I replaced the cowl vent area and the 400 hood from the FB, which took some doing. The Camaro cowl is slightly wider, so I added strips of plastic to each side and blended in the plastic - before gluing to the body. Firewall area was filled with plastic (including a filler crescent piece under the cowl vent. I blended in the plastic before I installed the cowl vent panel in place. I prepare the inaccessible areas prior to adding final parts.

Next was to correct the lumpy transition between the nose and the passenger side fender. This was simply done by backing the area with scrap plastic and filling with putty.

Blue parts are Revell 69 Camaro, light grey parts are 69 Firebird, white is scrap plastic. First off, I cut off the nose portion from both kits. I lined them up along the fender eyebrows. Funny thing was, the driver side fender on the FB was 1/16" too tall and I had to section out that much from the top to blend it into the Camaro fender. However, the passenger side fender lined up almost perfectly. I cut away the lower part of the Camaro fender, just under the eyebrow to graft in the vented parts from the 'Bird. I filled in the Camaro vents with putty, being careful not to damage the details. To save the rocker trim, I cut off the trim from both cars first to swap over when the fenders were finished.

It all started a few months ago with a statement Snake45 made regarding how bad the MPC/AMT 69 Firebird kit is: That was the motivation I needed to attempt a project I had been planning for a long time.

Mecum Auctioning Model Cars !!!
Oldcarfan27 replied to Mike 1017's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
At $5 increments, prices are going to get really stupid, really fast or only a few will take the bait. I get really tired of these auction houses hyping goods to the point where every estate heir thinks that their grandpas dusty, broken clutter is suddenly worth gold bars from Fort Knox. Look what's happened to the price of rusty, rotten junk cars - thank Mecum, Barrett Jackson and these other "providers" for letting these other hicks see the light. Better find those garage sales quick, before the word gets out! -
Met my first Palmer kit today.....
Oldcarfan27 replied to JollySipper's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Crazy as this sounds, this is probably the ONLY Palmer kit I ever hope to find someday (maybe the 71 Challenger, too). I'd really like to take up the challenge to try to correct the flaws and make a more accurate replica out of it! I think it could turn out pretty good and I'd like to be the one to tell folks that it was a Palmer. Too bad it was ruined to make the 70-71-72 conglomeration it became. -
Same for me, Rich. Been looking for buildable kits like these for some time, so I feel very fortunate you helped me out. We will trade again!

Kudos to Keith Buckner (Bucky) on a quick trade. Great parts Hope to do it again!

Operating convertible top in 1:25
Oldcarfan27 replied to BIGTRUCK's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here's some photos of real ones to use for reference. Probably would be best to use Brass channel for strength and the ability to solder pivot points. Maybe use umbrella material for the canvas. -

That'd be cool to see! Can you post pics of the entire article? -
Modelers lead the way!
Oldcarfan27 replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
At least you'll be able to PROVE that car in the impound lot is yours. -
Boy, I wish I was near your trash can back then, I'd have been in heaven!

Great color choice! I love how the style lines draw the eye towards the rear. Kind of like air flowing over those supple curves. Wonder why GM didn't do that?

Mercedes 450 rally kit.. Worth buying?
Oldcarfan27 replied to Scott8950's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
SLCs are 4 seat, longer wheelbase coupes. SLs are the Short Wheelbase 2 place roadsters. AFAIK, Monogram is the only SL body type. -
Mercedes 450 rally kit.. Worth buying?
Oldcarfan27 replied to Scott8950's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I would trade for it. But $10 for the kit, plus around $14 to ship it, you're into it for $24 - is it worth it for you? Probably should make sure it's all there and unbuilt to get the most value for it. See if you can get it for less, and you'll have more flexibility for trades! Personally, I like the subject matter and they don't get reissued much (if at all). I always liked these roadsters when they were new. Even more now that you don't see them on the road much anymore. -
Suspensions on Kustom Cars?
Oldcarfan27 replied to JollySipper's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The first hydraulic suspension incorporated on a car was done on a Kustomized Corvette sometime in the mid 50s, using surplus military aircraft landing parts. The owners name was Ron Aguirre and the car was called X Sonic. I've heard a story that he would drive around with the car lowered, be pulled over by a cop for the infraction and as the cop would write him up, he would subtly raise the car up before the cop could measure it's unlawful height. Leading to his acquittal. That's how it all started. Look it up! -

Can anyone ID this Maverick?
Oldcarfan27 replied to Oldcarfan27's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
At $285 - it aint gonna move to my house!!! -
Not 100% sure how Dodge did it, but I would have to assume that there is a drive shaft bearing in there somewhere because a single shaft that long would be a nightmare to balance. Would also have a lot of rotating mass to keep under control during high speeds. Chevy split theirs on extra long trucks probably for that same reason.

That looks sleek! Kind of an update of a 59 Caddy. Please put a stock type "Firemist" color on it to continue the tribute. Make it believable.

This ad came up on our forum, the image terrifies me. What artist thinks this is an inspiring layout? It looks like the mechanics don't know what in the ---- they're doing. And he's happy about it!

Ross used to have discounted kits, got some great deals there. I remember JC Penney outlet store in the Ontario Mills outlet mall many years ago had Vanagon Westfalia vans for $3.99. I bought three! The SavOn store 30 years ago had a large supply of forgotten kits from the 70s, I bought what I could afford. Eventually they all disappeared, probably somebody cleaned them out.
