepainted (or just molded?) in a bright green (Sassy Grass Green?) that I hope to Snake-slap together sometime soon, just to get the oversized box out of the pile.

Fabulous! I'd have never guessed. You did a GREAT job on the polish, and that's coming from someone who's polished a LOT of plastic. Drive on!

Putting yellowed old decals in a window with sun exposure will usually bleach the yellow out. I've never tried it with applied decals on a model, but it MIGHT work. Just make sure the room where you're doing this is cool--might not even be a bad idea to set up a fan to blow on the model as it's sitting in the sun for the several days it will take. (Better safe than sorry.) Or it might work to set the model on a porch or patio outdoors in direct sunlight, if you have a place where it won't be stolen or blown over or damaged by neighborhood squirrels, cats, birds, etc. (Got something like an old hamster or bird cage you could put over it.)
