Revell's Peterbilt 359: WIP
Steve H replied to David G.'s topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
This is looking really good David, especially considering you are not a truck builder. I’ve got 2 truck kits to build one day, hope I can do them the same justice you are here. The tire issue looked like a bunch of no fun, good solution you found. The BMF straps on the tanks look very nice! -
Revell's Auto Transport Trailer: WIP
Steve H replied to David G.'s topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
David, I thought I had lost you, but you’re over here building rigs and trailers!! Great progress, it’s always fun doing something out of your comfort zone. I’m in for the ride. -
Wow! Very nice execution on the section Greg, and well thought out. The inspiration car is radical.

Rear bumper has also been tucked in about 2”. I am also flipping it upside down. This is something Roger was going to do on his, but went a different route. The license plate will hang below bumper, and I will relocate the mounting holes to get the bumper down about 2”. I have done A LOT… of sanding and filing on the chassis plate, the bed floor, and the underside of the body. I need this to sit low, yes that is obvious to anyone that follows my builds. So I have been nibbling, filing, and grinding away to get the body channeled over the chassis. I went with 3” in scale, (3mm) to get the look I wanted. I also wanted the bed floor to still fit the mounting points on the chassis. So after a whole bunch of super boring stuff, that really wasn’t worth showing, we get to the good stuff. Bumpers, grill, and wheels now painted. Body has 2 light coats of white primer, still a fair bit of sanding and finessing to do, but you get the idea. Ride height is VERY close to what I have in mind. MOCK TIME!! Thanks to all of you following along, I truly appreciate your interest and input. Don’t forget to, if you want to post a favourite build of Roger’s, post it!!

The front bumper was next. I wanted to “tuck it in a bit”. Shortened the front of the frame about 2 1/2 scale inches, and trimmed the inside of the fender to fit. Before… After… Chassis plate has been shortened and re-assembled. About 12 scale inches removed from wheelbase, and 10” from behind rear axle. I also ground off the molded exhaust. I will clean this mess up a bit of course. I’m probably going to end up removing the driveshaft too. Thanks for having a look.

I mentioned in one of the first posts that there were few things that made me smile after my initial planning session, then looking at Roger’s threads. When I first sat down at the bench and plunked the hood and grill on it, I thought, “that doesn’t look right”. The hood looked too tall at the front, and didn’t really “fit” the grill. When I sat down later and did a deeper dive on Roger’s WIP, turns out he thought the EXACT same thing. I chuckled, and thought I must be on the right track. So some cutting and sanding later… The hood back on after mods… Still a little bit of fettling to do, but I think it looks wayyyy better.

Thank you Anton. I find tribute and replicas very rewarding. Yes sir, I totally agree. Hi David, plan A was to NOT have an issue opening it. I didn’t quite succeed there, so plan B was replace vertical bars, plan C (always good to have options 🤔) was just the horizontal bars. I guess I had 2 reasons for adding the vertical bars, to be closer to what Roger had done, and for a little extra strength. Thanks for commenting. Hi Topher, as mentioned above, I liked the the horizontal look too, but had a couple of reasons to putting them back. That is a seriously cool truck!! Thanks for sharing that. Hi David, I will probably do another one of these one day. Sounds like I should definitely do a tube grill on it!! Consensus seems to be in favour of it. Thanks for checking in. Hi Jim! I know right… time flies. I had intended to do a tribute (or 2) back when he passed. I suppose in a way it’s nice to have waited as this will expose some of the newer members here to his talent. Thanks Carl. Next time I’m leaving them horizontal!! Hi Rooster. Thanks for sharing that. I have had a couple of PM’s with Heather. A couple back when she first signed on, and a couple recently. She does really appreciate how much we all enjoyed her dad’s work, and how respected he was here. I believe she will eventually see this. I will probably reach out via PM again sometime soon. Nice to have you following along.

9 hours!!! Holy schnickey Phil, that’s impressive. Great looking build. Takes me 9 hours to open the box and see what’s inside….😂 -
Great looking GTO John. I didn’t see it mentioned on this thread, are the wheels and tires 3d printed?

Russell, I feel like you and Kurt would be trouble together… good trouble, but trouble nonetheless. I have several screenshots saved from both of you with some great tips. Nice to have you both comment here. Oh… ya, I just had a look, and added your coil overs to my hobby tips file, thank you! Claude! I think I might have your infliction, kit bashing-itis. It was actually a fairly easy bash, just a few small hiccups. Daytona yes, Mercedes/Sauber C9 endurance racer, and I suppose there is some Fiero-ness to it, although no actual Fiero parts. Next version will be better. Thanks for taking the time to comment, always a treat to hear from you sir. Have you made plans to come to Victoria for Duece Days in July? Us local model guys would be delighted if you came. Great 1;1 show and a pretty good scale show as well. Thank you Andy. I like to be a bit different at times.

