This one goes waaaaaaay back. I was watching the silent movie "Wings"(made in 1927) on TCM last Sunday night. The setting of the first part of the movie is just before the U.S. enters World War 1(circa1915-1916).One of the characters(Richard Arlen)is building a Model T speedster during this time.As I'm watching the scene of him tearing apart the Ford(just grabbing fenders and the rear section of the body work and tossing them away without the use of tools-what a hoot!)something isn't looking correct. That's when I realized that the T being used is a car from the early twenties!OOPS!

It's interesting, and speaks to scale fidelity, that a Viper nose had to be widened to fit a Beetle.Even factoring in the scale difference the Viper nose should have been a lot wider than the Beetle front end.

Tamiya Mercedes 300SL Announced, new pics added to OP
ZTony8 replied to martinfan5's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Tamiya does beautiful engineering so the pieces fit together with little or no fuss.My ONLY knock on their kits is that sometimes the things they leave out make for glaring omissions. -
I sanded some un-cleared Phoenician yellow on a Moebius Hudson after I had let it dry for several weeks. It polished up very nicely.

Main sponsor is Mister Casket.

Niko, you might want to try starting your polishing with either the 4000 or 6000 papers. If the surface isn't leveling to your satisfaction you can always drop back a grit.By starting your polishing with the smoother paper you won't risk burning through the finish as easily as with the rougher grit paper.

I recall building one of the turquoise versions not too long after they came out.I was disappointed at the pronounced front to rear bow of the body and the height at which it sat.

The headache is over!!!!!!The deal closed on January 22nd.I don't have to go to the house anymore. This is such a stress reliever. Now to assimilate all the small stuff in my house.

Prime on sprue or not?Depends on where the part is attached. If it's attached at a spot that will be hidden at final assembly, leave it on the sprue. If not, do a sub- assembly and then prime. Also- be wary of compatability of primer and paint.I've had a bit of a coverage problem when putting Tamiya lacquer over Duplicolor primer. You may have something similar if you use one of your available primers(Halford's?).It's better to match primer brand with paint brand.

I bought my copy at the hobby store last Saturday.I didn't notice any difference in the paper but I wasn't looking for it either.

The trick is to challenge the Tesla to a road trip.Maybe L.A. to Las Vegas,Detroit to Chicago,Boston to Washington,D.C.Then we'll see who gets there first. We'll even let the Tesla pack the extra long extension cord! Anybody else read the article in Car & Driver last year where the Tesla almost lost a long distance race with a Model T Ford?If the T had been more a more reliable example it would have been no contest.

Best advice-buy another kit.Chalk up this one to experience and start fresh. The finished model does tend to sit a bit high.Mine sits the same way(though my chassis lined up properly). If you want the front end lower flip the spindles upside down. It looks like you used Testor enamel for your red metalflake,That stuff is notorious for pulling away from panel lines and spraying on thicker than you think it does(even when trying to spray lightly).Next time try using one of the model lacquers.Tamiya sprays on thinner than Testor One Coat(not one coat). Try sanding the body before you apply the paint. This should help prevent the paint from pulling away from the panel lines.

First build - any suggestions?
ZTony8 replied to Ezuna's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm going to suggest the Monogram/Revell '32 Ford roadster-the 1/24 scale one (from the 60s-used to be the Li'l Deuce)not the 90s release in 1/25 scale. Why?It has fewer parts(and no separate chassis-the axles attach to the underbody),assembles easily, and is easy to paint. -
Bench Time = Therapy
ZTony8 replied to MsDano85gt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Model is building is therapeutic when I'm in the right frame of mind.Like most times in life, things go better when you WANT to do something rather than feeling like you MUST do it. -
Last Saturday I picked up a Revell McEwen dragster,a Tamiya Honda City GG, some Parts by Parks flathead engine air cleaners, and the latest Model Cars magazine.I like when the hobby store has a clearance sale.

The movers came this past Saturday.Things went smoothly, thank goodness.I went back on Sunday for what I thought was going to be a quick one time light load.WRONG!!!!!! It turned into a 5 hour, two load, cram the car to the sides adventure. That part is done. Now I have to assimilate the stuff into my house, tossing what I can't use and getting things ready for a large springtime yard sale.

Thieves broke in again and stole stuff from the house. The closing can't be soon enough for me.This is causing WAY too much stress in my life.
-
What may surprise is that I'm not too attached to the house, having moved out of it over 27 years ago.Yes,I have memories of living in it but most of my stuff came with me back then. The few things I still have there I'll bring home.

Pondering the AMT Supra 2JZ
ZTony8 replied to Jantrix's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
This thing is almost as bad as the Mitsubishi Eclipse of the same series. That one has the turbo hanging off the intake manifold and the exhaust pipe goes directly under the car to the front exhaust pipe, not to the turbo. -

What do you do with your kit boxes?
ZTony8 replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll keep one box of a particular type of model (F1 cars or street rods or a specific make, for example) and store my leftover parts from that subject in that box. Most boxes I just toss out unless it suits an odd sized model that will only go into that shape/size box. I recently obtained many boxes of a perfect size for storing most of my 1/24 and 1/25 scale built ups. They're the boxes that contained the parts for a recall campaign for Chevy Cruze power brake assist. They even contained a small bit of bubble wrap for packing!A Jo-Han Superbird is a tight fit in this box but anything shorter than that goes in quite well. -
My Mom's house is finally sold and now my daughter and I face clearing out the place. My Mom had accrued so much stuff in the 50+ years she lived there(yeah, she hoarded) that it's gonna take several weekends of sorting out what she wants to keep and what we can leave behind for the purchaser's guys to toss out. Then,of course,of the kept items, she wants to sort through them at my house.I can see already that my house is gonna be a defacto storage locker. We already know that the large items are to go to storage but the smaller things(dish sets, gloves, scarves, etc)are going to clog up my place until spring when I'm having a huge yard sale.I don't wish this task on anyone.Ugh!
