  1. Stop and say "Hi" to any of us D.A.A.M. guys(we'll be in our stylish gray and flamed logo shirts and hoodies) and maybe offer us something with caffeine in it or some Q-tips to prop open our eyelids.Because of a schedule conflict with another event at the college activity building that we use for our show we have to be there at 4 a.m. on Sunday for set up(instead of our usual Saturday afternoon) so we're gonna be a bunch of very tired people. BTW-no floor rights for this show only.
  2. Was the Matra the only one not produced?I have the Heller(Testor) Ferrari 512S and three of the M(a)cLaren M7A.
  3. I like the variety of your builds. I,too, seem to be building(or more properly, trying to build,)more than one kit a time. This goes all the way back to column I read in Car Model magazine back in the sixties.Written by Ben Millspaugh he suggested the very thing we're doing so you're always working on a model when there's down time on each one. He's also the one I blame for putting me on this path and why I now have about 1200 unfinished/unstarted kits!
  4. Wow!If someone considers me one of those pro/elite/experts they haven't seen my builds.I'm flattered.I can't post on here(dial up at home,no way here at work) so unless someone comes to our local club meetings or shows they can't see my feeble efforts at building good models. And jerk/stuck up?That's getting personal and I doubt anyone meeting me would think that of me.
  5. I tried to get my daughter interested in building when she was little but after doing two kits together she decided that it wasn't for her. Now,at 26,she has no hobbies except cooking. She does, however, wield a mean iPad.
  6. I know a fellow modeler who'll like this book.Me-not so much. It's the one subject of model cars that just doesn't hold much interest for me.Yes,I do have a couple of these type kits but if I trade or sell them off I won't be too sad.
  7. Gotta say that I would have passed on the VW kit if I didn't notice the pic on the box side of the EMPI style wheels and the mention of the optional parts-kinda like I always pass on the chance to buy the Scooby Doo van kit even at a discount.
  8. On a whim this past Saturday I picked up the Spiderman version of the Polar Lights VW Beetle from Hobby Lobby(thanks to the 40% off coupon).I can do without the silly stickers but the rest of the kit seems to be interesting. Two styles of seats, three styles of rims(one of them the old 60s type EMPI wheels).Looks like a cool revamp of the old Herbie kit.
  9. Overheard at Sylvania last month at the Moebius booth that the holdup in bringing this model (and the mid 70s Olds hardtop) is a question of tool ownership. The legal ownership and right of usage of the current tool holder has to be proven before Moebius can proceed with production.
  10. I had some no name enamel paint in very narrow jars that came with the old Revell/Gowland antique car gift sets(circa 1955) and the last time I checked them(about 2 years ago) some were still good. Now I'll have to dig them out and see if they're still usable.
  11. We've had this same debate in our area. Some of our contest organizers won't put out the signs for the tuner or donk or dub or lowrider classes. My feeling is,like Mr.Just, put the class signage out and if no one enters then save the prizes for another day.I think that for our area anyway(metro Detroit) that the tuners, lowriders, donks, and dubs should all be one class since participation in all those categories is relatively low.The possible exception would be the lowriders since that class fills mostly with slammed down full size domestic rides on larger than stock rims.
  12. You might want to try Tamiya TS 9 for your green. It's meant to be Team Lotus green and it looks like what's typically referred to as British Racing green.
  13. The sail panel(C pillar) area kinda looks like the Yenko roof extensions but with a flush back window. You might consider putting in some '67-'68 Camaro tail lights to really make people do a double take.
  14. My Dad was the family's only driver in 1957.I think Dad still had at that time our 1949 Buick Super sedan(the one with my "special seat" which was the rear seat armrest folded down. That way I could see over the back of the front seat and out the windshield when I sat on it.Imagine doing that today-the nosy busybodies would have you in court in 5 minutes). Early in 1957 Dad had also purchased the Old Bus,a 1927 Chevy woodie.I still have pics of it as he bought it,missing the rear of the roof and without tires. He partially restored it,traded it away in 1967,and I bought it back in 1982.I still have the hulk(it was damaged in an accident about 8 years ago)and I'm gonna restore it when I find some cash.
