Moebius - Now that the Comet is out, What's Next
Cpt Tuttle replied to Swifster's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Now, with all those suggestions, I would really like a boattail Riviera, it is such a shame that a both popular and gorgeous car like that one is so impossible to get in styrene.... -
Since nobody will be happy to see this lying in a cabinet at my place, and they are made to be built, I start on it! I'm a builder and not a collector. I read somewhere that the factory made only some cars for exhibitions with black engines. Most restorers go for that alternative but the standard colour of the engine was green. I have no idea how correct that is, but I just guess now that it was and choose to paint it that way. I don't like painting fenders on vintage cars, there's always somewhere the paint doesn't cover and then when you cover it, you get a thick coat of paint somewhere else.....but now it is done. Got some orange peel but I will try to polish that when the paint has cured. The engine. Nothing special. Painted some of the chrome parts with aluminium paint since they did have a quite raw cast finish from the factory and chrome looks wrong. However, I kept the chrome on the valve cover since there's not impossible that it could have been polished.... Added plug wires, not much more, but for a kit released in 1964, the engine is quite detailed anyway.

If it's anything like the 59 Impala kit, it is probably great, since that is one of the best kits I've built....
-
Promising, great detailwork.
-
Wow, that's a lowrider interior if anything.

Yes, northern Sweden is north enough to get midnight sun, but that's in the summer and not now.... I live only kilometers south of the arctic circle, so....
-
Not midnight....is it called 12 PM in the day? Was a bit unsure myself....
-
Just sunlight coming into the window on the southside at 12 AM

Not my best build, but at least I got the style right and it looks better on the shelf than in a cardboard box.
-
I think you can swap the front splash pan/bumper assembly for the parts from the 56 Del Rey which is more correct.

Sounds like a fun car, no chance you have any pics? Painted the body in Mercedes Benz "Astralsilber" and it turned out OK. Silver will seldom get any depth so I doubt I will polish it, a little wax will do. Dashboard, I don't know if it should be upholstered or not but since this is not a stocker, I did so anyway, looks more exclusive. Also I found a fitting steering wheel in the parts box, and fitted it with a wolfsburg badge on the horn button. Some detailwork on the rest of the interior Close to final assembly now.....totally dechromed, only black trim. A not too good picture from behind...

I put the Starliner chassis, engine and interior in my 64 Galaxie build to get a better level of detailing, worked out perfect.

Frog made a 1:24 Mercedes SSK, though the tooling was inherited from Sankyo, which in turn was a ripoff of the Lindberg SSK. The Lindberg kit had an engine IIRC, the Sankyo kit didn't, it was motorized and had the battery box under the hood. Frog did not include a motor or batteries though, so on the model, you can open the hood and find.....a gaping hole.

I live only kilometers from the finnish border so I know how it is and it looks convincing to me. I remember that color being popular on cars in the early 70s in Finland....
-
Where did you get the body? A friend of mine had a 75 Charger some years ago and I would love to build a replica of it for her someday....
-
I think I could look for hours at the detailing....very good work.
-
I really can't say that I am an expert on the subject, but it looks convincing!

Nice jalopies, especially the T. I have a weak spot for 4 bangers.
-
Not one of mine either, I think both the 348, 355 and 360 lacks some of the soul that the 308/328 had...... But nothing wrong with the build at all!
-
A bit off in scale maybe? Slick little piece of eyecandy anyway!

No doubt that you really nailed the look of an old, thin paintwork with sandblasted spots, I'm really impressed!
-
I can only say that I'm impressed, a very different take on this kit and it really works amazing, nice and clean work too, great!
