'67 Jeepster
Plowboy replied to Plowboy's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Thanx Don! And thanx for the link also! Judging by the position of the rear side marker and no marker on the front fender lip, that one is a '68. I know the instructions state '70. I wonder if it has the marker on the hood? I couldn't see to tell what kind of top it has if any. It's cool to see that MPC did actually update the body after the first run. I'd love to have the bush grille and bumper. -
This is another build just for fun. I built it for an online contest on another forum. I wanted it to be as simple as possible. So, no details. The only parts not from the kit are the wheel covers (AMT Avanti), front tires (Revell '50 Ford), rear tires (Revell '48 Ford), headlights (Revell '40 Ford) and the air cleaners (AMT '36 Ford). I had never chopped a body style like this. So, I wanted to give it a try. I gave it a mild three scale inch chop. It was much easier than I thought it would be. I also did some fitment work with body, fenders and hood. I finished the body off with Tamiya Black and Clear. The engine is the kit Olds. The interior is stock and painted with Krylon Boot Brown. Thanx for checking it out!

Very nice! I really like the color combo! I especially like that you got rid of the red stripe on the wheels. That small touch makes a huge difference in my opinion.

Thanx guys! This'll probably be the last update. All I have left to do is polish and foil the body, add a few more pieces, assemble and it'll be done. I've done as much as possible to the engine before gluing it to the chassis. Once I get it glued in, I can assemble the interior. I still have to detail the dash. I also need to find or make a battery box.

Upcoming Car Kit News from NNL Motor City
Plowboy replied to tim boyd's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I got all of the roadsters I wanted the first time around. So, I'm good on those. I'm guessing that since the roadster now has the Chevy engine, the coupe will have the Buick engine? I passed on the coupe the first time around because I didn't like the goofy looking headers. I don't understand why they had to put the hump in the rear header pipe to clear the steering shaft on the Chevy engine (sure doesn’t make sense on the passenger side). But, didn't on the Buick engine. Small thing to some or most. But, it was enough to keep me from buying it. If the coupe comes with the Buick engine and better headers, I'll definitely get one. -
Really nice looking little Datsun! Where did you source the engine?

Thanx for that photo Mike! That clears thing up! I don't have the Moebius Comet. But, I ran across a photo that showed the "supposed" Moebius chassis and it was identical to the AMT chassis. Maybe the builder had his wires crossed. Doesn't matter. I wouldn't use one under a '63 Fairlane anyway.

What glue to use during building?
Plowboy replied to ThreeThree's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I use tiny drops of crazy glue to do mockups when I need the strength. I apply it with a toothpick. I use Elmer's glue for the rest. I've had good luck using Elmers. You do have to allow it to dry completely to hold well. -

Thanx again everyone for the comments, I appreciate it! Since posting this, I've been working on getting the other tops done while working on other projects. I now have the half top, convertible top, boot cover and the rear cap all finished. So, I can now change up the look whenever I want. I may rework the rear seat to make it removable when I want to use the half top. -
That little Fairlane has a really nice look about it! Well done!
-
That is one sharp looking El Camino! Everything is done nice and neat. Nice work!

Just as I had hoped, just two coats of clear darkened the Gun Metal substantially. I think one more will get it right where I want it. Before

I've not seen anything inaccurate about the roof on this model. Nothing that jumps out at me like most of the Moebius kits. If you check the Moebius '65 Comet chassis against an AMT '66 Fairlane chassis, you'll see they're identical. It's why the '65 Comet has a '66 firewall. The Revell Fairlane chassis is far better than the later model AMT Fairlane chassis. No comparison. I have a '62 Fairlane that I can compare the roofs with. I'll have to check that out. Edit: I compared the '62 and '63 roofs. I can say with absolute certainty that the '63 roof isn't a sedan roof with the door /window posts removed and the windshield/backlight reworked. The '63 has a shorter roof/longer tulip panel just as it should.

Can you use BMF over flat paint?
Plowboy replied to Hotrod 97's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
It doesn't have to be glossy. Just smooth and clean. I just applied foil over primer on the scripts of my current project. No problems. -
Step notching a frame.
Plowboy replied to Stephen82kck's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I built a notched frame for a model. But, I started from scratch. The best advice I can give you is do a search on YouTube. You can adapt the same procedures to your model. If you're just notching it the thickness of the frame, it's really simple. Glue a new frame section on top of the frame, allow it to dry well and then just trim the old frame section away. Your frame will still be square and still the right length. If you want a lot of notch, you'll have to make your C section first. I use styrene strip that scales out to 2.5 x 4. Then glue it to the frame and trim away the old section. Here's a couple of photos of the one I built. May or may not help you out. -
Can you use BMF over flat paint?
Plowboy replied to Hotrod 97's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If you're concerned about the texture, lightly sand what you'll be covering with foil. I usually do it whether it's a flat or gloss paint to get a smooth surface. -
Once the paint was dry and unmasked, I couldn't wait to do a mockup on the chassis. I think once I paint the recess on the chrome strip and get the foil on, the color will really come to life. All I like having the interior done is the dash and shifter. I scratch built a shifter. I couldn't find anything else that I liked.

Really liking this! Makes me want to build a modern hot rod!

Lindberg F150 chassis build
Plowboy replied to olschoolkid's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The Lightning would definitely be a better choice. You could probably do a trade for one with your Lindberg kit. Unless you want to keep it to build as a 4x4 later. If you would rather have a short styleside bed instead of the flareside, the AMT '97 F-150 actually has a short styleside bed instead of the long styleside bed depicted on the box. -
Today I got the color coats sprayed on despite the rain. It actually came out more glossy than I expected.
-
Yeah. But, the engine and transmission are from the Revell '29 Roadster.

79 Jeep CJ7 floor
Plowboy replied to Andrew D the Jolly Roger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I owned a Golden Eagle for a little while. It had painted floors and black rubber mats and seats. Probably like most vehicles in that you could have it however you wanted. I've never seen a CJ with carpet. But, that doesn't mean anything. -
Lindberg F150 chassis build
Plowboy replied to olschoolkid's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Just find the AMT version. The work is already done for you. Plus, it's a styleside. The box has a long bed on it. But, I've been told it's actually a short bed. -
Thanx Larry and Dennis! Hopefully, I can get a couple of coats of paint on today. Then I can really have a good visual of what it's going to look like. It's sanded and ready to go. I'm going to foil some of the scripts before paint. That'll only take a few minutes. I'm thinking I'll also mask off the side trim to avoid any loss of detail. Dennis, if you like this model, check out my '61 Comet in the Under Glass section. I did it the same way. Only it's a sleeper. I also have a real nice '62 Fairlane that I'm going to convert. Don't know when I'll get to it though.
