Ferrari Porsche rival cars of sorts
djflyer replied to aurfalien's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My counterpoint to the 928 was the 400i but i dont know of any kit or diecast of it in 24th scale (or close to it). The closest Porsche I can think of to the 550 was likely the 996 Turbo -
wow, that's fantastic. Does that have a part number or name and what scale is it?
-
The closest thing I have found (so far) is the Revell kit of the M3 DTM 2012. Its the only kit I know of that has the BMW V8, but you will have to modify it depending on how much detail you want (the DTM car is naturally aspirated while the M6 GT3 runs turbos). I hope Revell doesnt give up on Sports/GT race cars as they seem to be the only kit mfg interested in providing drivelines.
-
Rastar does the same thing - r/c and non r/c plastic bodies in 24th scale. I have their Ferrari FF and Range Rover Evoque
-
WOW. Glad I got mine before someone decided they were made of gold (or silver in this case).

I think the Gunze kit of the 928 is the only one with a complete driveline, but some of the more recent Fujimi kits weren't too bad. No replicas of the 400 that I know of - kinda put that in there without thinking about it. Almost forgot - Porsche Panamera v. Ferrari FF/GTC4 Lusso -
I dont mind the ads at the top and bottom of the page, but the ones that insert between posts get a bit annoying, especially when they're totally unrelated to anything I have interest in or need for. (would be curious to know why the google bot thinks I need a divorce atty seeing as I havent been married in years) What would be more appreciated is ads for hobby related vendors and sites - kit manufacturers, retailers, even links to social media streams would be great. We're the people they need to sell to, and I'm always looking for new sources so add 'em if you can.

I might consider the Enzo more of the counterpart to the Carrera GT (closer timeline) How about Porsche 928 v. Ferrari 400, or Porsche 930 Turbo v. Ferrari 365 GT/BB -
Actually they came from the Fujimi Borrani 15" wire wheel set. The box art is very deceiving as the tires you get are actually Michelin XWX and no where near as wide as it shows (the sidewall actually says 215/70-15)

These are the Fujimi 15" Borrani wire wheels with their Michelin tire mounted. Not as good as the FPPM's for sure, but definitely better than the kit.

Best airbrush paint?
djflyer replied to Dragonhawk1066's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
So far I have been following their recommended mix ratio, which is still a bit thicker than you might be used to but it seems to work. Again, I used only their thinner and poly rather than some outside stuff that "should work". Spraying at less than 20 psi and light wet coats seem to be the key. Make sure your airbrush is clean when you start and prime it with a couple drops of their thinner before putting the paint through. Proper mixing seem also seems to be crucial which is true with all acrylics. One trick I want to try for all of them is the "paint roller mixer" I saw on youtube where a guy took a rubber tip for a chair leg, drilled a hole in the bottom, and put a long bolt through and tightened it down with nuts and washers. Then chuck it up in a drill and turn at lowest speed. A one-inch supposedly fits the 17ml bottle size perfect and there are larger sizes. -
leveler for 3D printed bodies
djflyer replied to misterNNL's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
One method that I have used that works very well on SLS printed bodies is using the ultra-thin super glue. The bodies are porous so spread a very thin layer on and let it soak in. After an hour or so you can sand smooth, then prime and paint as normal. -

One thing that you have to decide is the type of paint you want to use - acrylic, lacquer, or enamel as each has its own needs for airbrushing. The last two have been around forever and have some definite strengths and a few weaknesses. Acrylic has been getting alot of attention in recent years and some very good formulas have come out. Because of my living situation I've been switching over to acrylics and have found a couple that I like. Acrylic does call for a different application method then the solvent based paints but its not too hard to get. The Badger Stynylrez is a great primer, comes in several shades and sprays very easy out of the bottle (for me). Vallejo acrylics and Gunze Mr.Color have both been good, and just starting to try Mission Models with some success. One thing I have been doing, at least to start, is to use the same manufacturer's thinners/reducers/etc with their own paints. You can supposedly mix and match but I wanted to eliminate that as a variable. -
If not those then HRM has a very nice set of Borrani wires, and then there's the 3D printed ones from Model Builders Warehouse that are fantastic.
-
Its great to see one of these getting built - I may have to get going on mine (as well as the GTB I finally acquired). Am planning to use the excellent Borrani alloy wheels and tires from HRM on the coupe - not sure about the Spyder, but you're right - those tires gotta go. I really liked this color combination on the link posted by DukeE

Modeler's 1/24 Porsche 962 info?
djflyer replied to aurfalien's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Heres some pics of the BRM slot car body. I bought mine pre-decorated (you can get them as a plain white body also) but for around $20 you can get get something really nice and strip it and add what ever decals you want. Side by side with the Tamiya body (Shell 962C kit). You can see the deeper rad inlets on the BRM body Side view showing the "big hump" intake and other inlets. The Tamiya chassis pops into the BRM body (right) but supposedly needs correction for IMSA spec cars The BRM interior detail set (which they sell separately) in the Tamiya chassis -

There's also this conversion from Calvin Sallee at Hobbitime. Its designed for the Hasegawa or Revell kits. His site also has a blog on how to build the conversion. https://hobbitime.myshopify.com/products/1-24-porsche-962-imsa-resin-turbo-hump-conversion-type-2-for-hasegawa-revell-kits-gtp -
From your post in the "What Did You Get..." I was thinking the MM ZR1 looked a little oversize, but not so much from these pics. What do they scale out as?

Modeler's 1/24 Porsche 962 info?
djflyer replied to aurfalien's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Wow, thats definitely some exhaustive and detailed comparison work. I would love to see an update. Great information though as I have had a few 962 projects on the back burner while gathering parts. I do have the LMM Gold line kit of the 962 that I acquired for a great deal less than list price, but it was still expensive. Great kit and extremely well detailed, but still not an IMSA 962. One thing you might look for is the BRM line of slot car bodies. They make some very nice molded plastic bodies in 24th scale that you can get pre-painted or in white. I have the Lowenbrau decorated car body and it fits right on the Tamiya chassis with very little work. Havent compared it yet to the details listed in your linked site, but it looks good having both the deeper rad inlets and "big hump" intake. You can find them at Pendlesslotracing.co.uk and 132slotcar.us. -
Fantastic work - also cant believe this is 24th scale. Please let this be available for purchase - I have several projects just waiting for something like this!!!

What Cars Do You Like Every Year Of?
djflyer replied to JollySipper's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Mustang II's can be good, some are really good (like the Evolution II below) They kind of get looked down upon as not being "real" Mustangs - kinda like the Porsche 914/924/944 not being "real" Porsches. Its just too bad they came along at a low point in American car performance.
