62 Comet detailed frame
Maindrian Pace replied to thatz4u's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the Cougar will be too narrow, but the wheelbase may be close. Suspension is close, may be a good choice with work. The Fairlane has a very different front suspension setup, the new '65 Comet may well be the closest if Moebius got it right, and they usually do. -
Very nice work. The 4x4 conversion is a natural, and the 351 engine looks just right in the engine bay, you'd never see the scale difference if there even is one. A great looking truck that came together like it was meant to be.

This is a joke, right?

It's a kid, building a model and making a video. Problem? -
(Update)'60 Falcon Gasser "Copperhead" is finished.
Maindrian Pace replied to Geno's topic in Diecast Corner
Great start, I have the same diecast (bought new some 25 years ago) and it is a bit boring and the wrong color white. I've often thought about "fixing" it, so will be interesting to see where this one goes. -
Between this and the '66 Suburban, Revell is just killin' it with the long-awaited vintage SUVs.

1968 Shelby Green Hornet-----Update! 8/4/18
Maindrian Pace replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Amazing. The only other 1:25 roll-down windows I can recall were on an '80s Mustang convertible built in the '80s. (perhaps by Jairus W.) Nothing so elaborate, I think it was thread wrapped around a sandpaper drum IIRC. -
Mustang Upgrade
Maindrian Pace replied to 935k3's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
NASCAR cars aren't exactly pretty, and top fuel funnys and dragsters aren't in the Museum of Modern Art either. Everything for it's given purpose, and that Mustang's is to be partially obscured by clouds of tire smoke for entire videos. -
Stunning, no other word. It's satisfying to see these modern, high-skill builds applied to vintage AMT, MPC, and Johan kits in a way that you never saw them built before. Who knew they could be so nice?

eBay for Parts, What Do You Buy?
Maindrian Pace replied to Skip's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Praise be the breakers! I buy from a guy who breaks new kits, like 2 sets of 4x4 frame and running gear from the AMT Ford F-350 Firestone kits and a Revell Torino 429 CJ engine, and from another guy who breaks old kits, like a Johan Comet body. And neither of them are He Who's Name Shall Not Be Mentioned. I had a Johan Comet pro stock kit that was 100% complete except for the body, and that kit wouldn't have been much good without it. So I found that seller on ebay, and bought the body for something like 16 bucks. It's molded in weird Johan green instead of weird Johan blueish-green, but now it's complete! -

Fixing a 1960 promo body
Maindrian Pace replied to junkyardjeff's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I've got one just like it. Every single '60 Falcon promo turned into a banana. They were horrible. A resin body and a '61 promo chassis or cut down Ranchero chassis fixes them up pretty well, though. -

1968 Shelby Green Hornet-----Update! 8/4/18
Maindrian Pace replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Very nice work, Bill. Here's a '67 coupe I did around 25 years ago. It's basically the same type of conversion, except I trimmed and re-shaped the tops of the fastback 1/4 panels instead of using the '66 top sections. I should have done it that way, it would have been less work. Same work on the roof. -
1982 Dodge Dip - Louisiana State Police - Custom Parts
Maindrian Pace replied to DEL's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Phoenix had them too, around '84. They were pretty bad, even by '80s standards, almost anything could outrun them with their little 2.8 V6's. It was hard for the cops to look tough driving around in Celebrities with 13 inch wheels. They didn't last for more than two years. -
Quite likely. Here's a story for you: We had a customer that ordered Verlinden and other WWII diorama products from us periodically. We were happy to get the stuff for him, it was always a special order item and no other hobby shop wanted to go through the trouble of going through an off-the-map distributor. So we ordered this bombed-out urban scene for him, a corner of a building in some unnamed city in Europe, street piled with rubble, and it's basically a box of plaster castings of bombed, blasted, and broken scale brick and other debris. So he carefully goes through each piece, and he finds one small slab of building that got broken in shipment. He goes 3/4 psycho, blaming us, Verlinden, the distributor, the shipper, you name it. Now, 1) it could have been glued back together in seconds, and 2) as this was a scene of chaos and destruction, it wouldn't have made any difference, and nobody would have known any differently. So another customer, a WWII armor modeler, comes up to see what the commotion is all about. He asks the guy if he will take the product. The guy says "No!" So he says, "add it to my pile, it will be a perfect backdrop for my Comet, (British tank) but it will have to be broken up a bit more." The first guy just shook his head and left.
