Ha! You know you want to! ? Today I emptied out my big display case. Now that I practiced drilling holes and adding shelves to the smaller case, I’m confident enough to attack the big case... Last photo of it with three shelves! I will be adding one between each existing shelf for a total of six shelves, doubling my capacity. I’m also going to cover up the mirror to make it easier to take photos without the 3D effect.

Rare Kits... prices.
Tom Geiger replied to Brutalform's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The perfect storm. The right buyers logged into eBay at the right time, duked it out, and a sale is made! And for every old guy screaming that kits should still be two bucks, there’s another guy who can spend a thousand bucks and not miss it! Right now people are getting their stimulus checks and tax refunds. Walmart will be sold out of big screen TVs and some folks will spend stupid money on eBay! -

Great start! This is one of my favorite old kits to play with! -
Neat nostalgic build. It’s one of those kits everyone will say they need to build one someday. Which is why I built mine for the 24 Hour Build the first year I joined in!

Okay, I’ll play.. you’ve added a new term of “rebuild” and I’ll buy that. Restoration - Returned to its original state, using period parts. Rebuild - Old built ups, significantly changed, with parts from any sources. Parts Box Build - A new build, created from parts from varied sources. Howz dat? -
Rare Kits... prices.

Value is a funny thing. Last night I was listening to a podcast of stamp collectors. The conversion pretty much said that in today’s market, the prices listed in catalogs are obsolete as soon as they are printed. They said a more valid value would be a calculator that analyzed web prices realized in real time, and the need for someone to develop it. I’ve noticed prices going wild on old annuals.. recently saw 1968-9 era Chevys sold for over $300. There seems to be a lot of money out there. But consider that the market is driven by new kit prices. 30 years ago I remember paying $6 for a new kit of the AMT 55 Chevy Cameo. I have a lot of old kits I bought used at shows from back in that era for $3-5 a kit. So think of the MSRP of a new AMT / Revell kit at $30 or more, and you can buy a Johan kit on eBay for $60, that’s not a bad price for something someone has stored away for 30 years.. as in, wouldn’t you trade two recent kits from your collection for a Johan you want? -
FSM - The Automotive Content Thread
Tom Geiger replied to vincen47's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It would’ve made sense to leave it up and keep the door open to reviving the title at a later date.. either in print or digital. I don’t know what the fallout is from canceling the magazine.. how many people crossed over to FSM, and how many walked away. Seems to me they abandoned an entire market segment! -

There’s a fine line in there somewhere... my Jeep started out as a glue bomb some kit must’ve built. It was in my junk / parts box. So is it a resto or parts box build.. or both? -
That classic Citroen single spoke steering wheel would look great in a street rod! I remember being in Paris as a kid.. maybe 1970 and the taxi cabs were all Citroen DS cars.. I saw that wheel for the first time and was surprised it worked to steer the car!

I pretty much did that with my 53 Studebaker... had just finished the body, fumbled it and my reflex was to capture it between my arms and chest.. crunch A pillars! -

Agreed! The Jeep I just finished was all from my parts box. With my run of Jeeps someone asked if I was Jeeped out at this point... but just last night I was wondering if my spare Dodge D50 / Mitsubishi chassis would fit under one... -

Thanks! That’s pretty much what my box looked like! I even have a red and black body still in the box! Let’s see what you can do! -
I can like it and wouldn’t mind that in my garage.

how many built models?
Tom Geiger replied to Paul Payne's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Just going by my Fotki albums, count around 60 finished models. There are also around 40 albums of work in progress.. aka “The Shelf of Doom”. I have been working towards finishing some of these, but there are vehicles there that never will be completed. I also have “The Olde Kustom Kollection” of significant old customs from the early days of modeling. I just put 30 of these into their own showcase, but there are many more.. probably double, so put this collection at 60 pieces. I also have better than 100 more displayable old built ups of old kits that may get complete build ups someday, but are cool in their own right so no sense in storing them away. I just invested $300 in new glass shelves for two of my three display cases to double their capacities. My third case has wood shelves and I’ll eventually do the same to it. -

Very cool mods! Especially like light treatment, both front and tail!
