Wrecker / Rollback 'steel' cable ?
espo replied to 57peppershaker's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Check out the jewelry department at Hobby Lobby or JoAnn's Fabrics. I have gotten vary fine chains there that I used for the tail gate on a pick-up. Something like that may work. -
Starsky Hutch Torino Revamp for 2016 TV Show - UPDATE 7/13 - Finished
espo replied to RestoModGuy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I'd be inclined to leave it as is, just add the chrome window moldings and call it done.- 36 replies

It looks great. I wouldn't have known what it was except for the Wheeler Dealer show were they restored one.

Another great Ford build. I know how much you love these cars so I just never thought I'd see you distress one. It could be the before and after restoration.

Starsky Hutch Torino Revamp for 2016 TV Show - UPDATE 7/13 - Finished
espo replied to RestoModGuy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I think your stripe job is much better looking. I also was never a fan of this model Ford except when Starsky would slide over the hood and jump in. All that was fun at the time, but the proportions of the windows always seemed off to me. I think the large "C" pillar made that portion of the roof and the body look to heavy. If I were the one designing the roof line the rear quarter window would have extended further back toward the rear window opening. This would have made the car "lighter" looking and would have eliminated a very large blind spot for the driver if he turned to look over his right shoulder. While still a large stripe by putting just the small line in the middle I think it greatly enhances the appearance.- 36 replies

While Model Master Black is a great paint, Tamiya TS-14 Black is again available and my experience has been better using Tamiya. I think you would be happy with either.

Interesting color combo. The low windshield and head rest looks like a road racer.

I have never tried the super glue technique before. What I have found to work best for small areas such as this is to shape some pieces of the parts tree since it is the same plastic as the body, and use them as fillers for the vents. Sand the area until it looks flat and then use as little body filler as possible to cover any voids left from the filler parts. This should minimize any ghosting from where the body and filler parts meet. .

I missed this year due to a prior commitment. I have both shown models and had a couple of tables for years and really hatted missing this year, I was hopping someone would post pictures.

Revell '57 Ford Paxton question
espo replied to Jantrix's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
As mentioned the super charger housing has to be lubricated. The crankcase oil was used in the early years. Many versions of this super charger used a sealed very small reservoir in later years. -
Questions on building trailer axles
espo replied to Nova-ss's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
You might try using aluminum tubing for the axles. This would give you the strength you are looking for and they can be bent as needed. Another alternative would be brass rod as it would be easier to bend into shape, just not quite as strong as tubing. -
I like this build a lot. While I'm not a fan of those wheels, the way you painted them makes them look perfect.

Great looking build. It looks even better since you redid the suspension.

Turned out great especially since its a very basic kit going in. Are you going to add the trim around the windows or is that the look you're going for ?
-
Beautiful build. I've been trying to find this kit locally and your already posting a finished build. I have the Tamiya TS-11 Maroon already, but now I may look at either gray or the dark blue. Any build problems ?
-
Beautiful build, well thought out with a different engine and other details.
-
Great looking build. Well detailed chassis, really like the exhaust tips. What interior did you use ? It looks like it should have been that way from the factory.
-
I agree with you on the copper color. I built this kit some time ago and your blue is very close to the color I used. I'll enjoy watching your build.

Looks like an interesting build and its nice to have a reference car so handy. I like to see restored cars such as your own. Its good to see such low production models like this preserved.

Best Ford 390 engine
espo replied to Perspect Scale Modelworks's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I think you might find the best Ford FE block engine in the AMT '60 Ford Starliner. In the kit its is presented as a 352 cu in I believe. The 390 engine would look the same, and the '60 kit offers several different carb. set ups. -
You might check out Model Master FS33722 Modern Desert Sand, Tamiya TS-68 Wooden Deck Tan or TS-46 Light Sand. These are lighter shades but with a little wash on the interior the look very convincing.

Hubcap identification
espo replied to Perspect Scale Modelworks's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
In "real life" there were companies in the '50's that made knock offs of the Olds Fiesta and Dodge Lancer hub caps in both 14" and 15" so that any car could have a set. These hub caps were stolen more often then than "mag" wheels are today. -
AMT 57 Chrysler 300 C question
espo replied to thatz4u's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It can be lowered by altering the front spindles and creating lowering blocks between the rear leaf springs and the differential. -
