Testors (Gunze Sangyo) Lamborghini Spelling Bee Special (Silhouette)
89AKurt replied to 89AKurt's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Finished this lump tonight! ? Last night I used Studio 27 seat belt material and buckle to finish the interior. The scale kit box is the final touch. Brush painted the window trim. Since I wasn't happy with the paint job, weathered like it's been driven in the rain. Pen was used to do the emblems. For anyone who will build this, the top needs some thinning down on the tabs so it will sit flush. Fresh on the bench pictures: Started December 17 with the goal to finish before year's end, but due to the struggle with the paint, it was put into a dark corner. Spent only 59.25 hours, but about 15-20 hours was redoing the paint. Since I spent time with this, thought it was amusing how boring the design is, can understand why it didn't sell well, but now it's collectible since so few were built. The real thing looks pretty, but the model misses some proportions in the window area. The tires are totally wrong, high aspect ratio and same width front and back, which gives this a clunky look, which makes the phone dial wheels look out of proportion. The steering wheel linked to the front wheels, and lights, are a corny gimmick. The Countach changed Lamborghini's fortunes, so having this for a historic benchmark was worth the effort.- 46 replies

Testors (Gunze Sangyo) Lamborghini Spelling Bee Special (Silhouette)

Since this kit showed lights, and I had the bulbs, installed on the bumper part. Aluminum plate to securely hold the wires, aluminum duct tape around the bulb. Used the stained glass soldering iron. Can't believe it works! It's stupid that only the front turn signals get lit, not the driving lights below, but it is what it is. Discovered a pet peeve, giant gap to see through the car. Black paper is put in the wheel well. There was a little gap still, that was filled with Tacky glue (after taking the picture). Had to put the Lambo emblem on. Mirror "glass" is done. The windshield has some blemishes, which would have required fixing, if this was going to be a masterpiece. Just need to paint the window trim, and emblems, glue on the wipers, then weather with grim and bug splats.- 46 replies

Never saw this kit when I started model building, missed out. Anyway, this isn't turning out to be a good example. Didn't want to jinx this build until I got over the hump. It's turned out to be one of the worst jobs for a long time. Stripped twice, so the body ended up getting trashed. I'm just an old fart who is having trouble learning to use this exotic paint from Splash. So #3 was Tamiya primer over the wet-sanded previous coats of the same. Since I got the Splash surfacer, tried it, sprayed quick and thin coats, just so I wouldn't melt the surface. The nice thing about this paint, it cures really quick! Did a quick wet-sand before doing the Splash Lambo purple which was intended for a Huracan. The first coat was too orange peeled, so wet-sanded, and added thinner (illegal in CA) for the second time. Then I did 3 coats of the Splash 1K clear, quick wet-sand after each coat, and more thinner each time. Resisted the urge to go slow and let a thick wet coat lay down, because that always ruined it before. Anyway, at least I didn't totally wreck it this time. IMO Paying good money for paint, it should go on without having to wet-sand. The problem with this body, has a bunch of character creases that beg for getting screwed up. Even the carbon-fiber decal did something weird. Not at all happy with this. ? But forging ahead, just because. Got some details on the body done tonight. The paint on the back bumpers came out great.- 46 replies

Favorite Online Model Store?
89AKurt replied to chasracer's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This depends on your favorite subject. I prefer foreign vehicles, so Spot Model has been good for me. I have found some scarce models on the various Facebook Marketplace groups. And I have acquired a few off eBay. As Tony already mentioned, HobbyLink is very good, but how is the status of mail shutdown because of CV-1984 doing? -

Welcome! Familiar story. I have completed, but have more of what my dad owned, and a couple of my cars too on the long list. Be well and proliferate. -
Better than mine, which still sits in the box! Sharp looking model.

Not another kit, but scratch-building parts. Had to get the bumper stickers. ? Was curious what scraps K&S throws together, I'm sure each package is different.

Saying this is killer does not do it justice. Did you use a jig to glue up the body panels?

Guess this will leave out some gentlemen. I can think of David Cummins, who was a Chrysler executive, won top awards at GSL, but he only owned some Ferraris, so that wouldn't count. Haracio Pagani sure isn't on this forum, a video showing his factory shows models he built as a kid, now he builds killer exotic cars, not hot rods, so he wouldn't count. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing famous guys who build (built) any models, and own nice cars, any type of cars.

Awesome that some youngsters are building and entering a contest! They did a good job too. I entered in the County Fair for years, before my first legitimate model contest. Last century, contests gave out a model just for entering. Remember the Copper State Model Car Championship? It was '91 or '92 that I picked a Corvette, which got kit-bashed with a '39 Chevy. I didn't get any award that first show. Might get more youngsters entering if a model was part of the deal.

I know that I've seen lead foil sheets, maybe it was on Amazon. What I found on eBay is very thin. Some of the lead foil tape prices seem a bit steep, I guess stained glass will be a lost art now. I thought maybe removing the adhesive would make nice belts.- 24 replies

Making Detail Master DM 2260 Racing Harness with paper

I love some wine bottle foil! There is a real lead metal that is ideal. The plastic coated is not that great, at least for this purpose. I've seen sheets on eBay, tempted. Thank you everyone for the comments.- 24 replies

Thanks! Shakesbeer wrote, brevity is the soul of wit. ? Merci pour le commentaire aimable. ? Appreciate that! Thanks! Not my idea, was inspired by someone else who dared to spend a fortune. Thank you my friend. Always enjoy your WIP. It was a I-have-to-do-this for a long time, thank you. Thanks! Not bad for common (whoops, been discontinued, what the heck am I going to do?) Testors yellow with Model Master pearl clear. ?