Hi Luke, great to see you back on the board. I must admit, you made me laugh saying that you were “practicing” as a refresher… Your paint work sets the bar for all of us. Always flawless and smoooooooooth….. I have also tucked the gauge bezel trick in my tips file. I have AC/DC’s “back in black” in my head now, seeing a couple of your black paint jobs…

Coming along nicely Bill. The engine weathering looks great, well done.

Rooster! Love the new Avatar. I like the path you have chosen. Keeping what you like, replace/refinish the rest. Well played.

Indeed TJ! He did it on both of the 60 Ford trucks I have seen of his. He was definitely a details guy.

Hi Phil. When I started removing material from the back, I knew I MIGHT need a plan B. It worked out well. I agree Greg. I really liked just the horizontal bars, but… as mentioned below👇 by Brian, it was quite flimsy. So the verticals were installed. Yes sir. Just needed a bit more strength… I did like the custom look, but simply having an “open” grill, especially a black one is an improvement. Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated.

I have been picking away at this, and actually have a fair bit done, just not much to show just yet. However, we have a weather system coming for the next few days, so should have another update soon. For now, just a Quick Look at the grill. One of the things I’m trying to do on all my builds now, is “open” the grill. I sanded from behind, slowly, and carefully. The vertical bars are extremely thin, and unfortunately, well I’ll let the picture talk. I thought this might happen, so on to plan B. Remove the verticals, and clean things up a bit. Then add some new vertical bars. I will prime and tidy up as necessary. Hope to have something more meaningful soon.

Hi Luke! Awesome to see you back on the board sir. I think it looks pretty good as a “Ute”! Thanks for checking in, hope you will watch this come together. It’s going to be low, (obviously), although I prefer slightly nose down, as opposed to your slightly tail down stance. Still’ low is low right?….

Thank you David! I’m chomping at the bit to do another one, but a few other projects to do first. Thanks Alex. I like that, “non conforming”… well said. It was a fun one. I think it is probably a build that you either quite like, or definitely DON’T like. Well… it’s good to see you back Kurt. I have several screen shots from your innovative builds saved in my inspiration folder. In fact, the pivoting hood prop on this build, is a variation of one you shared on a build. Possibly the Subaru cannonball car? I’ve done a few of those now, including on my recent 71 Olds, which had a magnet to hold it in place. So thanks for that!!

Hi Francis, awesome to have you on board. You hit on a couple of things there, that couldn’t be more true. “Great communicator, and generous with his innovations”, very well said. One of the things I was hoping this thread would show, is how many of us benefited from his contributions. No surprise it’s quite a few. Having a model builder/fabricator of your calibre (likely the most talented on this board, no disrespect to others) share the love of his work is a real testament to how good he was. REALLY appreciate you checking in Francis. Hi Chris! Hope all is well. He had several builds of subjects that normally wouldn’t be my thing, but his sense of style, and colour often influenced me. The 49 Merc. is a perfect example of that. As you said, there was ALWAYS something to take away from his builds. Thanks for checking in, and if you want to share some of your favourites here, please feel free.

Hi Kurt! Haven’t seen you on the board for a bit, good to hear from you. Thank you for the honest critique. Yes! I can fix that. This was my first go at this type of project, I wanted to keep it somewhat simple. I have several things I will try to improve on the next one. Certainly a bit more detail on the engine, and suspension. Thanks for checking in. Thanks Chris, for me, the biggest compliment someone can give here, is saying it gave them inspiration. Thanks for sharing that, and I look forward to seeing what you create. There are so many options for this type of build. As Kurt mentioned above, you can save some “less than perfect” kits doing this. Thanks Carl!! Love hearing from you sir.

Oh boy, here we go again.
Steve H replied to WillyBilly's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
This will be interesting Billy. To my eye, it looks like the front, and rear edges of the rear door window frame need to be wider. That would make the rear window opening smaller and “close” to correct I think. It also looks like maybe if you took a very small wedge shape from the bottom of the back door (maybe 0.5mm) and taper to nothing at the top, that should tilt the “extra cab” portion down at the top and help the roof line? So vertically at the front of the extra cab door. It’s hard to tell from the photos… Not sure if that makes sense? -

Brian, this build just keeps getting better. This is crazy! Your attention to details is absolutely outstanding sir. We get snow soon so get after it! 😂 I tucked a few screen shots in my, “need to remember that trick” album. Great stuff. The work you did on the hood is really impressive.
