How high will it go?
Tom Geiger replied to Brutalform's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Good points Mike! Yes, Sunday night was the magic time! Everyone was supposed to be home, and resting up for Monday! I had a $1000-2000 a month business going back in 1999 selling old car brochures. I always finished my auctions on Sunday evening. There was no invoicing feature on eBay back then, so I'd email my invoices to buyers as the auctions ended. Back then there were no eBay IDs, your email address appeared on every auction and bid! One of my favorite things to do back then was cruise auctions at 6am on Christmas morning. I got some smokin' deals then! I would still end auctions on Sunday night today, but I don't think it's as important as people are using sniping tools. Also, there was no Paypal, so everyone paid through the mails, either check or money order. Many sellers only took USPS money orders. Some would wait for checks to clear. I had my business set so my median sale was $10. I would just ship upon receipt, and not worry about checks clearing. I figured all the time I saved each week would surely cover the loss of one check. And ya know, I never had a bad payment. My formula was to end auctions on Sunday and invoice. Payments would start trickling in by Tuesday. My auctions all stated that I mailed every Saturday morning for all payments received by Friday. I had a box that my wife put the eBay payments in all week. Every Friday evening, I'd set up a folding table and do my packing and shipping. Since it was all brochures, I would buy photo mailers by the case, so packing and shipping went very quick. I could easily get out 50 orders a week. As time went on eBay got more popular and there were more sellers. The prices realized fell dramatically as well as the sell through rate. Early on, you could do no wrong! Everything sold! It soon wasn't worthwhile to sell anymore. The final blow for me was when they separated out eBay Motors and my third party listing tool no longer worked! Ah for the good ole days! -
Yup, that's a survivor! Good call to keep it as is. Would be nice if there was a way to fix the front edge of the decals on either side though.

I saw one short clip of what looked like a nice living room with white couches. A few inches of water sloshing on the floor, but the staircase leading up to this completely flooded to that level. Waves were crashing into the sliding glass door... and they said this was on the second floor!

I was watching it end, just happened to be checking my mail. Funny thing, NO SNIPERS! That last bid was visible for at least a day. But the '64 Rambler American and '66 Rambler American Convertible the same seller had up both were sniped in the last 10 seconds, by different people! -

Yea, the robot would testify at your trial by playing back it's video of you knocking it over!

Stop and Shop / Giant Supermarket chain... we have them too. My high tech client on the west coast has these R2D2 guys screaming around the buildings, something to do with artificial reality, you have to watch where you step!

I'd be the sucker to rebuild it too! I've had a few service people notice my modeling. I had a Verizon guy in my home office trouble shooting my router. My big show case is in there. He was looking at the models when I came into the room, he seemed a bit embarrassed since they are trained not to notice anything in customer's homes. I assured him it was cool to look! He thought they were all diecast and was blown away when I told him they were all kits I had built. I also had the appliance repairman notice when he walked by the open door to my workshop. He as into it and said he was thinking of getting into building models again.

Sometimes we do these things just to see if we can! I like it.

Neat trick on that trim! Can't wait to see it finished!

They put Foose pickups on clearance? Fools! I would've bought all they had. I love that chassis.

Very cool Charlie! Thanks for showing me! See you soon! -
I missed meeting Ed Roth by months! He was scheduled to be at GSL and died right before the show. ☹️

Possible eBay listing value help needed
Tom Geiger replied to DPNM's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
eBay kinda sorts out the value for you. I've had things that I thought were nothing special that went ballistic and sold for a good price. What you do need to do is take a bunch of decent photos, and describe the lot completely and accurately. One fuzzy photo of a bed with a little blob on it (I guess that's a model) will cost you dearly! Same with a bad description, or the old "I have no idea if it's complete". People will decide it's definitely not complete and that's your cop out. There is the seasonal factor too. Summer is slow. We are coming into the best market right now, fall to Christmas! Great time to list stuff! Put an accurate postage charge on it. Too high and people will factor it into their bids. Then when they receive the package with $10 postage on it, when you charged them $15 they will squawk and hurt your feedback. And take photos of everything, even if you don't post them all. That's to protect yourself against scammers who will take a part out and try to return it. Or they'll claim parts are missing and file with eBay and Paypal for a refund. They'll want to keep the parts they stole and either return the kit on your postage or will demand a refund and to keep the kit. Yea, they are out there! -

If it doesn’t work try it on chrome and paint! -
Many years ago we were on St Thomas and there was rumor of an impending hurricane. My wife got scared and asked a hotel guy what we’s do. He replied that our hotel was the area hurricane shelter and we’d be fine. The storm went out to sea and the worse thing that happened was the water got rough. So I sat on the beach watching women lose their bikini tops! ?

People don't understand their business. They purchased all of that tooling not all that long ago with the intent of using it. They are in the nostalgia business, bringing back the old kits we all remember. The comments that the tooling is "bought and paid for" isn't correct. These are new owners of that tooling and no doubt have debt against it that needs to be paid. So that tooling must be worked. It gives us another chance to appease the model gods by getting a build right this time as adults!

You literally found it at the landfill? Details! Was there anything else with it?
