1966* Ford J Car - April Trials
Gramps46 replied to Gramps46's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
I really should have known better. I drilled holes first thinking I could control the holes but as I tried to join the holds together and even out the top and bottom things got away from me. -

I was able to get the tail into white primer and ready for the final coat of white. Wait, I was going to open the vents first above the taillights. Now on to the spoiler and buff out the glue marks in the side windows which are glued in very solidly. -

Len My mistake on the date which I have now changed. Kar Kraft who built the J Car in 1966 and the MK IVs in 1967 had a year to make the change. -
I like both of them very much. Thanks for sharing.

Really like what you have done. It is gonna be a shame to comer it up with a body. -
* I goofed on the date, it was April 1966. This project is to convert an 1/25 MPC Ford J Car with a clear body to the car as it appeared at Le Mans in April 1966 for the trials. The major changes to the MPC kit besides paint was to convert the rear panel to a new configuration. It was here that I noticed the different taillight and other changes to the rear panel. From the parts box came some new wide taillights to be mounted on a raised area. I use Bondo Surface Putty after trying Tamiya and Miliput putty and finding the Bondo works best for me. Then added a border abound the taillights and transmission and exhaust pipe opening. I also decided to tone down the mag wheels by spraying them with aluminum and applying Tamiya Smoke (thanks Rich) to the center fins. I also decided to leave the chassis the way it is since to repaint everything would mean disassembling all the pieces. The original builder used the box art for the chassis.

By 1962 Eric Broadley, the founder of Lola Cars Ltd, decided he needed to move to the mid-engine configuration, as had Ferrari and Lotus, with their racing sport cars. He proceeded with the design and construction of 3 MK VI GTs for races in 1963 powered by a small block Ford V8. Eric drove the new GT to Le Mans in 1963 and arrived only to encounter issues with the scrutineers which required some significant changes which took time away from practice by David Hobbs and Dickie Attwood. During the race there were problems with the gear change which resulted in a missed shift and put the GT into the wall and out of the race. Concurrently Ford had embarked upon their Total Performance program and company execs attended the ’63 Le Mans. They were impressed with the Lola GT and kept it in mind when negotiations for the purchase of Ferrari collapsed. Ford then put out a request for proposals from Lola and Lotus for the development of the Ford GT40. Lola won and began the construction of the Ford GT Prototypes for the 1964 racing season. The model is a 1/24 resin kit from Scale Kraft in South Africa. Unfortunately, only a few were made before the founder was injured mountain climbing and was not able to continue production. The model is mostly OOB except for a change to the wheels and tires.
