Thanks for the tutorial. There is a bit of a problem with the door hinges, though. They are assembled backwards, causing the door to swing away from the body when opened. If the vertical element (tube) of the hinge was mounted to the door and the two horizontal tubes were affixed to the car body (the opposite of what is depicted above), the door would open prototypically correct (at least for most cars), with the leading edge of the opened door tipping in towards the car (and tucking in behind the trailing edge of the front fender). Cheers

No fallen electronic items get thrown out of my house without first harvesting the model parts from inside. An old VCR provided a great pile of gears and similar components that only need the rust treatment to make a cool junk load for an old truck. Wires and diodes aplenty, of course. An old CD player had some perfect rubber suspension air bags. On a project a few years ago I needed an orange wire of a specific gauge, but could find nothing useful in my stash, so I started ripping apart electronic items in the house. Several sets of airplane headphones and an old DVD player bit the dust, but an old lap top provided the exact bit I needed.

Very nice Merc. I have been interested in this kit for years so It's good to see one built up. I wasn't aware that this kit was generally deemed to be a poor kit. You have done an excellent job on yours. The black washing brings out the natural details quite well. Well done.

Nice build. It's good to see a 49 Merc that is not full of lead. Black suits it really well. Well done.

Nice work on the Jag. It's hard to find a car with nicer, smoother lines than this one. The colour is period perfect and suits this build very well. I have this kit on the bench, and I must say it is a much nicer kit than I first expected. It started out as a Monogram metal body kit, later issued in plastic under the Revell name. I expected chunky parts and a low parts count, but I was pleasantly surprised when I first opened the box. The only issue I have had so far is the fit of the bonnet.

It's not exactly my kind of build, but I must say it has great lines. Overall this thing is looking very cool. Nice work so far, looking forward to seeing how it will progress. Cheers.

Revell 56 Ford truck history
Bainford replied to 68shortfleet's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The early/mid 70s Super Trick version was one of my favourite kits as a kid. Built a couple of them, though even as a kid I found the assortment of components kind of strange. The big funny car tires & wheels but little else in actual race parts. The engine options were fine for a street cruiser but didn't seem right for a drag machine. Nonetheless, I thought it quite cool. Another issue of the kit not mentioned here (added for interest sake) is the Big 10-Ford, probably a late 70s release though I got mine in the mid 80s. The race tires/wheels are gone, replaced by Revell's era typical, industry's worst two piece plastic tires and 10 (?) hole wheels. Not sure if the Pontiac engine is still in the box. Includes stake sides for the bed rails and is molded in metallic brown. There are a couple of different box art editions for this release, obviously leaning heavily on the CB radio craze of the time. After all of these years I plan to get started on mine sometime in the near future, to build a stock Marmon-Herrington version. -
Somehow I never knew this kit existed. Good work on yours. The molded colour looks spot on. Nicely done.

Nice build of a wonderful old classic. I wonder if the tooling still exists for this kit. I would love to see this one re-issued.

Excellent work, especially on the period detailing. I'm really digging the aircraft belts. Your attention to period details really make this model stand out. Well done!

Great looking Lotus (drop the Caterham). It's a clean build and the paint looks very good, and the engine detailing brings it to life. Very nicely done.

I'd be much more interested if the cab was mounted over the front wheels, where it belongs. Then it would be cool. -
Very cool project!

Not to mention, the vast majority of battery charging is done by burning fossil fuels. -
The Best 1st Generation Ford Thunderbird Kit?
Bainford replied to W-409's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I built the 1/16 '55 Bird when I was younger. It was my first big scale kit and I was disappointed. It has the same detail level as a simplified 1/25 kit, including metal axels front and rear, the front going through the engine sump. It made a nice shelf model, but the build was simple and straight forward. -

Personally, I am a big fan of wax. Regardless of the shine I get after polishing, I find the sheen provided by waxing amps up the realism. I use Tamiya wax. Wax must always be the last thing you do to a body. Decals, paint, glue, etc won't stick once the thing is waxed. I have never had an issue with wax having a negative effect on decals. In fact, I find it improves their appearance. It's probably worth mentioning here that I rarely ever clear coat my paint, again for reasons of realism. To my eye, clear coated paint generally looks unrealistic, and perhaps that is the reason the waxed finish looks good to my eye. Metallic paints being the exception, of course, but I mostly paint in solid colours. I also polish and wax the kit glass which does great things for improving clarity and reducing optical distortion, and it makes removing fingerprints easy. Just another POV.
