1929 Ford Sport Coupe hot rod -update 10/4
OldNYJim replied to Rocking Rodney Rat's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I’ll give ya three fiddy at the end of the day ?? Outstanding fabrication and execution on this one - really enjoy your projects!! -
Yeah, it’s tough to successfully tint glass sometimes...a cheap and easy alternative is clear colored plastic sheets from Hobby Lobby, or even an office supply place. I’ve done it before where I’ll make a template from the existing glass with tape and then cut that shape out of the sheet and get it glued in there with some Elmers (or even a little tape, if the mounting point will be hidden)

That firewall is REALLY impressive! Nice job!

Oh wow, that color’s stunning! Love it! -
I really like that Photoshop that you’re using for inspiration - it’s like if Mercedes built a Cobra! Way cool! I’ll be watching!

Interesting that they call the scale “1 1/2 Inch” on the box - that’s what I use for industrial design stuff that I do. Never saw it on a kit box before!

34 Church Truck
OldNYJim replied to OldNYJim's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Ohh, good tip! Thank you! I’ll go look for that build to check it out! The front end isn’t too much of a problem, but you’re right, I need something skinny for the rear. Was messing with tire choices today in fact! These are some I have in my parts stash - not sure what they are but I like them! I have some similar ones for the rear that are a touch taller and a hair narrower, but I’m still figuring it out. Will definitely need to run some plain old steelies or similar on the back end though, thanks to my ‘clever’ idea of running fender skirts - these baby moons stick out a little far for them to fit right. Meanwhile, on easier projects, picked out some headlamps from my stash...not sure what these were from originally but they fit the look I wanted: I picked up some little silver plated jump rings at Hobby Lobby this week, hoping I could make some trim rings - looks like they’ll work great! I’ll do some more detailing with those headlamps (with everything, in fact) further down the line...I’ve been trying to get far enough along with this where I can see how it’ll look with all the major parts in place and then start adding detail. I think of it as like how an artist sketches a piece before then doing the ‘real’ work - but with parts rather than pencil ✏️ Back at the other end of the truck, I’ll be covering that bed with a removable cover - I’m going to make the inside of the bed nicely detailed and painted anyway, but I figured the cover would make sense seeing as we’re covering the wheels too... And finally, I liked the idea of a single rear taillight, on the passenger’s side rear fender and found this little support in my spares - maybe from a 35 or 36 Ford, something like that? Drilled it out so I can mount it to the fender with a pin, and added another mystery-part lens that I liked the look of to finish it off: And that’s about a wrap on today’s 6 hours at the bench...good thing I don’t have a boss for this because I didn’t get very far ?. More soon! -
I don’t trust that Darvell guy!

Thank you!! I love all those skirted cars too, definitely some cool designs there! I absolutely agree, definitely needs some sort of little trim piece or something to make it look finished. A little emblem like those ones above, maybe, or a little slither of chrome or SOMETHING. I’ve been trying to teach myself photoetching, and getting a handle on that would be a big help in achieving what I have in mind...might have to make something out of styrene though. Maybe like the navy blue one above? Tiny bit of progress, got the fenders smoothed out, and got the fender skirts glued in place for good...need to smooth them out and get the fit perfect but it’s fairly close: I’m really shooting for a timeless kind of look to this build - super clean and well thought out, but lots of little details to notice on the third or fourth or tenth viewing too. Not totally sold on the kit tires as my choice for this one yet - these are the AMT ones with the whitewall insert, but reversed...does anyone have any recommendations on some really nice 60s-ish era radials that would look good on this thing? Nothing too wide, because of the skirts, but anything nicely done and well detailed? More tomorrow, soon as I get around to doing more tomorrow! -
Hey all! Yeah, @Straightliner59 is right - it’s in with the dolls house stuff. Not QUITE in scale for 1/25 probably, but cool enough to add as a little eye-catcher for the right build: @Modelbuilder Mark - yeah, they had one lonely bottle of the Spaz Stix clear in the clearance racks at our store (Valparaiso, Indiana) so I grabbed it. Rang up at a buck 49, so I figured for that I’d find a use for it - it’s meant to be good over Alclad/Molotow/their own chrome to help protect it I guess, without dulling it? Never tried it but now I can! ?

Thank you sir! Needed some polishing once the lacquer shrunk down but nothing too major - good enough for a weekend build and something fun to put on my shelf. Speaking of which, decided to give those skinny stock tires some ridiculous full-height whitewalls, so I cut a mask and shot them: Polished out and waxed the body, and got the glass (and then interior) in there: Got the frame under the whole shebang: Wheels on (man are they a sloppy fit ?): And a couple of chrome parts later this thing’s about done, except for going over it again tomorrow to see what I need to tidy up once my eyes are fresh: Id like to build a 1/25 version of this now that I’ve seen it in smaller scale - do one where I can really get all the detail done how I’d like, but this was a fun little 2 and a half day project to mess with over thanksgiving! And we still have left-over turkey left! ??

Looks like it works great! Nice job!

