So this is definition of PRO BUILT?
Tom Geiger replied to Oldcarfan27's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My big problem with this stuff is that when we tell people we build models, this is their reference point. -

You got me thinking about the missing character line below the side windows. I have an old built up of a coupe sitting right above my bench and never noticed. Now you have me obsessed! ? I’m thinking Monogram left it off because the kit was the coupe / convertible combo and the convertible didn’t have that detail?

Palmer model kit history?

EBay gives sellers a bunch of free listings every month. So it costs them nothing to go trolling for suckers! -
New Dodge build

Ha! Odder the better. I think that would sell as resin. -
I remember reading that the track noses were made by taking two 1950s pickup rear fenders, and welding them bed side to bed side. Cut grill hole in center, cut front half off to use. I tried that with fenders from AMT 53 Ford pickup and it worked decent, only I couldn’t get GM my grill shape to my liking.. mine kept looking like rejects from the movie Cars.

Palmer model kit history?
Tom Geiger replied to Oldcarfan27's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yes, back 20 years ago I was buying Palmers for the box art and was paying $5 to $10 apiece for them. Lately the asking prices have become costly, I guess people are collecting them for the nostalgia aspect, much like collecting old toys. -
Palmer model kit history?
Tom Geiger replied to Oldcarfan27's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This thread popped up in the links at the bottom of my iPhone page, so I’m bringing it to the top! As said Palmer kits were sold at dime stores, pharmacies and luncheonettes. They were distributed to them through jobbers. Back when I was about 10, I’d often stay at my grandmother’s house because she had a color TV. She loved to play bingo and would drag me along. To placate me, she’d give me a few dollars and send me to the luncheonette across the street from the church. There I would buy a YooHoo chocolate drink, a pack of Drake’s Yodels, a Palmer kit and a tube of glue. I knew the kit was trash, but hey it was free. Then I proceeded to make a glue mess on the bingo tables. I’m sure the church ladies loved me! -

Early in this thread I had mentioned the location of the Pyro facility, but had not done the research. Above is a drawing from a Pyro kit showing “Pyro Park”. Here’s a view of the facility in 1954. The site was built in Union NJ which was sparsely populated at that time. And by 1979.. And here we are today. The plant is long gone and a Home Depot occupies the site today. See the up an sprawl that took place! Union is a very dense place today.

Detail Radiators
Tom Geiger replied to Greg Cruickshank's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Of course detailing depends on what kind of models you build. I can say not to forget an overflow tube, whether there is an overflow tank or it just lets out onto the ground at the bottom edge of the radiator. Most kits omit this detail. Since most of my models are well used, I will often use a child’s water color set green to simulate coolant. Whether it’s a little spot near the top hose or using it as a wash into the mesh to give it some depth. -
The sign looks fine! Apply the decal and be done with it! Overall you did a very nice job on this classic kit! The car is orange, so I wouldn’t fret about not painting it yellow. The only comments I can make, would be to add some dark tone on the inside of the exhaust tubes to simulate depth. And black wash the springs to offset the chrome spring.

Opinions on upgrading rare vintage cars
Tom Geiger replied to Mike Young's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
My 63 Valiant modified stocker. I had one guy shaming me for “ruining” a classic kit! Then I pulled up this photo on my phone.... I don’t think anyone could dispute that I improved it! -
I haven’t started mine yet! That’s the photo from the eBay ad! I know I have at least one of the Tamiya kits down in the hoard.

Reporting in from the NJ / Philadelphia area, one of the areas hard hit by the virus. We are doing okay, doing a weekly grocery and beer run. We are not being paid and are living on savings. Got our first pizza take out this past week, which was an amazing treat! I barbecue a lot, and with fresh chicken wings out of stock, I’ll be cooking up Buffalo Chicken Legs tonight. Here’s how we pick up a pizza.. our favorite Rocco’s Sicilian Special pizza! For the two of us it lasts a few days, thus a good purchase. People pull up into a parking space, which face the building. If there is a patron at the window you wait your turn in your car. Upon your turn, you approach the window. They’ve got this set up like a bank drive up window. Like most businesses around here they’re not taking cash, only cards. You speak into the microphone and let them know which order you are picking up. The window opens and you put your card into a tray. The masked girl inside processes your card, no signature or PIN required, then opens the window and your order is sitting inside the box with your card on top. A good no contact solution. Anyway, I’m getting a bit concerned about people. I posted photos of the deserted highway here the first week. Since I’m only out once or twice a week I notice change. This week there were a lot of cars. In the grocery store and Walmart it was more crowded. People have to wear masks by law here, but they’re showing up as entire families with small kids in the cart. People are getting sloppy. People are getting antsy and seeing some minor things opening up as a sign they can do what they want. We got invited to a Memorial Day party at my wife’s friend’s house. They’ve decided that if NJ beaches are opening up, they could have a party! Now the clincher.. their daughter who lives there is a nurse attending to Coronavirus patients! We aren’t going! From our perspective, we’ve been holed up now for two months and don’t want it to be for nothing! We can do this another month or so if it means we won’t be doing this in again in the fall and winter!
