New Car Quiz from Americantorque
TarheelRick replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
73% I think I will try it again to see if I can do any better. Well they do allow retakes in school. -
Dune Buggy Aftermarket Engine Kits?
TarheelRick replied to BDSchindler's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
A chrome turbocharged Corvair is also available in the Competition Parts Kit, which includes a Hemi, a SBC, a Pontiac, and an Allison V-12, plus a T-bucket body to build an altered drag car. They are still available but are beginning to gain the "collectors" price tag. -
1953 Chevy Gasser "White Lightning"
TarheelRick replied to roadhawg's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Beautiful Gasser. I am amazed by the accuracy of your decal work. How did you get the gold on the "Tattoo" decal? -
Very interesting build. The weathering is superb and your scratchbuilding skills are outstanding. I saw one of these recently on the Discovery Channel's "Mountain Men". Eustice, who lives in the North Carolina mountains built a similar contraption to power his pick-up. Amazingly it did work. Keep those updates coming.

Hmmm, I may need to move there, looks like my kind of town, hot rods everywhere. Really clean work.

Or maybe to "loosen" him up a bit.

My last '16 build. AMT '40 Ford vintage box art
TarheelRick replied to FordRodnKustom's topic in Model Cars
Can't add much more than what has already been said. Really does capture the look of the box art. I built an original of this kit back when it actually was an original issue. Loved it then and now have another repop in my stash to build when I get to it. Nice job and that B&W display is beautiful. -
I picked up two of the Lindberg '54 Ford Hardtops in my local Cracker Barrel many years ago. Back in the late 90's when I got back into the hobby I found an opened JOHAN Boss Hoss F/C at a pet store. When I was a kid and first got into kits I used to buy from Griffith's Stationary Store, Roses, Ben Franklin's, Western Auto, and Kennedy's Auto and Hardware Store, all in the small town close to where I lived; unfortunately they are all gone now, as is most of the town. Most recently I picked up two Academy Hyundai Grandeur/Azeras at a Korean style big-box store in Pusan, Republic of Korea.

What he said and including the flat-tow towbar hooks on the front end. No trailer for this baby, just hook her up to the pickup/wagon/sedan and go racing. I love the overall look of this build.

10th Annual Hope it Don't Snow Show & Contest
TarheelRick replied to Drgon63's topic in Contests and Shows
Really sorry I missed it. I used to attend every year when I lived in Rutherfordton, NC, was much closer then. Now it is too far to drive. -
Very well done. Especially like the military theme, although would have preferred a USAF approach since I am retired Air Force, but I guess the USMC will suffice.

I have always loved the first gen Roadrunners. They just look fast, even sitting still (or rusting away in a salvage yard). This one is beautiful, like your attention to detail and the change to the hood. If I may ask, whatever happened to the 1:1 - do you still have it? My first real car was a '65 SS Chevelle and it is long gone.

Really sweet Comet, especially like the engine swap. I have a couple of the Mustang kits, minus bodies, I scored from Ebay. This build has got me midn working on how to use those parts. Did you do any chassis modifications?

1963 Pontiac Bonneville Hard Top. Update, 3/25
TarheelRick replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I really love this year Pontiac. Sure wish Round2 could find the mold and reissue the hardtop version of it. Looking forward to your finished build. -
Meng Ford F-350 1/24
TarheelRick replied to weirich1's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Beautiful FORD truck, but then like Mustangs, ALL FORD trucks are beautiful. Anyway I really like the way your changes have improved the overall aggressive look of this build. You might want to consider parking it on top of that Corvette - sort of like a speed bump. -
This is some really beautiful work. One of my favorite parts of modeling is watching someone else change body styles. Looking forward to your preogess.

Modelling Oddities/Mistakes
TarheelRick replied to NY Modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There is pretty much the same issue with the Revell '65 Chevelle Malibu. It is supposed to be an SS, but it does not have the SS rear fascia, only the plain Jane Malibu. -
One of my favorites is the #1 step of any new small appliance or anything else that comes in a box. #1. Open box. Well duh, the instructions are inside the box, how am I supposed to know to open the box? My second favorite is the list of side-effects on medicines: "May cause diarrhea. May cause constipation" or the ever popular "May cause drowsiness" on a box of sleeping aides.

Lifting revel 1997 Ford F-150 2wd
TarheelRick replied to Jonrdp's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
You may have to resort to scratchbuilding some pieces for this lift. This will probably netial building longer mount brackets for the ends of the A-arms, making longer springs and spindles, and of course longer, beefier shocks. I would suggest going to some websites that offer 1:1 lift kits and see what the pieces look like. Hope this helps. -
1950 back40 beater
TarheelRick replied to dieseldawg142's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Beautiful build. Really like the way you transformed it into a 4X4. What did you use for axles? That camper is just beyond words; totally outstanding work on this one. -
Sure makes me miss my '65 SS. Like the build, as others have said, not really crazy about the size of the wheels. What is that color? Too bad Revell didn't include the SS rear fascia on this model.

Modelling Oddities/Mistakes
TarheelRick replied to NY Modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Don't remember Plymouth making a Duster with a Dodge grille. It's hard to see on the box top, but it does say Dodge. -
Actually, that was my intended question. How could a Hemi powered E Body run in SS/DA? That has got to be one of the lightest, highest horsepower combinations available.
-
Really enjoy these type builds, 60's - 70's Superstocks, ProStocks were my favorite racers, well I really dug the Gassers, but they were phasing out in the early 70's. However, there is one thing I have never understood. How could a Hemi-powered Cuda or Challenger be classified as D/SA? What would have run in A/SA?
