I think the multitude of categories is a direct result of people not using the "tag" function (which I am guilty of). If ALL members were using the tags there wouldn't be a need to have so many separate categories. So maybe the board can be set up so that it forces the poster to apply at least 1 tag to their thread when they start one. It should be able to be done because it already won't allow you to start a thread without having a title, so the code exists. I think a "refine" and "combine" process needs to be applied to the current categories and sub-categories on the board. Renaming, re-contenting and consolidating would make the board more intuitive to use, and foster more cross-pollination. It would allow better sharing of ideas, techniques and in turn would make for a stronger hobby overall. Just because someone is building a model based on a die-cast doesn't mean there's not something to learn from what they're building. Maybe they've introduced a better paint technique that could help make my model better. But because that thread is currently housed in the resin/diecast category, i might have missed it. I'm not advocating to combine everything into one big General category, but i think it's time to make some refinements that make sense.

1/25 resin turbine engine
Mr. Metallic replied to cobraman's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Anyone have pics of one of these built up? -
Thanks for the mock up. I was assuming that this body was going to suffer from the same problem I found on a recently acquired 5W Switchers body. I realize the tooling is different for the roadster/5W and this SD/Sedan/Phaeton tooling, but since they were designed at the same time and with the same methodology(Switchers) Here's the issue. It is very narrow at the cowl, but fine at the rear of the roof when compared to the Revell body. Switchers body on the left, Revell on the right Anyway, I'm glad that the SD body doesn't have this issue.

Thanks for the reminder. I grabbed some stuff from Maple Leaf Modelworks and the sweet dragster front wheels and tires that someone from this board was offering. -

Replicas and Miniatures of Md has a lot of flattie/ford banger speed parts. Click https://public.fotki.com/crstan/replican-and-miniat/replicas-and-miniat/ to see some of the parts. Kong heads are occasionally available from from someone on eBay, same seller does a Frenzel supercharger setup for the flattie. -
AMT '60 Chevy Custom Fleetside
Mr. Metallic replied to MachinistMark's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
And for those asking why the streamliner shell isn't with the kart, the answer is, it simply wouldn't fit in the bed of this shortbed 60. It overhangs the longbed 63 Ford it came with... If it's true that they had to make some new tooling to recreate the go-kart, that they will stretch those dollars further by putting the streamliner kart in a different kit in the future. But, having the standard kart is great, and I get a 60 chevy pickup with it -
Cool build of a fun kit. I really dig the paint job.

Pretty cool. You had a theme in mind and you ran with it. I dig it

The topic did come back, but is now locked after going further down the rabbit hole. The things admins have to put up with sometimes. Thank you for what you do At least the important 3D printing stuff is still visible. Maybe someone can start a new topic on it where it is free to expand into a truly worthwhile topic without the chaotic baggage attached to it. -
Man, this came out great. Your color combo is beautiful. And the way you did the rear nerf, very cool. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Thanks for sharing this build Tim. it has aged very well, both thematically and construction wise. Speaking of your column, have you ever given thought to putting them together in a book? Or at least making them available online in a Fotki album. Since R+C is now defunct () I would think the hurdles with the publisher would be minimal.

Very cool. I really enjoy the little details you added. Almost makes me want to pull out my ModelMartin Mercury speedster. I have the same powerplant selected when I get around to it. -

Man, this came out great. Thank for taking us along for the ride. i especially like the scratchbuilt x-member and intake setup Can you share your source for the Ni-Chrome tubing, please? -
Depends on your definition of "pretty old". This is not the early 60's double kit tooling of the Ala Kart(recently reissued as the Mod Rod), but the early 2000's all new tooling Ala Kart. So, you're looking at a kit that was designed, manufactured and built within the last 15 years or so. Some parts of the kit are really nice(wheels and tires), and others are a downgrade when compared to the old tooling (underscale engine, some body components and contours) However, don't let that stop you from rebuilding it. It's just plastic. Have fun with it.

That rear view just sells the job you did on the chop. Very nicely proportioned. I'm looking forward to following along.

Fires destroy 2 resin casters
Mr. Metallic replied to Gramps46's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
The loss of life and property is staggering, and very sad. I took one of the best drives I've ever taken when I was in LA on business a few years ago. Drove through Topanga Canyon on 27 down to the coast and then took the PCH through Malibu. Beautiful area, great curvy road to drive on. Hope to make it back there someday, but now the landscape will be quite different for sure, Thoughts are with those that have been affected by this. -

The problem is, many of us have learned to not take the bait. But there are a ton of users that haven't, which starts the ball rolling. And then we have to jump in to stop the spread of misinformation and falsehoods, for the sake of the community as a whole. -

AMT and MPC Please Put Out Significant Kits
Mr. Metallic replied to regular guy's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
What you call "dreck" is what other people may call their Holy Grails. Just because it's not exactly what YOU want, in the exact format YOU want it in doesn't mean that it's worthless to the hobby. -
AMT and MPC Please Put Out Significant Kits
Mr. Metallic replied to regular guy's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Ok, this could prove useful, in theory. Not as you describe as AMT getting into essentially being a retailer for a resin company. But, it could prove useful in resurrecting incomplete kits in their inventory, on a small scale. There is a precedent for this already. Back in the late 90's Revell wanted to reissue the Orange Crate 32 Ford, but had modified the tooling for the hood in the 80's and didn't want to spend the money to retool it back to original. So, they had a resin caster cast up the hood for them, and they included it in the kit. Theoretically, Round2 could do something similar if they had tooling that only had a couple missing parts. Anything beyond that would become cost prohibitive. Here's the contents of the Orange Crate, showing the resin hood (which was actually brought back in plastic form for the most recent issue) Now, why do I get the sneaking suspicion that by responding to this it's going to send it spiraling off into a new craziness?