I too hit the zoo that was Hobby Lobby today - picked up the 27 T kit, which I haven’t seen on their shelves for a while here (still no 29s though), and some various little metal doodads and paint and some black resin dye from the clearance section. Oh, and some roughly-in-scale Mexican blankets ?

Louvers. Possible solution?
OldNYJim replied to Straightliner59's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Oh man, the first attempt I was like “meh, kinda worked” and the second attempt I was like “WOW, check THAT out!!!!!!!!” Really impressive! -
Thank you all!! The lacquer shrunk down a little overnight, which I was expecting it would so it’s not QUITE so shiny right now, but it’ll buff up ok I’m sure Just Rustoleum lacquer clear on this one. I like enamel clear normally, but seeing as this one’s a weekend build kinda deal I didn’t wanna wait weeks before I could polish it...this lacquer will probably be good to polish out tomorrow I would think... Little tiny bit of progress today, seeing as a lot of the major stuff is done now until I can polish the body up. Masked up the frame with some Silly Putty so I could shoot a little silver on the exhausts (and a little on those front wishbones, for a little interest) Silly Putty is GREAT for these kind of jobs - works just how you’d want it to, and is easily reusable and you can smoosh it into all the cracks and crevices with a toothpick or similar. A little silver and some light washing and detail painting later, we have a slightly more interesting frame than we did... I’ll do a little more airbrushing tomorrow to bring it out a little more, but honestly I’m never going to flip this thing over once it’s on the shelf anyway, so... Oh, and I got my first chance to see this color in daylight - it was too dark here yesterday by the time I have some clear on it ?. Little vid below...more soon! IMG_2168.MP4

Questions about MCW enamels
OldNYJim replied to Monty's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The problem is Donn is that he's almost TOO good - you could give him Modge Podge to spray and he'd probably get a show winning finish So him getting a good finish with these doesn't necessarily mean I will too... My skill level is considerably lower than his, so I'm hoping the good results I just started getting with Testor's enamels (right before they discontinued the clear I like) transfer over fairly painlessly, even without Mr Yost's considerable skill and experience. I'm excited to find out though! -
Questions about MCW enamels
OldNYJim replied to Monty's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I’ve been excited to try some of these, once I’ve worked through my stash of Testors clear gloss enamel. Glad they’re out there on the market! -
That body looks great Mike! Keep going!!!
-
That window truck is COOL! What is that, Silly Putty? Great start!!
-
Yes sir! Thinned with Createx reducer though, so I could airbrush it - and the black Createx sealer is my favorite airbrush black so I used that as a base. Small update - shot a couple of coats of clear on the body - that purple pops in gloss! Assembled these tires and got them in primer - will need to do some smoothing out tomorrow before I paint them... And shot the interior tub in some black, a nice candy blue on the rim of the kit chromed steering wheel, added a little tinted gradient to the windshield and shot the dash to match the body, just because I was looking for something else to paint in this color ?? More soon, soon as I’ve done more!

Thanks fellas! Happy thanksgiving! Hope you’re all having a nice safe day doing thing you’re thankful for with people you’re thankful for! Dinner eaten, family hung out with - back to work here ? Smoothed out the body and got it in primer - used a real thin coat just to give the paint something to bite onto: Then, a base of Createx sealer: I messed with some spoons this morning and tried the paint I’m using over some different bases and it looked kinda cool over a black base, but MANNN does it look nice over a Corvette body compared to a plastic spoon ?? Front and rear shot... Those lines really set off that color! ?? Shot the underside in the same shade, although I’m definitely going to have to do plenty of detail painting on that... Got a fun idea for a paint scheme on this one...this is just the first step...more soon!

It’s a long standing tradition (that I just came up with this week) that I build a kit over thanksgiving. Like those 24 hours of Daytona builds that some people do, but with more days and more turkey sandwiches. My wife gave me this 1/32nd AMT Vette kit as a gift last month, and I’ve been wondering how to build it, so I figured this would be a good skills-challenge to see if I can make something shelf-worthy between tonight (Thanksgiving Eve) and Sunday evening. To further add to the challenge, and partially because I couldn’t decide on a color, I figured I’d let my wife pick a paint from my airbrush stash for me to use. I figure there’s not many colors you could paint a Vette where it wouldn’t look great anyway, right? Here’s what she chose: Welp, I wanted a challenge, and apparently “it reminds me of mermaids” is a valid reason to chose a paint color, so I’m gonna get thinking on some paint ideas with this color as a base. Guess we’re not calling this one factory stock (although my stash of 1/32 spares is exactly zero parts, so it can’t stray too far from what’s in the box...). This kit is REALLY low detail, as you’d expect from the scale and when it was originally issued, so I’ll be doing some fiddly detail painting over the next few days. As you can also see here, the front and rear valances are moulded into the chassis, which seems like it’ll make it tough to get the bodywork nice... So, some razor-sawing later I split those parts off the ‘frame’ and attached them to the body instead: Better! I’ll let those set up over night and then get to doing some bodywork tomorrow - and shooting some of those color over some spoons to see if I can find a base coat that makes it look decent. More soon, happy Thanksgiving to y’all!
