1907 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, 1/24 Finecast metal kit
Bainford replied to Matt Bacon's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This is quite a kit. The molded detail is remarkable, and the built up subassemblies are excellent. Very fine work so far. Do you build many metal kits? I’ve been curious to have a go at one, but my preconceived notion is that they are generally monsters with deplorable fit. Apparently this is not necessarily so. I’m very impressed with this one. -
I mask and paint after the final polishing. I use BMF as the masking medium. Tamiya semi gloss black acrylic sprayed lightly usually looks pretty good.

Nice work. I must say it looks better than I thought it would. Good job integrating all of the various components into one cohesive look. Really digging the early Charger talilight assembly.

Excellent build of this notoriously difficult kit. Probably the best I've seen. Kudos for sticking with it and seeing it through. Beautiful job. As a 16 yr old in high school in the early 80s I had a shop teacher who was a 59 Ford fanatic. He owned over a dozen of them, including two Skyliners. He also had a case of the Revell kits, and knowing I was a model builder he asked if I would put one together for him. I was excited to have a go, but eventuality threw in the towel. That kit owned me. Not wanting to be bested by a kit, in the 90s I purchased another one to give it another try. It's still sitting in my stash, sneering at me from time to time. One day I'll take another crack at it.

This is my method as well, and never had a problem. Tamiya also has clear red in lacquer bottle now. I've bought some but have yet to try it. For clarification, I am airbrushing the stuff, not hand painting.

They seemed to be quite common back in the day. I know they came on the early 80s Broncos and the late 70s Dodge stepsides with 4wd (Warlock and Fire Fighter, etc). Some of the Dodge D50 kits had them, and the Datsun tow truck thing had two of them. Some jeep kits as well, but one must be careful as I think some Jeep kits came with the larger tires, too (maybe the Jeep Commandos). There were several others as well.

I have used Tamiya clear blue, sprayed lightly with an airbrush to good effect. I have also seen work by others using blue and purple sharpie type markers that looked very good, too. A little experimentation with scrap parts is recommended.

Cheers Tim. Your photo of the v-12 block illustrates things nicely. I generally keep my mouth shut on such issues. Some people are interested to know while others view it as criticism, and I do not wish to criticize. Looking forward to more of your excellent build. I'm quite envious of your brass panel skills.

Great pair of photos. Same car?

Well, as I say, it's a nit-pick. Minor stuff, and unnoticeable to most. The cylinders on each cylinder bank of the Ardun are arranged in pairs, the cylinders in each pair being a mirror image of each other in terms of valve train/rocker arm configuration. A v-8 engine will have two of these 'pairs' on each side of course, and a v'12 would have three of these 'pairs'. For a v-12 such a configuration would have spark plugs arranged thus; oo oo oo. With significant and unnecessary re-working of the valve train you could possibly have a plug arrangement of oo o o oo, but in the real world no one would do this. The spark plug configuration on the 3D printed v-12 Ardun is ooo ooo. If numbering the cylinders on one side 1-6 from front to back, cylinder 1 would have one plug, cylinder 2 would have two plugs, cylinders 3 & 4 would have no plugs, 5 would have two and 6 would have one. It's all a bit pedantic, really, but I noticed when viewing the photos. The vast majority will likely not know the difference. By no means do I wish to detract from your stellar build. Cheers.

Beautiful build. Love it!

Good looking car. Nice clean build.

Sweet looking 7 litre.

Wow. Very impressive work, especially your tin work. Cool project, I dig your vision. The car has nice lines and a great look. One unfortunate nit-pick is the plug spacing on the Ardun. They should be arranged as three groups of two. Looking forward to watching this build come together.

It’s coming along nicely. The two kits I ordered arrived on Wednesday. The new additions to the kit are nicely done and quite welcome.
