This was inspired by an artist Ken Eberts ad in Mobilia magazine July 1993, pg. 17 that I picked up at one of the White Mountain model shows. Soon as I saw it, I knew it would be a killer diorama subject. From the ad: "California Pit Stop" by Ken Eberts was awarded the highest honor at the 1992 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance AFAS Exhibition... Featuring a red 1959 Ferrari California Spyder at a Texaco Station of Rt. 66 in the California desert in 1959, a local character draws his own conclusions as the car's owner makes a "pit stop." ... The main character is the Italeri 250 GT California Spyder, which has some Miniatures of Maryland detail parts for the interior, and several scratch-built things. The old man is a Fujimi mechanics figure that is heavily modified with epoxy putty and wine bottle foil. The Ford pickup is Monogram's great kit, just added some cargo. I added the AMT Chevy pickup for obvious reasons. Most of the gas station parts came from Detail Resources, who went out of business, so lucky I ordered all that when I did (lesson learned, get it now, don't wait!). I scratch-built the oil can rack from cardboard. The building is made from thin construction plywood, and ripped alder for rafters, doors, trim, curb etc. A few posters are copied from the original painting, but signs were found online and Photo Shop used to enhance and scale to size. The background is oil painted to match the painting. I also made a mount for shows, to have his painting above. I figured out the artist took artistic license to force perspective. I need to replicate a gas pump for a base, and make a glass cover, because it's 2 ft. x 3 ft., and the cats would wreck it if in the house.

David: From what I can tell, I would scribe between arms and body for a start, and clothes edges. Agree with realism, a pet peeve of mine is shiny clothing. Ron: Thanks for your input too. I didn't see many 1/24 scale cars, a couple of Hudsons, but if they are anything like the rendering, looks like lots of block sanding.

Thank you very much for the detailed response! I have a concept involving two boys who got into trouble, this has been the spark to move forward. The process you explained for modifying a figure, is that why there seems to be repeats when scanning the 90+ pages? Regarding glue, good to know, guess drill and wire pins with epoxy is an alternative? Mike999: I saw those Masterbox female figures on HobbyLink, most of them out-of-stock at the time. Some of the offerings from Shapeways would .... uh ..... spice up a display.

I stumbled upon the site for Shapeways, which seems to have hundreds of figures. I was scrolling through the 1/24 scale figurines, see some .... uh ..... figures .... wow .... don't let your wife see them. Otherwise, they also have dogs, and guns. I was looking for children, and some are available are stiff poses, but I could go from there. Anyone have experience with their nylon, flexible, material? How is it to work with, compared to resin? Does the real thing look like the computer illustration?

I searched for Shapeway figures before starting a thread, so would appreciate your input regarding their product. This is a very ambitious project, more power to you sir!

That is my new favorite source, been asking the customer representative. Thanks! -
Last century I built the green road race version of this kit. It's really nice. Good for you on the engine!

Cool, another rally fan! If I didn't have so many other subjects, would get this too. Watching..... Tires, any idea about Michelin gravel tires? I just got an Audi S1, which has slicks, 17". -
Thanks again. Yea, I kinda messed it up, and then ....

Thank you! Forget exactly what that can is, but whatever I recently picked up for recycling was it. I simply drew with a 0.3mm pencil, after doing some research on tats. I have several colors for skin, mixed, darker where there would be shadow.

This was inspired by a t-shirt, and Arizona's Stupid Driver law that is supposed to deter idiots from crossing flooded washes, by forcing them to pay for recovery costs. The roof is from my Honey, We Have A Problem diorama, the Tamiya - Isuzu Vehicross. The babe is a Preiser figure, with epoxy putty clothing, had to use a Victoria Secret catalog for reference. I vacuum-formed the sign posts and drilled lots of holes; sign is a photograph that was improved with PhotoShop and printed on thick paper (along with title plaque), reflectors are Farmers Insurance bumper stickers, attached with Grant Line bolts. First time I have used Woodland Scenics, Water Effects, which is like a thick Tacky Glue, added a little acrylic paint. Real rocks, dirt, wood and grass, epoxy putty Prickly Pear and Barrel Cactus, paper Agave Cactus, Celluclay ground. There is a Tarantula waiting for her. I cut the base in a diamond to mimic the sign from the best point-of-view. So I made two dioramas with one model. Who would rescue her?
