Well actually, given the design of the 1:1 taillights, even if they were red-clear plastic they'd still be quite a feat to paint. How would you mask off all of those little holes, either way? I personally think MPCs way of doing it would be easier. Paint the car first and then flow some thinned red acrylic paint into the areas. Wipe off excess and done! What I find upsetting on the kit is that over the years MPC softened the styling crease along the side (just under the side windows) to just a rounded off blur. The '79 annual has it perfectly, by '87 it's gone altogether. That and the 16" wheels look like 14's. But that's just me.

Jeep "Easter Eggs"?
Oldcarfan27 replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Quote copied from the article. "But not all Jeep owners were aware of these “Easter eggs,” which include spiders, lizards, a Sasquatch or other symbols hidden throughout the vehicle. In Foster’s video, he discovers a tiny “spider” inside his gas tank." What's the big deal? I find spiders in my project car Trans Am all the time! ? -

Rarity of street stalker camaro

I've had this kit before, it's nothing unusual. The only parts different are the front seats, wheels, engine intake and that large "schnozz" on the front end. If I recall, it was part of a series of cars that Monogram offered as custom versions of their regular street cars back in the late 70s. The others that I recall in the series were the: Custom Firebird Street Machine. Custom GMC Jimmy RX7 Cafe Racer Mustang Cafe Racer Citation X Malibu Street Machine I don't see a huge outcry for this series to be reissued, in fact, most of the time the custom parts are discarded and the rest of the cars are used for restoring regular kits. The only exception would be the Jimmy/Blazer which many of us would love to see come back! My thought is, get it and build it if you like it. Or you might offer to trade it to someone here. But don't expect to retire on it's rarity. -
Soooo, I guess a toothpick holding the hood up is out too?

AMT Home Improvement 55 Nomad, AMT Christine - Buddy Riperton Camaro, AMT Christine - Dennis Guilder Charger, I know the last are movie tie-ins, but AMT already had the Christine license. -
Good one!

Love the vintage look. Reminds me of an old 60s rock band album cover. I'm expecting to see a psychedelic band name across the top. Any ideas for a group name? Perhaps the "Teddy Boys"?

Great job, and very inspiring to see a finished kit of this model!

I just used eyeball engineering to match the pictures. At this point, I don't remember how much it was. I think the plastic I used was .040 thick and I used two pieces on the back end. I cut the quarter panels all the way up to just under the rear window area and carefully bent the trunk up. I filled the voids with a wedge of .040 plastic and sanded the area smooth. Add salt to taste! ?

I'd like to build that model of Mercedes, what company makes it?

Cool thing about this kit, the doors open up if you cut them out and use the supplied hinges to make them work. So yes, the 53 and 54 panels are the same.

I also find a lot of PE stuff at my local model train store. Boxcar walks, bridges and various other parts. Use your imagination and their parts make great grille materials.

Something I noticed today MPC 72 GTO
Oldcarfan27 replied to SCRWDRVR's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Mirrors are one of those small details that are the most obvious when done well, but detract if done wrong. Mostly, installing them so they are the correct ones for the car, in the right place on the door, with the right angle and no glue slop holding it on (which makes it easier to fall off). Tall order to be sure, in fact the whole ordeal gives me hives just thinking about all that. Using pins to hold them in place helps, but I've had them still break off because they're so small. And if they're the tiny chrome round mirrors from the 60s, they're even too miniscule to get a pin inside them at all. I wonder if anybody has ever cast white metal copies with the pin included, with fine detail as well? Might be a great cottage industry product in and of itself. -
Are you going to build it? If you like it, go for it! I'd say, use the AMT Daytona mismash and go to town with it. Those kits are plentiful and cheap. And if you ruin it or give up on it - no big loss. But if you succeed - then you can brag how you made that lousy kit look good! As Snake45 says, "Model On!"

1/25 AMT Y-193 '69 Camaro Kit History & Evolution
Oldcarfan27 replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Brandon, You should consider making it a small block pace car. The decals can be found easily, you have all the critical parts and the Pace Car kit is even more rare than the standard kit. Besides, it would look so cool displayed in front of that box for proof of it's origin! Just my opinion.
