What Cars Do You Like Every Year Of?
djflyer replied to JollySipper's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Tough question when you think about every iteration of some cars and the ways some manufacturers try to resurrect name plates (as Steven G has pointed out). If you like the VW Beetle, does that include the New Beetle and not just the Type 1, or Mustang fans get the Mustang II as well? The only one for me so far is the Lotus Esprit. Produced from 1976 to 2004 in two basic body styles with various mods and upgrades. Both stand out in the world of two-seat, mid-engine sports cars. -
Interior side panels for Hasegawa BMW 2002
djflyer replied to GeeBee's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Those look great and am glad USCP decided to do them. Its kinda sad though that a kit from a major mfg like Hasegawa needed something like this. Lack of a complete engine bay is bad enough but to be missing that much in the interior makes you wonder. Not like that kit was a cheap snapper and they've done three different releases from the same basic tooling (so far). -
I was just looking at his site for another post - Ron Olson on Shapeways (3D Model Specialties) has Powerglides with your choice of long or short tailshafts. I think you can get a set of three for around $11.00. (Shapeways goofy pricing makes it cheaper to have a multi-piece set than a single piece).

I have purchased several of his pieces for various projects but nothing to show yet. His stuff does look very good. He did have a facebook page where people were posting their build with his stuff and it looked really good, but the page is gone now. You can get a lot of his things in both 24th and 25th scale (and even larger). I have the BBC transaxle (can you say CanAm?) in both scales and there really is a difference. Ron just posted on his personal page that he's working on a Hellcat motor to fill a void from one of the resin casters. Am guessing a few people will want one.

Ron Olson, who's site on Shapeways is 3D Model Specialties has two-, three-, and four rotor Wankels with various intake sets: https://www.shapeways.com/product/4HYXEZRLR/rotary-20b-1-25?optionId=63196071

What did you see on the road today?
djflyer replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I guess the only explanation is someone had alot of extra steel tube laying around. This thing was running around my neighborhood and it was LOUD - check the open exhausts: -
I was glad to see this build brought up again, else I might have missed it. Has anyone built the MPC kit - I dont think its related but maybe I'm wrong - and what is your take on it?. I have this one in the stash that looks to have been started years ago but the clear parts are in GREAT shape.

Autokits Lotus and Ferrari Trading Places ...
djflyer replied to absmiami's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This will be very a very interesting build to watch as I have both the SE Finecast and Fernando Pinto kits of the Ferrari 156 in my stash It will be great to see what detail you bring to this one. -
Some of the shots I took at the Roar in 2018 do look more of a matte finish, but it certainly looks like they shined it up a bit for the race. I picked a few of the chassis shots for anyone that's interested.

Big news!! Scale Motorsport has new product!
djflyer replied to Pete J.'s topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Definitely looking forward to seeing this one but no doubt it will be pricey. It will be interesting to see what they decide to include..... -
Looking forward to seeing this build as well seeing as I have a few planned myself. The colors look great but one advisory I would say is the finish really isnt flat but does have some gloss to it. Shot this at night at Daytona 2018 and you can see the sheen under the lights. I dont know if you're planning to add extra detail but I have shots with the body work removed.

Fantastic build of a classic old race car. The added details are above and beyond. It sure makes me hope we will see Fisher re-build in the future.

Austin-Healy 100-6 or 3000? Any good kits?
djflyer replied to randyc's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
This is another one of those cars that is (almost) painfully underserved in the model world, especially considering its rather iconic status in sports cars - both the 100-6 and the 3000. One of these days I will have to pop for that K&R kit of the 3000. -

Not sure if you have a tight budget but there is also the K&R Replicas white metal kit of the 3000 in 24th scale. http://www.kandrreplicas.co.uk/kar2424.htm -
Interesting. It appears from the box that the rest were all going to be 24th scale. Guess I'll have to get the Marui kit if I want that scale. (Cant start building 20th scale now)

The back of the Revell Toyota F1 box showing the releases for the series was maybe the most intriguing. Am very curious if the Ferrari 312T was ever issued.

Recently acquired birthday presents to myself were some additions to the 24th scale F1 collection. Three were built-ups of Marui kits - broken and dusty, but still complete - a McLaren M23, a Tyrrell-Ford 007, and a BRM P160 (which I never knew existed) The fourth was an unbuilt Revell Toyota TF102 The two Ford-engine cars likely will get Heller-based drivelines, but the BRM V12 will take some work. That and decals for all three. Not sure if the McLaren will get back-dated to the earlier style airbox and Yardley colors, or updated to the dog-ears lower height airbox.

There was an article in the old Road & Track Exotic Cars Quarterly that if I recall said BMW decided not to develop the project further while ItalDesign was still considering producing the car, hence the BMW-style grille went away. Definitely too bad as that would still be one of the most gorgeous cars on the road.

Eliminating 3d print lines on small parts
djflyer replied to Codi's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Great tip - I will have to try this with the small parts I have waiting for some method of clean-up One thing I have tried that works for pieces the size of car bodies is to seal it. I first do a rough sanding the knock down any major flaws then spread on a thin coat of superglue. I let that dry until no longer tacky but no more than a couple hours. Then sand with finer grit like a 400 or 600 - then prime and paint as usual. So far it hasnt mattered which brand I use, only that its the thinnest formula possible. This works best on pieces printed in what I believe is called SLS as the powdered nylon bodies are somewhat porous. I know that Smooth-On makes a sealer for this purpose but have never tried it. -
I recently acquired one of these kits for a reasonable price so was glad to see the outstanding results of your build. The color and paintwork is fantastic. HRM (Historic Racing Miniatures) makes two great sets of wheels and tires for this car - the 10-hole Boranni alloy wheels or a nice set of 3-piece wire wheels. They come with resin tires that have great tread and are much more to scale.

I know you already have the GTC kit, but would their 500 Superfast or 330 GT 2+2 get you closer to the rear bodywork?
-
What I am seeing mostly (especially when you look at the nose) is a 365 California with a roofline similar to the Dino coupe. Unfortunately I dont recall there ever being a kit of the 365.
