  1. Nice work. Mine was restored when I first got back into the hobby years ago. With no kits available for kitbashing at the time I spliced on a windshield frame from a junk '69 Bonneville body. Strictly a five-footer and not my best work, but it considered it a good save at the time.
  2. The '68 convertible had the bubble top too; which required removing the windshield frame from the body. I did just that back in '68 and was kicking myself years later when restoring it.
  3. Beautiful!....and bonus points for preserving the original builder's interior.
  4. Well, we know the chassis and running gear bits were carried over to the '76. The odds that the '68 (or '73 or any other year) body bits survive are pretty slim. Back then we were buying lots of GTO's, Chargers, Vettes etc; cars like Impalas and Bonnevilles tended to sit on the shelves a little longer. Perhaps MPC didn't see much value in keeping body/interior tooling inserts around for year-old Impalas.....and the '76 is the only remnant we've seen for the last 40 years....so I would guess the '68 parts are long gone.
  5. Love this thread....good to see it's still going. I think I posted this one before in the Under Glass section....but whatever. A true "glue bomb" as opposed to a "restorable built-up", something I would have passed on if it was something more obtainable (and cheaper). A grungy AMT '68 Galaxy with sloppy candy green paint, worn out chrome, a butchered chassis and a glued-on vinyl top...it smelled bad too. My biggest challenge was modifying the too-large wheel openings on the body; something AMT messed up before the original builder got his hands on it. The rest was pretty routine. One of my favorites....just because it was so ugly when I picked it up.
  6. Steve; just wondering.....how are you going to work around the missing glass? I have a distressed promo with a cracked rear window.
  7. I've been able to find the whole set but I passed on buying the Duesenberg and the Packard; to me they just looked too homely to add to the stash, but this mockup looks kinda cool.
  8. Here's a built-up. The engine is a near carbon-copy of the 289 in the AMT 65-66 Mustang annuals with Cal Custom-type air cleaners/scoops. Out of the box the kit looks so-so, but swap the wheels out and lower it a tad and it looks much better.
  9. In the mid-90's I was buying up various Johan USA Oldies and re-issues if the price was reasonable thinking the writing was on the wall and I might regret it later if I didn't pick them up. I recall one guy laughing his head off at me when I picked up the '63 Fury for about 20 bucks at a swap meet....he told me that ugly kit with the equally ugly box art would never be worth anything.
  10. Added a nice little AMT '68 Mustang to the fleet in a trade. I have plans for a 428CJ using an MPC '69 as a donor.
  11. Agreed....sort of. I've gone through dozens of sheets of BMF through the years (both "regular" and "ultra bright") and spent a couple of years experimenting with Molotow. I find Molotow handy for detailing interior bits (horn rings/dashboard trim etc) where they won't be handled...decanted only; forget the pens. My old go-to was decanted silver from a Tamiya paint pen (don't knock it until you've tried it). Molotow can also be useful for touching up MINOR blemishes on chrome bits. Exterior trim? The worst sheet of BMF is still much better than Molotow in my opinion.
  12. I used a piece of insulated wire....easy unless you want to go nuts with mounting hardware etc.
  13. Agreed...a definite improvement. It doesn't hurt to move the rear ahead about 1mm as well. (the green car is vintage, not the reissue)
  14. The overhead lights are newly tooled parts. Various derelict ambulance pics found on the 'net were used for inspiration. I believe the boards are the same ones as used in the '65 Chevelle.
  15. So sinister-looking! Beautiful transformation.
  16. So many variables when when comparing paint jobs on the 'net..... This is Testors Nassau Blue clearcoated with Wet Look Clear. Note the difference between the indoor/outdoor pic. Same kit/camera/settings etc. Looks closer to Snake's example. There should be some Testors Nassau Blue out there somewhere if you keep searching.
  17. Love that RR Snake, a perfect period piece. That paint has got to be AMT Surf Green lacquer, or a perfect match. It was one of my favorite colors back in the day; AMT's version of Pontiac Verdoro Green. I sooo miss those AMT lacquers!
  18. I just test-fitted a USA Oldies '64 hood to my '63 annual. If you trim the triangular mounting tabs/hinges on the rear corners of the Oldies hood (or just cut them off) it's a perfect fit on the '63. It's virtually the same part. I'm sure the glass is a perfect fit as well, but I wasn't prepared to disassemble the '63.
  19. An old-school custom from back in the day when the only way to do it was to chop the AMT kit. Paint is custom-mixed Testors enamels to come up with a metallic cherry cola shade.
  20. That does NOT look like it was built by someone just getting back into the hobby. Beautiful job!
  21. That's a tough question to answer when looking at a test shot. Test shots typically contain all parts for all versions/variations of a particular kit, including parts in some instances that might be blocked off on production kits. Without saying any more, I don't think you'll be disappointed, and I'll definitely be picking up more than one of these when they're released.
  22. I believe all of the trailer parts in my pic are from the "original" section, the same pieces I think are found in the '62 Buick kit (probably the original '63 Nova too-I don't have one of those). It's hard to be 100% sure as after test-fitting various parts for various versions the parts and sprues are all seperated. There are no flat fenders (as found in the '61 Buick trailer) present. Correct re the tires. Every time I dig into this bag of parts I'm really pumped about this one and can't wait to get a production kit.
  23. Here's the upcoming Nova trailer, just in case anyone out there is still confused..
