Looking good Rooster. I never considered buying an old built-up until I joined this forum. It is interesting to watch these, as everyone does something a little differently. Some do a full rebuild, sometimes it’s just a paint job or whatever. I have recently purchased 2 built-ups, not sure when I’ll get to them, but I will watch and learn in the meantime.

Western Star 4900 FA plow truck
Steve H replied to BK9300's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
And I think I make work for myself…sheesh! Seriously though, I don’t think you have missed a detail. Very impressive work Brian. Sure could have used your plow truck in my driveway this past week, just sayin… -
Ok… so I wasn’t going to get too carried away with the chassis, but after removing the molded in exhaust I had to pause and decide how to proceed. I was going to spend more time cleaning up the mess I had created than to just replace the floor pan. I am still keeping it “simple”, but there are some things that need to be done. After removing exhaust…. Then remove portion of the chassis floor… Replace with filler piece, and new crossmembers. As you can see, I have also removed the driveshaft. I’ve decided to keep the axle, but I think I might have to remove the molded in shocks. They look too much like Lego… I think I have the engine placement sorted out, but not quite 100% yet. Things filled up under the hood quickly, so I have started making a new firewall to allow a bit more room for the engine. I will set it back about 1.5mm which I believe will make everything work. Yikes, that last photo is terrible. I’m getting close to being able to do a full mock up. Once I know everything will fit, I’ll get going on fine tuning bodywork, and get going on paint work. Still playing with the colours for the engine and under hood area in my head. I know what colours, just thinking through where, and how much of each colour… Thanks for having a look, it’s been really cool to have input from all of you.

Hi Carl, thank you for sharing this. He was a kit basher for sure, but some of his builds you had to really pay attention to know what he had done. The untrained eye wouldn’t even know he had mashed up a few kits. I hope you will share your 72 GMC with us. I have sent you a PM. Thanks for following along my friend.

Hi Brian, most of my builds are LOW. I feel like I spend about 50% of my time, (maybe more), on modifications to get the stance I like. I create all kinds of problems for myself 😱🤷🏻♂️🤪. The easier route was to simply remove 3mm from the bottom of the inner fenders, but that did not allow the front wheels to sit up high enough.

My wife was at a show tonight with her Mom, 2 sisters, and 3 nieces, and a friend. So, it was BBQ time. A “reverse sear” tenderloin steak (medium rare), fingerling potatoes, roasted red pepper, and warm cherry tomatoes with olive oil and a dusting of oregano. A glass of wine too(2).
-
As mentioned earlier, I channeled the body over the chassis about 3 scale inches. Part of that work included raising the inner front fenders up 3”. This achieved 2 things, let the body sit down 3” lower, and gave more room for the front tires to tuck up under the body. Before removing… After removing, and re-attaching… Still some finessing to do, but it’s close. The hood needed some minor sanding on the underside but everything now fits nicely. This work was actually done before the mock up shots a few posts ago, just hadn’t got around to showing the pics.

Hi Ken. I think we all start with a plan, then we sort of bob and weave as the build progresses. Makes its fun.

Western Star 4900 FA plow truck
Steve H replied to BK9300's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
This is indeed a master class in detail work. So much detail… I’m sure you will find a workable solution to those pesky pinholes on the hood. We had about 8” of that nasty white stuff at my place too. Wayyyy too much time shovelling over the last few days. -

Another fun looking build Ken. I assume you painted the wood grain? It looks absolutely amazing, very nicely executed. -
Oh boy, here we go again.

Looks like it’s coming along Billy. 4 door, long box, dually, now THAT is a real truck…. -
Hi John! Sometimes my plans work out, other times not so much. I’m trying to keep this one fairly simple, but still have a nice looking shelf model, and also something that will hopefully capture the style of our friend Roger. Haven’t got to the fitment part of the engine swap yet, shouldn’t be TOO complicated…..

YES, this totally ok TJ. These are exactly the kind of stories I want to hear. It seemed obvious that Roger was very passionate about our hobby, and also 1:1 cars. He was always more than happy to answer a question, or share a tip. His interactions with others was always respectful, even if he disagreed with someone, he did so with class, I really admired that. It nice to know that he missed the forum, and came back to it. I hope you will share your favourite build, or thread of Roger’s with us here. ‘Thanks for sharing this story.

Excellent choice mate! I was going to share this one at some point during the build, so perfect for you to share it. Like you said, long, low, and smooooooooth…. It was this particular build that inspired me to “unibody” the 60. I know these ones were factory this way, so I thought it wouldn’t be too out of place on a 60. Dang he did nice work. Thanks for following along Luke, and for sharing this. Cheers mate

Who doesn't love a mock-up? Let's see yours!

I really like phantom builds. Especially “El Camino” style. -
Hey! Are you ok over there?!😂 Thank you Keith, I think? It’s a good affliction to have isn’t it Claude. As you always say, “hours of fun with styrene”. Sorry Claude, yes, it definitely has a Fiero style look to it. You are EXTREMELY knowledgeable when it comes to both 1:1 cars, and these scaled down versions. I was wondering if maybe you saw “a little something” that you thought came from a Fiero. Your kit bashing has always been an inspiration for me to push the boundaries a bit, so thank you sir.

Thanks TJ! Hi Keith, those are some very kind words, thank you. I love hearing how many of you he influenced, it’s awesome. He taught a lot of us here a thing or 20. I believe you are spot on with your comment about Roger. He likely had no idea the respect we all had for him. He seemed a pretty humble guy to me, very classy too. Thanks for checking in Keith, always appreciate your comments. Thanks Rooster. I love me a low stance Brian. Bodywork is always a test of patience, definitely not easy for me. Yes… dust… Oh!! Actually this would be a good time to mention my favourite new tool. I got one of the Dspaie mini vacuums for my hobby desk, LOVE it. Hey Luke, well, you knew it was going to be low right?…. Easy to draw inspiration from Roger’s builds as you know. Sorry for the late reply here guys, and thanks for sharing your comments. Once again please feel free to post anything from Roger here.

Thought I’d share another of the moments during planning that put a smile on my face. As I had mentioned earlier, I did a planning session , then sat down and reviewed some of Roger’s build threads. My choice of wheel/tire is from the Foose FD truck, and black wheels/trim to match the 49 Merc. Here’s a screen shot from his build thread… I literally felt like he was looking over my shoulder… So my wheel, and colour choice was immediately set in stone. Just thought I’d share that little tidbit.

Hi David. If you have any favourite builds from Roger, please feel free to post here. Obviously I loved his work, and this project is long overdue. It is also nice to hear from others here, and how much they were inspired by him. No surprise at all. Thank you Francis, those are very generous words. I always felt a connection with Roger and his build style. I have a long way to go to get to his level of quality, but there are so many talented people on here to learn from. His builds often had a low and slightly aggressive stance, as you know, I like that look! Thanks for taking the time to comment, now get back to that milling machine!😜 Thanks Greg, hoping to start working on the engine, and interior this week. 🤞

Thanks Rob, much appreciated. Looks better outside with finished builds. There is a build thread in the WIP section. -
As I mentioned early on here, I want to showcase some of Roger’s builds. There are many newer members here that are not familiar with just how much impact he had on this forum. So next up are a few more of his amazing builds, and some more of my inspiration for this project. This was Roger’s last completed build. I will be using the same engine in my truck. This is the interior from his 49 Merc. Tamiya’s dull red which I will use on the truck. This is just another example of his subtle and absolutely beautiful paint jobs…