  15. I've seen something called "frost paint".I THINK it was at Hobby Lobby,it might even be a Testor product. It may be too opaque for your usage but it's worth a look.
  16. Make sure that both the paint AND the model are warm. I would advise using a mug/candle warmer(available at places like Michael's) for warming the rattle can.It warms more evenly(no,the can won't explode) and if you're using a partially empty can you don't just watch the can float in the water like a poor excuse for a boat and not get very warm.
  17. I have so many of my own glue bombs from the 60s and 70s that I don't need to hunt for anymore!
  18. Maybe I'm in the wrong part of the country but I can't recall seeing a regular Miata street driven around here by a female. But I've seen several Miatas over the years modified for autocrossing and co driven by women.Miatas are definitely not "chick cars". I saw a side view pic of the new Miata and it looked to be almost an exact copy of a Honda S2000.Not a bad benchmark but lacking in originality.
  19. '65 Olds F-85 coupe. My first car-Freedom! '71 Firebird Formula 455 H.O.-my 2nd (and,to date, most powerful)car.I never had that car floored it was so scary fast.In retrospect,I never should have bought that car.It was only 3 years old but it was already trashed when I got it(for $2400!). 1927 Chevy woodie.Bought by my Dad as a project in 1957.I adored that car as a little boy, especially the oogah horn.Traded away by Dad in 1967,I bought it back in 1982.About ten years ago it was wrecked by a Lincoln driver 15 minutes from my house while being towed back from Greenfield Village, having quit running. The bent carcass sits in my garage awaiting it's restoration. The Buick Wildcat II show car.My Dad was service manager at a Buick dealer in the early 60s when GM apparently used to loan out show cars to dealers for display.I got to sit in that car when it was displayed where Dad worked and for an 8 year car nut that was something very special. Federal Engineering Special Indy roadster.Like the Wildcat II,on display at the dealership where Dad worked.Got to sit in that one too. '63 Buick Riviera. The nine year old car nut in me thought the interior of that car was so cool, kinda like a jet airplane with that console shifter.Fifty plus years later I STILL want a first generation Riviera. 1952 Ferrari 340 Mexico.I was 6 years old when I saw a picture in a Fuller Brush catalog of the car driven by Phil Hill and Richie Ginther in the 1953 Carrera Panamericana. With it's long hood and all those decals, that car then defined "race car" to me.
  20. A reissue would be neat. The frame(and body work) is a different length than both the Garlits/Young American and the Ramchargers kits.Seeing how the Garlits frame was fudged in the reissue, would this kit be somehow altered given the different chassis length?
  21. I hope the windshield shape is able to be fixed.I saw the model at Sylvania and that's the first thing that hit me.It's too round from side to side and top to bottom, making the roof seem too much like a custom bubble top.I mentioned it to Dave and he knew of it and was hoping the tooling could be corrected.Fingers are crossed for that to happen. BTW,I took a (too) quick glance at the engine compartment and I believe the model is of a car with manual steering.
  22. I wonder how long it will take Tesla to offer the 3000 mile extension cord option. Pure electric cars are fine if you never need to drive further than the single charge range and can charge up again while you're away from the car for an extended period of time.Until the fact that the range is limited can be overcome(probably never) the pure electric will NEVER be anything but a short range commuter vehicle. And who needs a six figure priced car that you can't hop into and drive long distances without multi-hour layovers while the thing recharges?
  23. If you can't find a Badger hose track down a Snap On tool truck at a car dealership or repair facility.Blue Point is the brand of airbrush sold by them-but it won't be cheap.Nothing sold by Snap On is cheap.
  24. Yes,I have one.See my post in "Drag racing models". BTW,it has the Young American frame in it with the Garlits version chrome tree.I believe that the front axle had to be altered as the space between the axle mounting points on the frame is/was different than the original Garlits kit frame.
  25. If anyone is contemplating the purchase of the Wynnscharger kit re-release,here's a word of warning.Check the kit before you leave the store.I bought one, took it home, and discovered that the frame had more curves in it than the Tail of the Dragon road.I took the kit back to the store and we looked at the rest of the stock. All those frames were warped too.I ended up taking the frame from a Young American kit that he had in the store. It's not great but it's better than any of the Wynnscharger kits.
