69 COPO Nova (UPDATE - COMPLETED & UNDER GLASS 1-5-17)
espo replied to lghtngyello03's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Your detailing is really bringing the engine bay to life. -
You are off to a good start. Don't feel embarrassed, we all started in much the same way.
-
Simply amazing ! Looking forward to how you'll finish the outside of the canopy hinges. It doesn't look like it would be removable for painting. I'm sure you have that already figured out.
-
Thanks, I'll have to go with the wife the next time she goes for supplies.

Great looking build. I really like the interior. Is that the Greenwood kit or a reissue of it ?
-
Looks like fun, and great that you get to do it with your son. Some time ago I melded a '56 Chevy with a Greenwood Corvette. I did pretty much what the real guys do and grafted the frames together. I did the back half with the Corvette chassis meeting the 210 chassis at the rear kick up and rejoined the 210 chassis after the rear independent suspension. In the front I just mounted the Corvette cross member and suspension, this made it a lot easier to use the big block from the Greenwood kit. I also used the wheels and tires from that kit. Hope this helps in what you're trying to accomplish here. I also used the Corvette exhaust with the original kits exhaust. The Corvette cross member at the front of the rear suspension is a perfect place to hide where the two systems are joined.

That is beautiful. I like all of the extra effort on the detailing of the engine. The interior seat treatment looks perfect. Where did you get the flower patterns ? Like you , when I built mine I did the "wood" just using similar paint techniques. I used Tamiya clear yellow on the lighter parts, and their clear orange on the inner door parts. I never could get the decals to work for me. Yours looks like it is on air bag suspension. I really like how it looks.

Bench cleaning
espo replied to Modelbuilder Mark's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I always clean the work area after every build. Sometimes I have to do a light cleaning during the build when the area starts getting to cluttered. It seems as thought I start to run out of desk top as I get thru the mockup and modification stages. I try to keep tools picked up as I go, but never seems to be 100%. Before starting the final assembly I always wipe down the area to keep any sanding dust and bits and pieces from getting on the finished body and interior. I'm not the cleanest builder here, but it does look like some of the others here are in an operating room instead of model building desk. -
Anyone with access to a 1983-1986 T-Bird?
espo replied to robdebie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That may be why NASCAR allowed the change to the bodies since the production cars were going to the composite type lights. -
I like what you did with the grill, and the panel painting looks perfect on this.

This has kind of a menacing look with the black trim and wheels. Very good chassis detail considering what the kit has to work with. The exhaust outlets look like they would burn down anyone who got to close. I like the attitude of its appearance.

Rob. I forgot, but I have a poster that I received in 1991 that shows the side view of the Championship cars for the years 1971 thru 1990. I was fortunate enough to have Dale Earnhardt sign it when I meet him in 1991. The picture of Bill Elliot's 1988 Championship car does look like the headlight buckets are open, but the 1989 Pontiac of Rusty Wallace shows the smooth fender and decal headlights that I mentioned. The Chevrolet Lumina that Dale won the 1990 Championship with is also smooth. This leads me to believe that Bill's car from 1988 was possibly the last year for that style of headlight. Good to see someone was able to supply you with an accurate measurement of the headlights. -
Nice looking build. All the best in your new profession and keep yourself safe.

You seem quite knowledgeable of the subject and NASCAR in general. You might try NASCAR .com and that would get you into current information and then that may offer a way to get more specific information. If you Google Bill Elliot that might offer some options to find sights with additional info. The only real relationship between the production car and the race car had to do with a templet that checked the alignment of the grill, hood, roof and rear deck lid. I just do not recall the different Ford teams of the time. If you can find out who Elliot drove for at that time they may have a web sight were you could get the info you need. I think he was an independent driver /owner at the time. I remember his brother was his crew chief for most of his early career and I believe that his father had a Ford dealership in the south and that was how he got started in racing. Again I'm not 100% sure , but that is what I recall. -

The picture looks like the Bill Elliot T-Bird (Million Dollar Bill from Dawsonville) and at that time they may have been required to have a headlight shape just like a production car. In later years the rules changed and they were allowed to have smooth body work in that area and use a decal to represent the headlamps. Almost every year NASCAR would and still does change what they will allow as far as body aero modifications. It will be interesting to watch your build. Are going for a specific year and drivers car ? There are many here far more knowledgeable than I on specific years and rules. I'm sure if you ask they would be more than happy to assist if needed. -
Best type of brush to use with acrylics ?
espo replied to Goodwrench3's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have been using brushes made by the Atlas Brush Co. that I buy at the local hobby store. What I do is get several sets of 2-3 in different sizes and each set is used for a specific brand of paint. The acrylic brushes are first cleaned in water followed by that brands thinner or brush cleaner. The Model Master lacquer brushes are cleaned directly with their Lacquer Thinner. Lacquer does not play nice with water and will turn into a mess. I may be over doing this, but I also have not had any problems since I started doing it this way. -
I cheat and buy after market distributors. But there are many here who drill out the kits plastic distributor and glue wires in place and others that have used small diameter tubing for the distributor drive shafts and a second larger diameter for the distributor head and cap.

Beautifully detailed interior and engine. Now Alfa is going to send us the civilian version next year. These a very good looking sedans.
-
Beautiful builds, and I really like the setting. Don't see 928's very often.
-
Now that's a Hot Rod, not a Billet Money Pit. The offset mounting for the Carbs. were for the low hood clearance on stock body installations. They may have seen some "ram" effect somewhat like Chryslers Ram Induction systems, but I doubt it.
-
Great build, you can almost hear the rumble of the exhaust from here.
-
Very interesting build. Don't remember ever seeing one of these built before. The color happens to be one of my favorites , and the wheels give it an aggressive look. I know little about the 1:1 car, but the rear looks very much like a Mustang.
-
Nice clean looking build. Sometimes its nice to leave the drivers window down so that the interior is easier to see.
-
All of your hard work seems to have paid off with a great looking build. You're not alone on the pricing issues, I have to agree. David. I think what looks like a second radio is the controls for the heater and air conditioner. That was the way Pontiac did it at that time.
-
Beautiful rebuild. I like what you did on the interior seats.
