On FB a fella posted two patina/rat rods with a very cool bare metal type finish. He said he'd painted the car flat black via rattle can and then with a soft cloth, wiped testors bottle silver over it. I meant to ask him more, but got distracted and lost the post. Has anyone heard of this technique? I'd love to hear more about it.

I've always though this kit would make a very cool LSR vehicle. I'll be watching.

I guess roll cages and the like are the most common parts scratch built. Also some custom steps for my '50 and fenders from sheet aluminum.

I'm not much of a show car or custom car type of guy. But this is very appealing work. Very nicely done.

I know what you're going through. I entered the service, got married and had kids. In the 10 years in the service and the following 8 years trying to get secure professionally, I probably built three models. I'm proud of you for realizing that something has to take a back seat and the hobby should be it. I'm with Tom though, keep all you can of your collection if you have the space to do so, and the need for cash isn't dire. It is something yoy will appreciate in the years to come.

A couple of suggestions. Scrub the body down with 70% isopropyl alcohol (drug store) and someone elses tooth brush. This will knock down the edges of the paint breaks and give the rusted areas a look more weathered over time look. For the faded areas, a very light sanding with 600+ grit with water. be gentle until you get the look you are after. After that, I recommend a wash with a rust colored acrylic craft paint. I tends to adhere well in the rough areas and really adds the realism.

Glad you enjoyed. I really like Ant. He's a very skilled fella and takes time to explain how things work. I quite agree. If I had a car screwed up by someone else, I'd take it to Dan to get it un-screwed up. Sadly though the show is over. From what I've read these shows demand a LOT of time from the cast, and get in the way of day to to day operations of the garage. I can imagine Dan would only put up with that for so long. Long work days. That's why Shorty doesn't appear on the current season of Iron Resurrection. As a recent grandfather, he wanted more family time. I find these shows facinating and fun for the most part. I like keeping them on in the background when I'm building.

I think there are a lot of shows that all have something we'd like to change. I watch his show and enjoy his work quite a lot. To look at. I'm not positive I'd want any of it as a daily driver.

I am enjoying the build. I hope to do something similar to the coupe.

That is VERY impressive. A lot of extra details that a person might want in a 1:1 vehicle, but few would think of in a model, like the extra headroom roll cage and the step ends on the bumpers. Terrific planning and execution.

That could be. Also, where I would hesitate to debate Tom in matters of weathering, as the body is molded black, adding a black paint layer probably isn't necessary. I've done a few projects like this and my method is similar to Toms, where I use red and grey primer, but I layer them based on which color will contrast better with the top coat, and that one goes on last. Then a very light coat of a color, and then my top color. This could offer the effect that the car was painted more than once in the past, again I use a contrasting color like white. Get a very low tack tape and when it's time to sand, 600 grit wet with very little pressure.

This is a sad but ultimately, good thing. As increased rates following Memorial Day and July 4 have indicated, there is a sizable segment of the U.S. population that doesn't understand what's at stake here.

I feel very lucky after spending at least half my life in Florida, to have finally moved to a dry climate. It has absolutely changed my life. Even in the high 90's, a bit of a breeze and some shade, keep up the fluids, and I'm good to be outside all day. I love being outdoors now. I highly recommend it folks.
