Ken, I really like this idea as well. I'll be watching. (Kurt, I did see you blue version. Very well done.)

Dann, You have been doing an amazing job packing in the extra detail on this kit. I've enjoyed every post detailing a new solution for increased accuracy. Can't wait to see the finished product. Scott

This was a fun chore to cross off my to-do list. I had piled up a bunch of Car and model magazines in an old book case and it was time to sort them out. Here are the Model Cars going all the way back through the Plastic Fanatic when Roy then Gregg was the editor. It was really a great trip to browse them before I put them in order. What fantastic memories of some amazing builders. Some still are at it and some seem to have disappeared into the ether. What they left behind still is a treat to see. The one constant through every magazine -Tim Boyd. I even have an old 60s magazine with his Charger funny car as a contest winner. Wow.

All I can say is "Wow!" What a collection of stunners. So many amazing models in one year.
-
I also like that you built a Moon Cube. It looks great! Ira would be proud. The Haulin' Hearse is another winner.
-
Nice collection. I really like that Henry J. It looks like you made a lot of mods to it.

I'll be watching this one Bernard. I started one a long time ago. It was very brittle. I'm sure this will have your usual excellent look and stance. Scott

Got some mail today. The truck rims and tires are for a revived project I am back on. I widened to kit tires myself. I thought they came out pretty good until a friend was checking out the project and and "Yeah, I can see where you widened them right there." as he pointed to the seam. So these are an improvement. Hopefully, they will seat better than the modified kit items. This is another Monogram late 4os era balsa kit. I have three of the five now. (There are 4 cars and a boat) I'm looking for the other two- the Aquajet boat and the Terrajet land speed car. This Midjet is mint in the box. There is a mint Aquajet boat out there, but I have to see where things land after Christmas. I'll have to wait for the Terrajet to show up.

I found my old thread from 2018 and brought it back in the hopes that I can maintain momentum. I did find a transmission that looks pretty close. It is an Allison from shape ways. I also crorrected the ribs on the T/F blower Louie is using. Here is the real thing Here are the parts. The blower is on the left. Up next will be the headers. Scott

Hello, After a few years of not building anything, I finally got back to my workbench. First up is finishing the custom truck project. I need help identifying the transmission. I have a few obscure pics. I would appreciate help from anyone who can direct me to a picture that I can use to build one or where i can find already built. Here is where I am now with the project overall These are the pic I have of the real transmission Thanks for ant help with what type of trans that is. I am pretty sure it is an automatic, Scott

How are defining youth? before 20? If so, I'll give it a go. This is my oldest surviving custom. Not as cool nor as old as some of the ones already posted, but it is a custom built trike. This one survived - almost. When I was finishing it up the body got chewed by our puppy, so the chassis and engine went in another project. I have the parts to take another run at it someday. The dog lived a long life, but is in chew toy heaven now. Here is the chassis and engine - now with nitrous and injectors on a project completed about 4 years later.

Don't be afraid to ask!
Scott Colmer replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've also had 99% great experiences with asking people about how they did what. I've been to one GSL and everyone there was glad to provide tips and techniques and even just talk about their model. That includes several past winners. Last time I went to Grand National Roadster show I talked to builders and lots of the land speed guys. They were very friendly and had some amazing stories about 300+ mph "learning experiences." I've sat with and talked with Marcellus and in the Winged Express. He was a great guy. Really fun. My wife got to climb in a streamliner built by the son of a famous early chassis builder who's name escapes me right now. I was too big to fit. When they closed it up, she wanted out. All you have to do tell them you like their car and then ask them about it. The one I missed that I think of the most.... I spent the whole day at the SoCal NNL several years ago and talked to all but one of the great guest they had there. When the show was over, I learned that one guest I did not get to know was Steve Stanford - only of my real automotive heroes! Doh! I had no idea what he looked like. Hangin' with Marcellus at Crusin' for a Cure -
Wow. That looks Soooo right!

Biggest pet peeves on builds.
Scott Colmer replied to LL3 Model Worx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My pet peeve is also bumpy foiling. I also not a fan of lots and lots of photo etch fo photo etch sake. I remember one super detailed model that had the PE seatbelt bracket neatly anchored to what would be an aluminum wheel tub. I am guilty of at least two things: 1) The parted hair plug wires. And yes I believed I was using a reordered cap. I stole and HEI cap from an 80s Camaro to sell it. 2) I have always claimed I built my first model at...4. Don't throw things just yet. After reading all the skeptical posts, I wondered if I had exaggerated that story over the years. So I just called my 80 year old mom, who is still of sound mind. I asked her how old was I when I build my first model. She paused then said "Four." "It was a pretty simple one. As they got more complicated, your older brother had to help you with the instructions. After a while he told you you would have to do it yourself, so you learned to read so you could build models." I've heard that story before, but she never put an age to it. I do have some memory of that first model. I found it at the bottom of a toy box at my great grandma's house. It was a Black Widow that one of my uncles had discarded. The major parts were there but had come off. I played with it until I figured out how it went together. When my parents picked me up, they got a tube of glue and put me at the kitchen table with a lot of newspaper. There was also what I know now to be a Long John, but I could not figure it out because the heads on the side of the body did not make sense. Anyhow, one of the heads from the Black Widow floated around my parts box for decades. I remember it was was pretty warped from all the glue I used. So that's my story. I can see how it is possible that the family may have moved the age back a bit over the years, but I'm not going argue with my 80 year old Mom. Scott -
Issue #206, Contest Issue, MAILED!!!
Scott Colmer replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow, Gregg! I'm impressed at your fortitude. I'll have to pick up a copy as my local hobby shop or book store. Well done, my friend. Scott -
I've really enjoyed following this build. You are doing a great job with it.
